Wow, a T7 and do not forget that ORD has storm last night that caused delayed and diversited so probably a lot of people were stuck at MCO. To bring many passangers as possible is to bring in a big aircraft that can bring more people on airplane rather than has passengers stuck there long as possible due to full flights or etc. It is good planning to do this. I think more of airlines are start to be more wise after experienced the terrible snow storm that we had in Feb and March that many passengers were stuck all over places.

I think it might have been an a/c swap, in which UA only had a 777 to use.

UA ran a few widebodies into MCO last year for the same reason. It is not the skd aircraft, but an upgauge likely to carry the overflow from last nights ORD debacle.

That would have been a nice flight to be on - expecting a TED A320 only to get a 777. Nice.

I was at ORD for lunch today and did a double take. An AA738, a rarity at ORD (its been a least two years since I've seen one there) in Astorjet colors no less! Another possible storm-related sub?

Impossible. UA doesn't have many Triple 7's lying around MCO...also the nearest airport that would, would be IAD or ORD, 1500 miles away.

Actually we had an AA 738 arrive at MCO from ORD today. I didn't see if it was the Astrojet one though, it had winglets - does the Astrojet have winglets now?

No but they have some possibly lying around ORD as the plane came in from ORD around 1:20 pm, but actually landed on one of the 17s at MCO and not the 18s.

Yeap, it was the Astrojet, which does have winglets. It departed ORD right about the time I was finishing up my onion rings!

I checked this out and it appears the previous TED flight ORD to MCO was Cancelled. The 777 was slam full from First, Business and Coach...not a seat on the plane was open.

any idea where this 777 came from?

UAL doesnt have spares, unless they are hinding them somewhere, something had to get cancelled or downgraded to pull the airframe... guessing it was an outbound ORD flight that cancelled since the trip7 came from ORD...

UA and all airlines have aircraft of each type that are on their way in or on their way out of scheduled maintenance service. They are "planned reserve" aircraft. They aren't necessarily available for revenue use, but if they can be worked in to a leg or two and a crew is available, then they can be used. If they're in the middle of a "D" check, it won't happen. If they've been serviced and are waiting to be worked back in the schedule, it could happen. Also, some rotations have longer ground times. Looks like this 777 was available so they, smartly, used it.

Came from UA959/09Jul LHR-ORD

Went to UA928/10Jul ORD-LHR

We turn the aircraft differently in ORD and can have 2 777's all day everyday. F959 arrives @ 1821 and departs 24:01hrs later as [email protected] 1822. The other is F884 from NRT arriving @ 1137 and leaves 24:21hrs as F883 @ 1249. If they use the LHR Arrival, F929 @ 1031 for the NRT flight, they have a spare everyday. That being said, on at least 1 of the 24hr overnights, heavy maintenance is performed, sometimes both overnighters. other time, not much work is required, so it can be used as a spare.

Hope this helps.

That could have become a problem if they ran into crew rest issues.

Yeah, I thought about that too. Wonder if they had a relief crew fly with them just in case.

as mentioned above, there is some flex in the 777 turns at ORD...and during a period of Irrops, such as ORD has experienced the past several days, it would very advantageous to put the available resources to work while the kinks are worked out of the schedule...this sub would allow the BUS fleet and crews to be repositioned back to where they belong .
