Shared Civil / Military Runways

Sat Aug 04, 2007 12:28 pm

Sitting at OKA (Naha, Okinawa, Japan) yesterday waiting for my ANA 767-300, I watched Phantoms (!) and P-3s landing on the single runway in between the comings and goings of 737s, 747s, 767s, 777s, Dash-8s and a solitary A320.

Where else could you do that kind of thing? And where else will you see Phantoms sharing a runway with 777s?!

Until about 2005, FRA was a joint-use facility... I think CAE is as well?

Many places in the US.

ANC, CHS, PHL, PHX, BOI, HNL, on and on and on. . . . many, many in the US.

Qualify "joint use".

And even at some American airports that don't technically qualify as 'joint use,' you'll see military planes on a fairly regular basis. Often, it's because an ANG unit is based there. Other times, it's a result of one of the tenants at the airport. F-15s aren't an uncommon sight at STL since they are manufactured there (and I think the MO ANG flies them out of STL as well, but I'm not sure about that).

I know there is a military base at Boise, ID (BOI) and Austin, TX (AUS) for sure. I forgot about Tucson, AZ (TUS)

I suspect many small countries in the developing world have this: in Bangladesh, Dhaka (DAC), Chittagong (CGP) and Jessore (JSR) all have single runways and are shared by civil aviation and the military.

When we lived in the Ivory Coast, I think the Ivorian Air Force used Abidjan's airport for its Alphajets.

In the US, I have seen military jets at ABQ, BOI, CLT.

Amazing. Coming to think of it, I've seen C-17s at CHS.

But it seems uncommon outside the US. And go on - find me another place where you can watch Phantoms from the airport restaurant!  Wink

VPS (Eglin AFB) is a full USAF base (I believe mostly F-15s) and is also served by commercial airlines - DL and NW each have mainline in there (NW to MEM with the DC-9; DL to ATL with the MD-88), and DL, AA and CO all have regionals there as well (DL to MCO, CVG, ATL; CO to TPA and IAH; AA to DFW; ORD starts in a month). These are the only non-military operations allowed at VPS; general aviation cannot use VPS.

I can attest to this. I used to fly TW in and out of STL all the time and in 1996-1997, I'd see F-15s lined up at both the McDonnell plant and, across the runway, the ANG facility. This was when the F-15E production was still in high gear and so there were tons of them around.

If it's painted O.D. green, it's military, whether it's Regular, Guard or Reserve . . . ALL have seen combat. . . .

This is only recent as a few years ago, GRK (Grey Army Airfield) was opened up for civilian aircraft. The city of Killeen, Texas decided to ask the Army if they could move their civilian operations to the much bigger airfield and leave the municipal KIL as a general aviation airport. The Army agreed and a brand new terminal and new road infrastructure was built for the site. This was around the same time MQ decided to start using their E-145's on the route from DFW phasing out the Saabs. CO is there with service to IAH. Not sure if it's still occuring, but Allegiant started LAS service to GRK and recently DL/ASA started ATL service.

How about Colorado Springs Municipal airport that's shared with Peterson AFB? I flew XE out of there a week ago and it looked odd to see a United Express RJ taxiing with an F-16 taxiing right behind it.

Actually, there are quite a few airports like that in Japan.
As mentioned, Okinawa is the busiest of the military/civil airfields. This is the only airfield where civil, JASDF, JMSDF, & JGSDF have normal operations. Here are some other airfields with the busier ones first.

- Fukuoka - its mostly civil but JASDF has some ops and the USAF flies C-130s during the weekday as they have a small facility on the airfield.
- Sapporo Chitose - military and commercial are basically separate sections but it is nevertheless the biggest, in area, airport in Japan. JASDF has the VIP 744, & two squadrons of F-15s based there.
- Misawa - mostly military but there are a handful of commercial flights. USAF has a squadron of F-16s based there and JASDF has its E-2s and F-2s based there.
- Komaki (old Nagoya) - JASDF has C-130s based there and in the near future the KC-767. It's pretty quiet commercially because most of that went to Centrair.
- Komatsu - two squadrons of F-15s are based there.
- Yonago or Miho (Totori-ken) - JASDF has C-1s & YS-11s based there with a handful of commercial flights.

In the future:
- Hyakuri - JASDF has RF-4s & F-15s based there and its all military but they are building a second 2,700m runway and a passenger terminal. Should open in a couple of years.

The above are the main military and civil airfields in Japan with some other airfield incorporating units of the Army at some places like Akita and Kumamoto.

Lastly, I would like to mention, Bangkok Don Muang, though most of the commercial ops have moved to the new (falling apart) airport.

I am suprised no one said RNO, it may not be the busiest airport, but I often see aggressor F-16s/F-18s etc. Not to mention the ANG C-130s. Just yesterday a C-17 made a visit. I also have seen T-2's/F-5's/T-45. I also see a few military choppers time to time:

One I never understood was Montgomery, AL.

The Alabama ANG has a couple F16s based at MGM, while Maxwell Air Force Base is only 5 miles away.

In the US, MRB is open to GA as well as military A/C, and I believe will soon be seeing C17's. Last time I flew there (on my solo cross-country) I saw what I think is a C-5.

In Norway, I can think of BOO (Bodö, I can't write it with the Norwegian spelling with my keyboard). and Andenes.

KSDF-LOUISVILLE INTL STANDIFORD FLD-United States

SDF is not only home to UPS, but to the Kentucky Air National Guard's squadron of C-130s. We also see occasional C-17s, C-5s, and for some reason, F-18s

Quoting N328KF (Reply 9):
I can attest to this. I used to fly TW in and out of STL all the time and in 1996-1997, I'd see F-15s lined up at both the McDonnell plant and, across the runway, the ANG facility. This was when the F-15E production was still in high gear and so there were tons of them around.

I remember seeing Harriers lifting off at STL. Late 70's, I think. I think McDD built them there under license?

Quoting OPNLguy (Reply 11):
In the US, the only ones that come readily to mind are Scott AFB (BLV), Charleston AFB (CHS), Eglin AFB (VPS), Kirtland AFB (ABQ), Sheppard AFB (SPS), and Ft. Hood (GRK). Yuma MCAS is also joint use. Can't think of any Navy bases right off the bat.

Out of all that, I think you missed COS. Still Peterson AFB, Space Wing. Has some transports stationed there, plus any transient AF or ANG who might need to land.

ZAG/LDZA (Pleso, Zagreb, Croatia) is also a dual civil airport/airbase. Seeing MiG-21s, An-32s and PC-9s mixed with the regular commercial traffic is not at all uncommon, especially now that the weather's fine.

Although none are actually based here at RIX, recently we've seen a flurry of F-10s, F-16s, C-130s, MiG-29s and British Tornados -- depending on which NATO country is guarding the Russian border at the given three-month interval. They are currently based in Lithuania, but will come over to RIX in the near future. By the way, the MiG-29s are Polish. There were also the last two Canberras two years ago to take photo recon before the squadron was dissolved.

Quoting Cubsrule (Reply 3):
And even at some American airports that don't technically qualify as 'joint use,' you'll see military planes on a fairly regular basis.

- Count IND in as one of those airports, almost a daily occurrance

Quoting Cubsrule (Reply 3):
(and I think the MO ANG flies them out of STL as well, but I'm not sure about that).

- The MO ANG were flying them as of a couple years ago, I haven't been to STL in a while

Quoting Zeke (Reply 37):
KGUS-GRISSOM ARB-United States

- But Grissom does not have passenger flights, just cargo and KC-135s

- FWA has an ANG unit there, it's the 122nd Fighter Wing, The Black Snakes http://www.inftwa.ang.af.mil/ and HUF has both cargo flights (no passenger flights) and the 181st Fighter Wing http://www.interr.ang.af.mil/

In the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, Campbeltown Airport (civilian) shares it's runway with the infamous RAF Machrihanish (military / NATO). The military base is currently classed by what is termed "care and maintenance".

Hickham AFB/HNL International share runway facilities. Hickam is home to KC-10's, KC-135's, C-5A's, C-17's, F-18's and soon the F-22.
