Virgin 747-400 Cockpit Video.

Thu Jul 12, 2007 4:20 am

This is only DVD I have ever bought from the flight deck as I find them all very similar, but I think this is one of the better one's. Capt Alan Carter of Virgin lands at SFO from LHR after a 10 hour flight, and doesn't look a bit tired!!!

What a brilliant video. It looks as if its from a while ago but still very cool.
I say it looks a while ago because the Captain looks very 1990's

There's actually quite a few other parts to that video including the takeoff from Heathrow. Actually LHR takeoff vid was posted on this site a while back (I think it was back in the winter). There was a thread about it that mentioned the FO in the video went on to fly with Korean Air and I think the captain eventually retired a while after this video was taken.

Link here reckons it was Carter who went to Korean Air, and now back in the U.K flying for Thomsonfly on the 737.

I mean, VS 744 Skipper to flying pissheads to Malaga?? What's wrong with man??!!!

Going from Virgin to Thomsonfly sounds like a bit of a demotion to me! confused
Does anyone know where the FO is? Is he still with VS?

This is a great video! I bought it about a year ago and watch it from time-to-time. It is very detailed and educational.

Maybe the grass wasn't really greener on the other side of the fence. When he decided to head back home Thomsonfly was the only gig available.

Cool videos nonetheless - Thanks for posting 'em.

Think he is a VS A340 captain these days, from memory he was en ex red arrows chap. If its the chap I am thinking of, I have had a beverage or two with him in Wan Chai.

Whilst the majority of pilots might see the promotion from short-haul to long-haul, or from narrow body to wide body, as a step up the ladder, some pilots might soon get fed up of the endless nights away from home (on average 3 days), constantly going through time changes (e.g. arriving at a hotel in Tokyo at midnight when your body thinks it's 8am) and other downsides to the job.

Besides, if they are in their 50s, mortgage paid off, kids left home, handsome savings and pension, why the need to stay at the top of the ladder if this involved too much time away from home? Far better to take a small pay cut, fly a smaller aircraft on short haul flights and be back with 'er indoors most nights. That way, they can continue to enjoy flying and home life. They might even have a second job or own a small business.

There are usually plenty of pissheads in Y on most VS flights (the Chav's Favourite Airline), so there would not be much difference in flying them to Malaga for an former VS 744 skipper!!

I believe this was taped in 2000. Apparently, I read somewhere that the extra crew member behind Carter passed away.  Sad And I believe Carter moved because he wanted to fly more, and being on a 744 wasn't providing that.

The job opportunities at Thomsonfly are superior to Virgin IMO; they are larger than VS.

True. In a previous post I didn't understand why he'd wanna go from a "top of the hill" VS and KE 747 captain down to captaining 737's for a vacation airline. But I'm sure he gets to go to some nice places since its a vacation airline and he doesn't have to be away from home for days at a time. And you don't have to fight long hours of boredom on longhaul flights. Although I'm sure he got paid better w/ Virgin and Korean. Glad to hear the FO is a VS A340 captain as he seemed very professional. Both Carter and the FO (does anyone know his name?) seemed very professional and I'd feel very comfortable having either of them fly me as a passenger in any situation.

Both Carter and the FO (does anyone know his name?)

Obviously Captain Alan Carter, First Officer Allan Rattigan and the chap behind (don't know if he's dead though!) First Officer John Cullom.

Having dug a bit deeper at pprune, looks like Cullom had a car accident and couldn't fly and tried to sue the airline.....

As a relative of a former KE 747 captain, I am not surprised to see the move from VS to a smaller firm. Being away from home 20+ days a month does get old....

So John Collum was the intl. relief officer. I forgot about the over 8 hour rest rule when I watched the video. I'm sorry to hear he was in a wreck and subsequently treat poorly by VS.

According to the article he was offered a job in the Virgin Beauty Salon at LHR, that has to be the ultimate smack in the teeth.........

Thouroghly enjoyable clips . I enjoyed watching the take-off particularly as I always find it the best part of any flight.
Really clear sound and picture made me feel like I was there.

Thanks

Has to be old because not too many 744 operators use flap 30 anymore.

I know Alan as he sometimes works for our company on his days off, instructing members of the public on fun flights in the Virgin 747-400 simulator at Gatwick. He's a really nice guy. So he's still connected with Virgin 747-400s in some way!

I'd heard that Alan Rattigan, the relief pilot on that Virgin DVD, drowned in South Africa about six months ago. Very sad.

If he was in a car crash, just how is that the airlines fault, especially if he lost his medical because of it ?. Medicals are nothing to do with the airline, the CAA set the rules.

The airline provides the flight crew with medical insurance, and loss of license insurance neither of which they are required to do so I'm sure he didn't do too badly out of it.

There have actually been a few threads in tech/ops about 747 flap settings, you may be able to find the answer by using the search function, which is what I did. According to philsquares, a user whose knowledge I trust as he's a SQ 744 captain, a flaps setting of 25 or 30 is generally used, depending on the airline and if noise abatement procedures must be met. Flaps 10 or 20 is used for takeoff, depending on the airline.
