That is good for people on West coast who want to travel on DL to europe. I am sure people of Utah are celebrate about this right now. How many international gates at SLC?? I think it will be one of first europe flight out of SLC and there will be more intl flights come to SLC. Hope that SLC will have room for intl growing.

Great news! Can't wait for the announcement. I, however, knew of this for a while so it's not really news. But it's good to see an announcement will be made soon.

The title of this thread needs to be changed, I was thinking where the HELL is SLT? Now I know it should be SLC.

I know. But I was thinking maybe it's some obscure place where service from CDG would be more reasonable than from ATL or JFK. It took me like 2 seconds to realize it was SLC, but still.

Yeay now I can go to Europe from OAK thru SLC. I'd rather go to SLC than ATL riding DL. I hope other Western cities will feed this new CDG service from SLC.

D2 and D4 are our international gates. I think it would come into D2. I've seen a 777 parked there before at an angle. I don't think D6 in an international gate and that also holds 767s.
So our SJD flight on skywest doesn't have to go to D4 and all the people don't have to go through customs. When all the other cities in mexico have to go to the international gates. Is there a customs facility at SJD? Just like canada? All our Canada flights can park wherever except YYJ which has to go to D4. I heard it was because there's no customs in YYJ. Anyone know the answer?
This is so exciting!!!! I wonder what time of day it'll come in? Cause the international gates are usually occupied at 4 for YYJ and again at 6 and 7 for 2 mexico flights. Maybe it'll come in at 130 or 2. That'll catch a pretty decent skywest bank.
Wow this is going to be so exciting!!! Wish it was a 777 though. Sometime in the future it will be!!!

I'm pretty sure SLC will be offering a decent sized chunk of money over the next several years as an incentive ... I'm not convinced it could cut it otherwise.

That said, look for me on the inaugural flight, hopefully in seat 2F.

Victoria (YYJ) lacks a pre-clearence facility unlike YVR and 10 other Canadian airports that enable U.S. bound flights to use domestic gates upon arrival at U.S. airports. The bad news on this one is that after September 30th, the flight goes into winter hibernation, with a resumption in late March.

Now that Open Skies is in effect and LHR is finally open, why not try and get a daily slot for SLC? Why would DL want to start a new flight to LGW if LHR is now an option?

Any service from SLC to London would go through Heathrow, and seeing that DL will be using it's LHR slots for flights to JFK and ATL, the SLC-LHR looks to be postponed for a while. While SLC-London has better O&D than SLC-CDG (and only slightly better), the connectivity offered from the two SkyTeam hubs allows for a much better flight operationally and economically. For instance, there could be 150 daily O&D passengers from SLC-CDG, but there could be 40 more to FRA, 15 to MXP, 12 to FCO, etc. Not to mention the O&D from places like PDX-CDG, which will now have another option. The flight will almost be guaranteed to receive subsidies from Salt Lake City, but I'd venture to say that the route could operate just fine without them. A 767-300ER is the perfect size, anything larger would ruin the route's chances of profitability. The route won't start until Spring/Summer of '08 though, when DL has the 13 ex-TW/AA 757ERs for JFK-Europe flights in operation so some 763s can be pulled off for other ventures (LAX-Asia which will be coming soon and more JFK/ATL to Africa and the Middle East service). These are exciting times at DL. Who ever thought SLC would see nonstop service to Europe?

Great News for SLC and DL! This flight has been a while in the making and it is good to hear it should really be announced. I did see that in the article it states it might not begin until next year, perhaps spring?

LHR is very high-yielding, but only from certain destinations. When DL starts LHR, it will be from JFK and ATL for sure, possibly even LAX down the road. CVG and SLC would be from LGW.

I wonder where the author of the article (who writes like a third grader) got his or her information....unnamed sources? Do realize that those unnamed sources could be (1) one of the threads here at a.net where the possibility of SLC-CDG was discussed or (2) a cleaning person at SLC. I do find it curious that the writer seems almost surprised that the transatlantic flight out of SLC, if launched, would likely operate to CDG (and not London)....clearly the writer does not know about DL's relationship with AF (never mind the proposed AF/DL deal on transatlantic operations) or SkyTeam and that the SLC-CDG flight would connect two hub cities. Before the people of SLC get too excited, I think that they should wait to hear something from DL itself; I find it surprising that none of our very knowledgeable ""DL team"" has mentioned anything about a coming announcement of SLC-CDG services, usually they have rather solid inside info.

That DL + AF are applying to jointly operate their transatlantic network (similar to the NW + KL deal) is only reason that there may be some credibility to this rumor: DL opening up a SLC-CDG flight suddenly became far less risky for DL with AF as a full partner on the flight. Time will tell....there is no doubt that DL could fill up a 763ER operating between SLC and CDG with some local traffic plus connecting traffic originating in West Coast cities, the question has always been the yields and whether there was demand for those all important J class seats on the flight.

I think they would not drop that route for this one instead, some of the JFK routes would get 752s and one of the 763s from JFK would be transfered to SLC, and be used to connect two very important Skyteam hubs!

If that were the case MSP would not being seeing daily service to Amsterdam, London, or Tokyo; Tampa would not be seeing service to London; Portland would not be seeing service to Frankfurt, or Tokyo.. There is a demand for service from the Salt Lake market the plethora of Delta Air Lines flights to and from the market only further enrich the possibility of service.

The route would do exceptionally well if it was timed to commence with the April 2008 kick off of travel to Europe, just in time for the summer rush. A daily 767-300 on the route, or even 4x weekly on the route could make the route more than viable. It has been a long time in the making as connecting two of the strongest Sky Team hubs has been rumored for years in the very least. There are 50 cities that would benefit from the addition of a SLC-CDG service, only 3 of which have existing service nonstop via Air France.

The announcement may be made on 13 August...

Something along the lines of

SLC-CDG 500pm-1035am+ 9h 35
CDG-SLC 1220pm-240pm 10h 20

The above is rumor at this point.. Until an announcement is made do not hold your breath!

Great news for SLC!!! Although I have to say, Im not sure how credible this author is because he has no nameable source. I sure hope it is true, I would love to see SLC have nonstop service to Europe. I imagine that the West Coast would much rather stop there than ATL (except for AF and TN nonstops of course).

Their is enough demand in the J cabin from the West Coast to support a sole 767-300 SLC-CDG, and hence the amount of Air France flights to the West Coast on a daily basis they continue to exude demand for the premium product with their services to SFO, LAX, and SEA.

Regarding KE/CO.. Delta is attached nearly at the hip to Korean Airlines, I dont think that Continental will be moving in on Delta Air Lines relationship with Korean Airlines anytime soon. AM, KE, AF, DL were all in Sky Team from the begining. Continental did not enter until 4 years later.

True, but SLC's European demand is smaller than PIT or STL, so while a hub helps, it's not necessarily a guarantee.

I am waiting to hear this from delta not the news. If/when it is verified it will be terrific news. Shows that Salt Lake City is remaining a prioirty for Delta, as it should be.

well possibly but everyone must realize that what will make SLC-CDG work is AF. Without the codeshare it probably wont work, a JV would be best. Also there are already tons of connections from the US to LGW/LHR....so SLC would have nothing to offer with LGW service.

Like for any new route, it will as stay for as long as demand/revenue is there! If not there, it will be dropped to the benefit of another tryout somewhere else. But IMO it has a great potential, the whole Europe (AF is a major player throughout Europe) to the whole Mountain/W coast US (where DL is also a major player), so I'd see it staying, at least seasonnally (summer).

Im thinking that the flight will not start for a while probably in 08 sometime. The runway will be longer by then? The flight will start out pretty much as most people thought i think in about a year, hopefuly after the runway is longer, and after delta has tried a few more unique cities in europe out of ATL and JFK. Unfortunitley i wouldnt be surprised if this 767 came out of CVG Sad

And 5pm seems like such a bad time to leave. Expecially during the summer. Hottest time of the day. It'll be way weight restricted until the city forks up money to extend the runway.

I can make a bit of a prediction on this one. I think it will do quite well in the summer, but it may struggle in the winter. But I think most A.netters would say the same.

An airline like US Airways will never be able to start a service from PHX even to LGW, not to mention other europe destinations.

If you push the inbound time up any more there will be zero room for a delay causing a stack of dominos to fall as far as scheduling is concerned. The outbound time of 1700 is based upon the 1600 arrival bank into SLC. There is another SkyWest bank at about 1630.. Which would allow for a 1.20 to 2 hour gap between arrival, customs, and transferring flights.
