Air India Shows Off New Colours

Sat Jul 28, 2007 5:39 pm

At a function at the Technical area located in the Air Force Station of Delhi Airport (DEL/VIDP) dignitaries, including the Prime Minister showcased Air India's latest aircraft including the freshly arrived 777-237LR VT-ALA 'Andhra Pradesh'. During the course of the function VT-ALC 'Assam' also arrived escorted by two Su-30 aircraft from the Indian AF. It was announced that AI will coon be going in for a fresh order of both narrow and wide-body aircraft to supplement the aircraft already ordered which are going to be used primarily for route augmentation.
On August 1 AI begins non-stop BOM-JFK services using the 77L with Y-class tickets at Rs 52,000 and the second non-stop service will be started between DEL-JFK by end-January. The first 777-337ER arrives in September! And VT-ALB 'Arunachal Pradesh' will be delivered by end-August!
Here are some photographs I took, I will be asking my colleague to upload a few of his images to the site as well! Click through for larger sizes!

Any idea about the timeframe of the order and the size of the same??

14" monitors in Y and 23" in C must be some kind of record. SQ uses 23" in F AFAIK.  Smile

Thanks for the update from the field! Glad to hear that AI is looking at ordering additional wide bodies - AI definitely needs to get rid of it's current set of troublesome a/c to improve it's image and it's reliability. Good luck in their exercise to order more a/c - I just hope they don't go for 330s and 350s, IMO they should just order more of what they have decided on - 777s and 787s. Maybe 330s as a bridge (if they are available for early delivery)...
Incredible India!

No that was F class, If you see the rest of the album you'll see that the J class seats have 15" screens.

About the updated AI order - PP would not give details - but I heard the words 'XWB' out of his mouth - Hmmmm. Though Boeing and GE representatives were there.
Plus Thulasidas spoke about a VLA - which one, we don't know. But I think the next order could easily be a 10-15 aircraft order for the 748i or 388!

More later!

And thats a nice upgrade in their cabin, is this a new thing?...and will it be retrofitted in all the older planes?

When did AI start naming aircraft after north-eastern states?

They are naming the planes in alphabetical order of the states and nothing to do with location of the states.

As such, Andhra Pradesh is a South Indian state....alphabetical order is the only safe way to go in India....ANY other method of selecting state names would probably trigger off protests and strikes and could even lead to the fall of governments in India.... Big grin

Of course, the joke is quite simple, VT-ALD will be 'Bihar' leading one commentator at the event, who happened to be a Sinha (Ergo, he is Bihari) to comment, 'Who on earth is want to fly on 'Bihar'?
