There is a very good article in August's issue of Airliner World, which is now on sell, on airline alliances and this confirms the ranking in terms of size etc. However, oneworld might be the smallest but its members are the most consistently profitable of all three alliances.

checkmark  Look at Star and there are a lot of carriers in there that have had or having significant financial problems - SA)">UA, OS, SK, US, SA, etc. in oneworld, more of the key members have tended to be in better financial shape.

Actually that's one of the better articles in a magazine that has been going rapidly downhill in its quality of late. But thats for another thread....

Wonder when one of the Alliances will land a major Middle East and mainland China carrier?

It is such a hassle flying in China with no alliance flights that work on round-the-world or circle Asia or Pacific tickets. Even Dragon Air doesn't count as OneWorld. Would think one would partner with Etihad or Qatar in Middle East and China Southern in China.

Air China

Thought Air China was a member of Star Alliance! I don't know much about their operations though and not sure if they can be used for mainland China travel.

The only airlines that I would like to see join Oneworld are EK or EY. Their route network would be a good addition but they both have quality products that would fit well into the Oneworld alliance.

The ranking I gave before was only based on the numbers. Personally I like Skyteam because they have 3 American carriers. The other two alliances don't matter to me that much, but I would probably pick Oneworld over Star Alliance.

I was going off of the Wikipedia list which evidently isn't correct.

Both Air China and Shanghai Airlines have been invited to join Star. New alliance members have to meet quite a few requirements before they officially join, e.g. changing IT systems to be compatible with those used by other members to facilitate information interchange for reservations systems, frequent flyer programs, etc.

China Southern is scheduled to join SkyTeam by the end of 2007.

That just leaves oneworld without a member in mainland China, but with Air China and China Southern already spoken for, China Eastern would be the obvious candidate but their route network is less extensive and they are the weakest of the Big 3 financially.
