Knowledge Of Incidents, Then And Now

Sat Jun 23, 2007 3:52 pm

Hey guys,

Whilst on a flight today, something made me remember back to a flight I took when in my late teens.

I was on a UA 744 departing AKL (after transitting on a LAX-AKL-MEL flight), and I saw some smoke coming out an engine during start-up. Of course I knew no better and thought it bad, so I told the F/A sitting opposite me (I was in the exit row). His response was a very casual "happens every start-up".

Now, the thing is, as a flight attendant today, this situation really still sticks out to me. That F/A did not even so much as glance outside the window, nor barely stop his conversation with his colleague. I also know now that smoke does indeed happen a lot on start-up; but as an F/A, if someone reported 'smoke', I would always at least look.

Just curious if anyone else on here (crew or otherwise) has experienced an oboard occurence as a 'lay-person', only to look back on with a better knowledge of flying and think to themselves "hang on, that wasn't right...."
