Today we honor the victims of Piedmont Airlines Flight 22, a Boeing 727-22, which crashed July 19, 1967 in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Shortly after taking off from the Asheville Regional Airport, it collided with a Cessna 310, killing all 79 aboard the 727 and the three aboard the Cessna.

I was born in 1979, so this one was 12 years before my time. However, having flown Piedmont 727s in and out of AVL numerous times as a kid, this one rings true to me.
It seems as though July is marked with sad notes in aviation history.
BTW, not to get the thread off track, but I noticed DeltaAVL's comment on his profile about using the stairs at AVL for the US 737. I lived in Arden from 1985-1990 and we had nothing but stairs! It was before the renovation that gave AVL jetways! Until the very late 80s, baggage claim didn't have a moving carousel. They simply threw your bags down down a chute. The place where A-1 and A-2 are now used to be a great observation area. I watched a lot of Piedmont 727s and 737s take off from that spot. I was also there when the Asheville resident who was on TWA 847 came home connecting on a Piedmont 727 from CLT..... Again...sorry to hijack the thread... but...ahh..the memories.

Thanks for sharing that. Man, I wish there was still an observation deck. There's still a fairly good viewing area if you go up the hill and look through the fence though.
Times have sure changed.

Forgot to add the bit about the controversial investigation that followed. A few years ago, an amateur aviation historian brought the case back to the NTSB looking for a different ruling.
It was so controversial because the lead NTSB investigator was the brother of the vice president of Piedmont.
