ORD Diversions 7/18

A large line of storms has developed near ORD and I've already found this diversion to MKE... UA 828 (744) from Hong Kong. Anyone else have further diversion details?

UA 687 LGA-ORD diverted to GRR. Current filed plan with FAA shows wheels-up at GRR at 2025, giving the flight an approximately 2-hour arrival delay to ORD, assuming it doesn't get pushed back further.

Its a mess all the way from Iowa, stretching through Ilinois and over to Indiana and Michigan. Here at CID we had tornado warnings left and right. A messy night for sure

Looks like FWA got their UA5819 Flt. diverted back. Also MQ has one from ORF.

Wish I could get Chicago approach, ORD tower and ground streaming! MDW stream is down according to liveatc.net.

I've lived here in Evanston for three years now and this is the most impressive lights display I've seen since I've been here!

I was just outside and watched a Martinair MD-11 and a JAL 742 come in right over my house! I don't see that every day. That will probably be it for the night as it appears the storms are slowly moving southward further away from ORD.

If what I have been going through for the last 3 to 4 hours is just the warm up, then I hate to see what is coming for us later tonight! Driving home, in the Schaumburg/Rolling Meadows area (I90/Rt53) at about 6:00 it was raining so hard that I could not see anything, but less than a minute later, it was not raining at all. And for the past hour or so it has been raining so hard where I live, the cell is right above my house, insane lightning that lights up my house and the thunder shakes the house for what seems to be foreve.r

ORD is again allowing landings. UAL 9974 just received clearance for 27R.

its my understanding the ramp just reopened...it was closed since about 8:50pm...

sitting here waiting for UA*6703 to MEM, now showing 10:32 from 8:50pm, we are on our third gate and probably the third aircraft as well...not looking good...nice light show to watch at least Smile

just move us to 11:50pm, they seem determined to fly the flight, there is also a RDU flight from this gate, listed at 11pm now...i do concur the radar does not look positive...

the first few planes just rolled into the F/G alley, but i've seem a few heavies moving by and now a few RJs...so at least things are moving. UX is basically all on hold until 11pm departures...eagle just got planes to gates, so it looks like there will be a rush in about 30-40mins, as they turn the arrivals...

I remeber a solid line of storms blocking west bound departures from LGA... it became a waiting game.... sat at LGA for 5 hours till a whole developed... one of the most beautiful flights of my life! clouds all around lighting up....

Wow...if that's somehow true... a 737-700 landed and took off on a 4400 x 75 ft runway!

It could be some sort of error in FlightAware. Isn't OXI Knox? As in Knox VOR?

Yeah the Knox VOR is OXI, Starke County airport is KOXI. Definitely a flightaware error, and I've seen similar errors before in that area. My guess is that when TRS32 got re-filed via OXI, flightaware interpreted it as KOXI.

Even if a 73G got to some kind of super-fuel critical state that needed a GA field to land at, and it was already at OXI, VPZ is a hop skip and a jump away with its 7000x150 and ILS. Although I do remember a year or two ago when WN had a fuel critical plane divert to off-network LAF instead of making it to IND. It caused a big stir for the Boiler aviation folk, I got a few pics of it thanks to the girlfriend.

Yeah, it was really nice that those didn't show. I was given 15 minute warning on YYC and when it didn't show in 20 I found out it headed to Chicago instead.

I just arrived back home from Seattle a couple hours ago, and we weren't diverted. Maybe another anetter could answer this----Why are some flights diverted and others are allowed in?

By the way, awesome lightning show on the way in, not awesome delays sitting on the tarmac for 45 plus minutes.

The weather was truly weird tonight. The main weather was out around DBQ, but a line formed out ahead of it oriented WNW-ESE and it impacted ORD and DPA first. ORD went into a groundstop, which was extended an hour at a time for 3-4 hours. The line stayed just north of MDW, and MDW was running approaches to 31C the entire time, as well as departures. Eventually the line started creeping towards MDW.

I had two flights in there at that time that I had gassed out the wazoo... Once the line was about to hit MDW, I had 941 head north via DBQ to get on the north side of the line, hold there (with a MKE alternate), and then approach MDW from the NW side once the weather cleared. He got held at DBQ, and then near RFD, and was the 1st arrival cleared in. SWA1138 was coming up from BNA, and he was going to head west via STL CID DBQ, but ZKC had him hold over UIN since ZAU was full of traffic and wouldn't take any more from adjacent ARTCCs until flights came out of holding and started for the airport. Once 941 headed in, they let 1138 out of holding at UIN and cleared him direct RFD direct MDW, although the flightaware.com track doesn't quite show it.

A fun night, with 941 in the air for 2:00, and 1138 in the air for about 1:24. Exxon was very happy with me..

It depends upon when the weather -actually- hits (versus what time it's -forecasted- to) and how much fuel is onboard for potential deviations, holding, and possible diversion to an alternate airport. Forecast accuracy is often an issue, and today's afternoon 1818Z forecast (that a more-distant flight would have been based upon) wasn't calling for thunderstorms until 06Z or so. When the new 0024Z forecast was issued, the weather was on Chicago's door, with storms forecast between 00Z-03Z. Longer-haul flights were already in the air, but flights from closer-in points were still on the ground, and could have fuel loads increased to reflect the latest ETA for the weather.

MKE really got the brunt of everything, for a while there Milwaukee was holding off planes because they couldn't handle all the diverts inbound.

MSN would take more, but there is a ramp expansion project going on that will add another 20% of area. The concrete should be poured sometime soon. They were taking soil samples today. That should take some of the brunt off of Milwaukee when the ramp here is complete. Currently all the edges of MSN's ramp are blocked except on the south end and because of the shape of the terminal, there is no remote parking in that area that is feasible.
