DL Upgrades MSY (more ATL; LGA Goes Mainline)

Sun Jul 08, 2007 12:58 pm

Good news for all MSY and DL fans out there....

I was browsing through the new September schedules, and it looks like DL is bumping up MSY capacity is a fairly big way.

MSY-ATL gets a 9th daily roundtrip, up from the current 8. Two flights will be flown with 757's, and the rest MD88's. The DL 757's haven't been seen in MSY in several months so that'll be a very nice sight.

MSY-LGA gets upgraded from a DL Connection E70 to a mainline MD88!

Hell of a job, Delta!

That's great news for MSY. Maybe the 767 will make it's way back down sometime in the future. Is DL the only nonstop option on the MSY-LGA route, or is AA still running it with MD80 equipment?

Not to hijack the thread, but I checked the Sept. Schedules for GPT, and ATL-GPT gets major upgrades too.
Goes to 8x on certain days with 2x MD88, 5x CR7, and 1x CR2.

Now at 7-9 a day with 1x MD88 (E170 on weekends) and the rest a mix of ERJ and CRJ.

Now if ORF can get those mid-day CRJ flights back to -88s. They're always packed and I hate the CRJs.

DL will be the only airline running it come September. AA will be cancelling its flight then.

Hey, good news for GPT! I've always sort of thought that the success of all the Gulf Coast airports is a good thing for the region as a whole.

MSY-SLC is currently a CRJ-7, any chance this one will be upgraded to a 738 or MD-90? The schedule shows it being CRJ-7 thorough the end of this year.

YES!!!
...been waiting for that for a lonnnng time. Amazingly sad how we're down to just one carrier, but a great one nonetheless, on LGA-MSY though  cry

Would love to see that, but it's doubtful--- DL's removed all of their 767 eqp from here. A far cry from the 5-6 daily 767s we used to see to ATL/LAS.  Sad

Would love to see it, but I have the sneaking suspicion that they'll upgauge LAX-MSY before SLC-MSY... just a hunch, could be wrong.

Interesting that DL apparently is seeing more demand causing an upgrade but AA is cancelling. Is AA getting weak in LGA or is this isolated?

The case can easily be made that DL and CO are pulling further ahead of AA in the NYC market as a whole... but this particular route drop was also due in part to a rather large rearrangement of AA's LGA slots/routings (plus the MSP incursion) initiated at the same time.

And an even further cry from the days when you got 5-6 daily L-1011s  Wink .

Back in the 80's DL; actually ran a 767 LGA-MSY-IAH. And even further back in the early 70's DL's ATL-MSY equipment included DC-10's.

And back in '76, National did the following daily DC-10 frequencies out of MSY:

IAH x2
LAS x1
LAX x2 + 1 on Fr
MIA x1
SFO exThSa
TPA x3!

Great news for MSY...every increase helps y'all down there.

Well, while we're at it... where's DL flown to (nonstop!) from MSY?

My list:
Domestically:
ATL, LGA, JFK, CVG, ORD, LIT, RDU, MCO, SJU, TPA, PNS, MOB, DFW, SLC, LAS, LAX

Internationally:
HAV

Intercontinentally:
CCS

Anyone with anything verifiable to add?

Good call, they also had DCA-MSY right after the storm, but dropped it.

Did DL actually fly LIT-MSY?

I know it was announced to start, but IIRC it was supposed to start in September 2005 and never did because of Katrina.

DL never started MSY-LIT...was going to start in Sep.'05 I believe.

They also flew MSY-MEM for years....and JAX-MSY-DFW 757 service as late as 1991.

These aren't the only upgrades for MSY come this Fall.

CO will be running 2x 753's on MSY-IAH starting 10/1...the most since Katrina.

AA 777: any word on if MSY-LGA will be coming back as mainline?

Until next year when DL takes delivery of some additional 738s as well as their much anticipated 772LRs, the shortage of mainline aircraft will be the larger culprit on this one I'm afraid.

Actually, DL still keeps 7 or 8 cans and two widebody loaders at MSY. They still fly in 763's from time to time for convention/festival upgrades and the like. Would be nice to see those back on a daily basis but i'm afraid those days are long since gone.

AA was not making enough money on the MSY-LGA and as I understand needed the equipment to make up the MSP services. AA says they will be back in the market later in the year ... we'll see.
Maybe they should just do a MSY-SFO and be done with the LGA market.

Aside from the demand being unanswered with a nonstop... why would AA of all carriers do that? They have no real power in SFO, and would have to rely almost completely on O&D from both ends.

Looks like SkyTeam is running MSY with Delta, Continental, and Northwest. Now all Moissant needs is AirFrance or KLM to start up a Daily A330 and life would be great  Smile (Or CO/DL 767 to Europe, but thats very unlikely)

NW is but a shell of its pre-K service here. DL's cut domestic capacity nationwide. CO's been our absolute champion.

DL downgrades MSY->LGA .... They won't be operating that MD88 long .. on the 17Nov it goes to an E70 and on the 15Dec (two days before AA returns with S80) it goes to CR7.

So the upgrade doesn't last long.

Makes you wonder if AA and DL are not 'talking' to one another.. ha!

The schedules from mid-November on are "dummy" or "default" schedules. I wouldn't put any stock into November schedules until early/mid September.
