Amazing plane.
I remember yelling out from joy when Boeing dumped the "flying fish" looks.
This time, I yelled again from happiness to see such beauty being finally assembled in one piece, creating a massive eye-candy for any true aviation enthusiast.
Kudos to the thread-starter. I wish I was there myself.

Quoting Revelation (Reply 64):
One observation is it seems to have a bit more 'forehead' than older designs, not as bad as A380, but it seems to be a trend.

It's called "aerodynamics".

Quoting JeffB (Reply 88):

Can someone confirm... 787-3 or 787-8?

ANA is getting -8 first. -3 doesn't come out until 2010 or so.

G-G-G-G-G-HHHHOOOOSSSSSTTTT! Oh wait, it's the 787!

(And for those who are confused, there was a thread a little while back which stated the 787 is a Ghost plane and does not actually exist)

Wow! This aircraft looks amazing! Nice shots and thanks!

FYI

The 787-8 is 27 and 6 feet longer than the 200ER and 300ER repectively (186 ft vs 159 ft, 180 ft). 787 is also 40inch wider on the inside than 767 family. I think the large engine diameters account for the optical illusion that the plane is short and stubby like the A380. After seeing the A380 up close last weekend, I was amazed by how big the wing is. If there was ever a plane in need of a stretch but thats another topic.......

These milestones are getting further and further apart due to all the advances already out there. This is not about A vs B, this is about witnessing a major shift in technology that we rarely get to see.

Thanks again to the thread starter for some fantastic shots, well done!

It's nice to finally see the complete aircraft. It does not have the triangular windows or the "shark fin" tail like the early renderings but the designers have done a good job in creating a distinctive look to the aircraft. The nose section in particular looks very cool. I would like to eventually see some pictures of the 787 parked next to a 767 or 777 so that I can get a better idea of it's proportions.

I too would like to see how the 787 compares in size to the 767 and 777.

As I said from a technology standpoint amazing aircraft from its looks nothing spectacular. Most of us aviation enthusiasts (at least I did) became interested in civil aviation by the looks of all the different airliners. I remember as a kid seeing 727s, Dc9s, Bac1-11s, 737-200s, Dc10s, L1011s, A300/A310s, 757/767s, 747s etc....all different looking aircraft, twins, tri-jets, quads, t-tails, wing mounted engines, rear mounted engines a great variety of different looking aircraft. Now jets in the 737, A320 and the 787/A350 category will look absolutely alike which makes it less existing.
I give my cudos for Boeing for building the first composite airliner but from it looks it is not as stunning as the A380.

Absolutely amazing pictures!!! Like everyone else, I have been sitting by the computer in eager anticipation of seeing these pictures for the first time. I was also interested by your comment about a run-in with the police. I'd be interested to hear how that went. These days, authorities think that a person near an airplane with a camera is probing.

I too agree that it looks a little stubby. Then again, I think the same about the 767-200. The fuselage and the body proportion didn't seem to fit until the 767-300 or -400 came along. (Wide body/Short fuselage). I think the -800 and-900 will be great looking. I will also hold out until I see the painted version. It's too bad the "sharks-fin" tail couldn't be incorporated in the end design. That would have looked amazing!

Thanks so much for taking the time to get these pictures and for sharing them with us. I am very grateful!

Fly Safe!

Is it??? Major milestone with capital "M" was Concorde or 747. For me this is just another run-of-the-mill widebody. Of course with more composites than the ones in currently in mass production.

Quoting DeltaDC9 (Reply 104):

That's a very good question. Not a lot if anything imho. The glamour and everything else what made traveling by plane so special in "good ol' days" is gone for good, just as any creative ability of aircraft designers, the whole variety of aircraft manufacturers reduced to duopoly of Boeing and Airbus and few other small players like Embraer or Bombardier.

So far the 110+ plus posts contained only positive or neutral comments. Nowhere near the amount of crap "oh, it won't fly anyway) the A380 got from Boeing cheerleaders when the first pictures were published

Amazing! What a beautiful aircraft. We've been waiting a long time for this thread. I can't believe she's actually here! And for the people who say it looks like a 767......WHAT!!?? are you kidding me!?? It looks nothing like a 767. It's a far btter looking aircraft. and just imagine those wings in flight. Now, the next wait....the 350XWB and that will be an exciting day too for us all. Thanks SEAchaz for the pics!!

Absolutely beautiful!!!!

Take a careful look at two very interesting things IMHO:

The shape of the fairing between the wings and the fuselage...notice how the shape of the root connection is not strictly a laminar shape but it sort of undulates, giving it more of an impression of a 'wave' shape. I assume there is some sort of aerodynamic message here.

Also, look how tight the engine pylons are faired to the leading edge of the wings. Don't flame me here, but its almost as tight a fit as the old JT8's were faired as integrated structures into the old world 737's.

OK you engineeers out there...any comments, clarifications, thoughts?

Yes it is. Just like going from cloth the aluminum, going from aluminum to cfrp as the primary structure is as major as major gets. Add other changes like bleedles engines, all electric everything, and the distributes work share and you really cant get much more major than that except for a sonic cruiser, a practical supersonic airliner, or a BWB.

As for the percentage of composites, please just give up on that straw man, its not about the percentage, its how cfrp is used as the primary load bearing structure in a large airliner. A first in civil aviation.

Great stuff! Thanks for staying up late to take and post the photos. Definitely a looker this bird is, and there are several new design features that I like.

-Big ass engines relative to the fuse
-Chevrons
-Engines located in close proximity to the wings
-Good looking nose
-Tail is slightly curved (although not what it was earlier)
-The wings seem to located higher up in the fuse than with other planes, so the wing/body fairing appears to add only minimal surface area

Very nice aircraft indeed!!! It really is beautiful. And while I do lament the decrease in variety of aerodynamic forms, it does make spotting a more subtle art  Smile. So what are the distinctives of the 787? As I see it, the downward slope on the top edge of the vertical stab seems unique, and the nose does not have the traditional two-curve design meant to allow for the cockpit windows. It is just one smooth curve. The wing fairing seems concave at the top, which looks unusual -- haven't seen it on any other aircraft. And of course the chevrons. Truly distinctive. It will be very easy to spot, though the large scale features are the same as the other twins. Very nice!!!

Great photos. Like some folks have observed, those are some huge fans, not a lot of ground clearance either.

It's the real deal, folks. It came from all over but it was born in the USA. This IS the largest civilian CFRP aircraft ever made. Talk about betting the farm.

When I worked for Douglas I'd preflight the no. 2 engine on the MD11 because nobody else liked going up in the cherry pickers. I'd walk down that tunnel to the fan, sometimes I'd just sit with my feet dangling out and have a look around at the world, look for loose fasteners and the like, but those engines weren't nearly as large in diameter.

No doubt. I'm headed for Renton for the first flight.

Thanks for your comments, Dougloid. It does put this all in to prespective.

BTW I think you meant to say you will be in Everett for the first flight...

SEAchaz, thank you for making this morning so sweet! I have the desk model in my office, a couple 787 pics on the wall, and now these great shots to drool over.

She just plain looks elegant, yet powerful at the same time. Obviously I would have loved to see the shark tail make it to the final design, but the tail still has an unmistakeable shape.

The nose is "short, but to the point." And the engines look just plain monsterous!

I think I'm in love, I can't wait to see her dressed to impress with the livery!

Hi fellow a'netters!!

Great photos! The plane looks great.

As some of you might remember, I am the guy that posted the "famous" ghostplane tread.. It might not come as a surprise to you, but I never thought I would see this.. The project has come a long way, I have eaten the sour grapes, I am eating sour grapes every day now as I see the project go along..

My theory doesn't seem to materialize, but, there is still a long way to go before the plane actually flies..

If this plane holds its promises it will be a success for Boeing. I like what I have seen so far, but it is still a long way to go.. Smile

Wed Jun 27, 2007 1:18 am

Wanted to weigh in here amongst the wave of responses.

It's incredible to see this aircraft all put together. I've been following the program for years and the exact location and status of each and every part of it since April. It's an amazing feeling to see it all together in final form. Even though I'm on the other side of the country I do feel a small connection to this plane. I've lived and breathed it (as much as one can from covering it) several thousand miles away. I can only imagine the pride that those who actually built the 787 feel.

I've posted all the photos on my blog with permission from SEAchaz who said that without the tip from my blog, he never would've gone out there. I'm glad I was able to help make this moment possible in my own little way. The pictures now have a permanent home that you can link to and post elsewhere.

Quoting Iwok (Reply 125):
-The wings seem to located higher up in the fuse than with other planes, so the wing/body fairing appears to add only minimal surface area

That was my first observation too, the wings are quite high up on the fuselage, and the belly fairing seems a lot bigger than previous airplanes.

My second observation is that there seem to be 6, instead of 4, inboard slat track slots. Any idea why?

Overall, it looks beautiful, but I would have liked it more if the top of the fin was parallel to the fuse, rather than the current angle.

Can't wait to see it fly.
I'd rather die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather, not terrified and screaming, like his passengers

Wow, those are amazing pictures!

What I find very interesting is the shape of the engine covers, they are like dented on the back.

Thanks for the pictures!

Keep them coming!
