Older Than 30 Years 747s Still Operating

Sat Jul 14, 2007 5:18 am

Hi,
I was wondering which airlines are still operating 747s that are older than 30 years old...

Thanks.

Possibly Saudia and Iran Air, there's a lot of Cargo A/C older than that flying around.

UPS still has some ex-AA 747-123Fs operating. Dates from the mid-1970s. One ship, N975UP, was the star of the motion picture, Airport 1975. Still in service after 30+ years.  Wink

One of Iran Air's two operating 747SPs (EP-IAB) is 31 years old. It was returned to service a few months ago after being parked for about 2 years. The other one (EP-IAD) is 29 years old.

After 30+ years, wouldn't every piece of the aircraft have been replaced one time or multiple times? How many time? Is there any part of that came with the plane since day 1?

Depending on the operator, it may be different:
If it flown in middle east with desert-like conditions, things may not need to be replaced as often (they store aircraft in the desert ofr more than the reason that its cheap) and if it is a conversion, lots of other things will have changed than on a passenger config or original freight.

No. Their 742s were late-built examples and are about 20 years old. They had one ex-KLM freighter though until last year which was from the mid 70s.

Evergreen and Kalitta have the largest 30+ 747 fleets nowadays. Evergreens N479EV and N480EV are from 1970. The Iranian AF still has at least one 741 active (flying in Saha livery without titlles) which was built in 1970 (reg. 5-8103).
Northwest has 3 freighters which were built in 1975/76 and have been flying the red tail continously.
The oldest passenger 747s flying must be the irregularly flying Kabo Air aircraft (2 or 3), which date back from the early 70s.
The USAFs four E4B-commandposts were built in 1972/73 and certainly will fly for years still (I wouldn´t wonder if they´re still active by 2020)

Perhaps, but a few years ago one of Kalitta's 747's dropped an engine over Michigan on the climb out from ORD. This of course may have had nothing to do with age, but....

747-121 (msn 19661/70) originally delivered to PA as N771PA is the oldest still in service. It first flew on 24 July 1970 so will be 37 years old in just over a week.

However, on reflection 37 is not that old is it? I mean it's barely middle aged. At least I hope so. Ah! But this is an aircraft that spends a lot of time with a pressurised cabin at 35,000 feet. So perhaps it is old. But it is not as old as the RAF VC-10 C1K that is registered XR808 (msn 828). It was 41 years old last March and I believe it is still in service.

Out of interest, what is the highest time 747 either existing now, or scrapped? I ask as B-HVY will be scrapped next year and it is approaching 130,000 hours. How does this compare with other 747s?

Bump as I'm very interested to know if there is a link to this. I'm also interested in peak 747 cycles.  Smile

Great old planes.  Smile Very cutting edge circa 1970. (Ok, bleading edge of technology circa 1970.)

Yes, UPS has 6 747-100's that are all over 35 years old. Three of them are -121's, 3 -123's; the -121's were first delivered to Pan Am (somebody asked what happened to their 741's, UPS is operating 3 of them) and the -123's were first delivered to American Airlines. 2 of them were delivered in 1970, 3 in 1971. They also have -200's of which most came from Singapore; these were delivered in the early 1980's. The main hub of UPS is at my home airport (SDF) and I go out there all the time just to watch the 3 late afternoon 747 departures (ONT,ANC,DFW) and they sure don't look that old and fly great. They do climb pretty sluggishly and use a lot of runway when loaded with cargo and fuel, but that's normal for a 747 classic. And those JT9D's are simply music to my ears on takeoff, if loud! bigthumbsup

Unfortunately, w/ the 744 entering the fleet this year and next year, they'll likely be retired at the end of next year. cry

That is the highest number I´ve seen so far for a 747 (and rivals the DC-10, some of which which must have the highest flight-hour record).
B-HVY was built in 1980, so probably the first quartet of 742Fs for Northwest (built 1975/76), of which 3 are still active, will be similar, as they have been operated without any period of storage. Standard passenger 747s are usually retired when they pass 100.000 hours.

Apparently at 130,000hrs there is a major Boeing check which has to be done which is very expensive. This is part of the reason why B-HVY is being retired. The original plan was for the check to be done, so it obviously is not prohibitively expensive, just that an airline must do some serious consideration before they commit to it. I was wondering whether any other 747s had been subjected to this check.

As said, the hours/cycles are only mentioned for certain aircraft. You can find them under "Fate/remarks". Many TWA BA, LH or Northwest-aircraft have the flight hours written there, for instance:
c/n 19670, l/n 20, retired 1996 with 101.537 hours ex TWA
c/n 19671, l/n 21, retired 1994 with 95.004 hours ex TWA
c/n 19673, l/n 35, retired 1997 with 102.704 hours ex TWA
or
c/n 19761, l/n 23, retired 1998, 102.150 hours ex BA
c/n 19762, l/n 41, retired 1998, 102.569 hours ex BA
or
c/n 19778, l/n 27, retired 2000, 95.260 hours ex NWA
c/n 21643, l/n 352, retired 2001, 103541 hours ex LH
and so on

You can see, that NWA for instance retired and scrapped half a dozen 741s in the early 90s which only had just passed 70.000 hours.
