Emirates A380s Will Have Showers

Sun Aug 12, 2007 12:29 am

Just seem am interview with Emirates CEO on Bloomberg. He said that the A380s will indeed have on board showers and will be 'unlike any of our existing aircraft'.

Wonder if they'll have time limits...

I can just see a guy taking a 45 minute shower and exhausting all the water on the flight.  Silly

I highly doubt EK wouldn't check this problem by putting a limit on H2O consumption per shower session. I think 5-7 minutes of reasonable water pressure is Ok no?

There will be a very, very small water tank and the water will be filtered and recycled.

These shower systems re-use water, after purifying it. Boeing demonstrated a similar shower a few years back and it used 3 litres per person each time.

Correct, and before everybody sharts shouting ''eeeewwwwww'', I suggest we all take a look at how many times the tap water is recycled in major cities before we drink it.

And it should get those Anetters with "seatbelt sign" phobias something more to worry about....

Exactly. The typical glass of drinking water contains between 5000 and 10000 water molecules that passed through the bladder of Jesuah bin Josef (Jesus of Nazereth). The recycled water in an airliner shower will be a lot purer than bottled or tap water.

Once?

Drinking water is not recycled in the USA. It is treated and released, and new water is used for drinking. In some places, water is recycled to use in agriculture, but you shouldn't drink that...

HIV isn't that contagious and the virus is quite unstable since it's a RNA virus. The odds of the plane crashing is an infinately bigger risk.

fair use excerpt:

"ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS is promising passengers a new experience when they fly The Boeing Co.'s 787 Dreamliner.

The Japanese airline will "refresh the parts that other airlines can't reach," Mineo Yamamoto, president and chief executive of All Nippon Airways of Japan, said through an interpreter recently.

He wasn't talking about breath mints.

The new in-flight amenity to be offered by ANA is a bidet. It will be an industry first, at least for commercial jet travel."

We shall not forget that a first class round trip flight between as example LHR and Beijing costs today about $ 13,000, (assuming that the luxury EK will cost the same) compared with $ 3,300 Business and $ 1,700 Coach !!

The flight time direct is about 11 h non-stop, compared with 14 1/2 via Dubai, plus 1 1/2 hours lay off in Dubai in the most favorable case = 16 hours.

(data is from Expedia and the EK website)

If I am a F passenger (normally not so young) I would not spent 5 hours more travelling, incl. probably aircraft changes, because of a shower and some more entertainment, not even considering the fact that many prefer to travel in their own country's airline !

An afterthought:
Cities which recirculate generally a small percentage of used water into the fresh water circuit use very sophisticated and strictly supervised treatment plants.
There are also highly reliable mini-plants which can recirculate 100% of very soiled used water, but they work very slowly and for small volumes (as the spacecraft use, at astronomical   prices! )
But plants feeding such water to an only small reservoir and able to produce a high flow as eventual several consecutive shower require, recirculating 100% of the input, are much less reliable and even so, need a lot of automatic control and instrumentation.
I am not so sure, knowing where the water comes from, if I would like to use such facility !

But of course, the A380 could afford, at a cost no doubt, to carry enough fresh water so not to use re-treated one!

That was one of the "ding" phrases of this post. For F class... it has to be a given. Once one airline offers it, the amenity will become expected (a la "lie flat beds in J"). However, I think it would be a differentiator for J too. Yes, EK's lounges have showers, but there is something about arriving clean that is worth a bunch.

For DXB-JFK, a definite plus. I can see this selling seats.

EK (and EY, QR, etc.) compete on price, undercutting carriers offering nonstop service. It's often possible to get an F ticket on EK or QR for LHR-SIN for the same price SQ are getting for C class. Showers will give EK a bit of pricing power, but not enough to match nonstop service without showers.

Unfortunately, they would have to have a first class water treatment plant to recycle the water for a shower. That is because shower water must be potable.

HIV is just one of many viruses that can be spread through water, and since people can and do ingest water while showering, the water -- if recycled -- must be "fit for human consumption" at least in the USA. That includes filtering as well as chemical treatment, typically with chlorine. I suspect that EK will quietly drop this idea when they discover all the issues, or they will simply used water once.

Otherwise, they will be open to all sorts of law suits from people who "mysteriously" caught something in the shower.

If this was correct and the EK CEO is not drunk while saying that he will put showers in the aircraft, i think what would happen is the following. (i am sure this will be only for F class travellers)

As soon as you board the aircraft, the F/A will ask you if you would like to use the shower before you land in your destination. If you said yes your name will be registered and the same with other passengers, one by one.
The shower it self will be like a normal shower tray, covered with glass, where you go in and close the door and take the mini-shower. Not to forget that EK will put the finest shampoos, soaps, conditioners.....etc.
Furthermore, i think that they will provide iron service for you.

It might be a combination shower and toilet, like on some RV's. Basically, the a water spray and a drain in a water proofed room.

Quoting Poitin (Reply 29):
HIV is just one of many viruses that can be spread through water

No, it is NOT. HIV is one of the most fragile and unstable viruses around, and are also quite easy to filter out, but just contact with air and water will render it innactive.

Quoting Poitin (Reply 29):
people can and do ingest water while showering, the water

Correct.

Quoting Poitin (Reply 29):
if recycled -- must be "fit for human consumption" at least in the USA

Incorrect. Many airlines lable the washroom/sink water as "Not Potable - Do Not Drink". That warning is acceptable for tap water, in planes and ships, and I'm reasonably sure it is sufficient for showers as well.

Quoting TKV (Reply 30):
Anyway, as said, they really could do it without recirculating.

It will be done with "first use water". They MAY recerculate shower water runoff for toilet use but I HIGHLY DOUBT EVEN THAT. People do all sorts of things in the shower (peeing being just one of the most innocuous one), so shower runnoff water is ALWAYS considered a bio hazzard. Purifying that for even toilet use is a complex and time consuming affair. My guess is that they are better off bringing the water alone and discharging rather than purifying it.

Think of it. Most showers are likely to be towards the end of the flight (on overnights, after you sleep). If they have 20 F seats (on the high side) and 20% take a shower (also on the high side) that is 4 showers say 2 hours prior to landing. At 5 galons/shower (on the high side for the shower type that you need to step on a valve to get water), that is 20 galons of water, less thatn 200 lbs. No big deal. And no need to deal with having to explain to F passengers that the water for your shower came from the shower of the nice big oil business man seated on 2 A.

Come one people. It is a simple nicety/bonus/bragging rights freebie. Don't you think EK has enough sense to avoid the negative marketing pitfalls of using someone else's runnoff to shower an F passenger?

They may also be sued by passengers who slip and fall and break a few bones in the shower. Slippery showers, soap and the fact that turbulence is hard to predict and can be severe are not a good combination. Even on dry land, bathtubs and showers are one of the most dangerous places for accidents in the home.

In my opinion it would make more sense to expand the availability of shower facilities in airport lounges (including arrival lounges) where you can take a shower at leisure, and forget about such gimmicks on board aircraft.

That is an interesting suggestion. It's amazing how many otherwise excellent airlines e.g. SQ do not provide lounge and shower access to arriving passengers.

Your assumption is incorrect in that your not taking into account price as a factor here. How do you think EK has done so well so far ? As was mentioned previously a lot of people will take the cheaper flight if it saves them a decent amount of cash.

An example if you will; I fly regularly between the UK and the US, now I can fly direct to my usual destination, but during the summer months when prices are at their highest their is usually a £300 price difference between taking the direct flight usually on VS or BA compared with taking an in-direct flight on a US carrier. The in-direct flights usually have total travel times around 3-4 hours longer than if I just went direct. But hold on £300 saving for that little inconvenience on a day where all your doing is travelling anyway is not something I nor most folk would walk away from. And what if you where in a family group. The bigger your group is that in-direct flight's going to be saving you a lot of money.

The above is exactly what EK is providing, in-direct cheaper priced flights and usually from local airports. The same does apply for flights in all classes, not everyone is time sensitive. If they where than airlines such as EK and SQ's of the world wouldn't exist.

Now will those flying F or J go out of their way just to go to DXB and have a shower before arrival....no probably not. But it's a service they'd probably be getting because like most humans price is a factor and if they can save £1000-3000+ per ticket flying via DXB on EK they'll be on that plane. The shower is just an added bonus, but one which can easily garner return custom.

Otherwise, they will be open to all sorts of law suits from people who "mysteriously" caught something in the shower.

You are absolutely correct on all your points. Expect EK to either have this feature on the Sultan's personal plane, or that it will quietly disappear.

if recycled -- must be "fit for human consumption" at least in the USA

Incorrect. Many airlines lable the washroom/sink water as "Not Potable - Do Not Drink". That warning is acceptable for tap water, in planes and ships, and I'm reasonably sure it is sufficient for showers as well.

This is a US EPA health requirement. Maybe not in the rest of the world, but certainly in the USA. And for your information, I wouldn't drink any water on any airplane that did not come out of a bottle.

One further point, except for the blue water used in toilets, NONE of the water on airplanes is recycled today. And even then, they are finding all sorts of stuff growing in the water tanks. Now you want to recycle bathing water? Right, sure.

Come one people. It is a simple nicety/bonus/bragging rights freebie. Don't you think EK has enough sense to avoid the negative marketing pitfalls of using someone else's runoff to shower an F passenger?

This warning is NOT acceptable for a shower, as more often than not people drinks unintentionally some of its water.

And YES: As even if 7 (33%) of people would take a shower, at 25 liters (~6.5 gallons) each, this would require only ~47 gallons of fresh water, about 385 lbs !! Certainly not a big deal.!
I think this is a non issue by itself and because as I said before, people will not forfeit a non stop flight
in favor of a hub in Dubai only to take a shower !!
By the way: the idea of the recycling originated at EK or at an a-netter ??

385 lbs on an airliner is a big deal.

Sure, but Nnot if it helps to attract a sole additional F-Class passenger. And I think that the real figure will be more as 250 lbs. And the A380 with less than 500 pax has a lot of reserve !! Also the Water treatment plant with all its paraphernalia has a weight, maintenance costs !

The whole idea of showers on an airplane sounds pretty disgusting. Yes, it would be a commercial aviation first, but what about the health and safety risks? Not just the hygene issues - also the other issues raised of turbulence etc. would need to be addressed.

Obviously Emirates have thought this through, but it's going to be a big task keeping the showers clean during the flight. Most airlines can barely manage to keep their toilets clean!

That is an interesting suggestion. It's amazing how many otherwise excellent airlines e.g. SQ do not provide lounge and shower access to arriving passengers.

....though not in most of its airports, AA does provide such services at its Flagship/Arrivals lounge for full-fare F (F/Z) customers..as well as for $50+VAT for economy pax flying into LHR...

Also think about some guy or girl using way too much soap or shampoo. how can those chemicals all be filtered out, someone could be allergic to the specific product they used.

wasn't SRB the first one to mention that he was going to put these on his 380s way back when? I didn't see it happening then at VS and I don't see it happening now on EK either. Wouldn't it be a lot more convenient to take a shower in the lounge?

There will be a very, very small water tank and the water will be filtered and recycled.

That in itself will place a dampen of the demand for showers in the air.

Quoting Zvezda (Reply 10):
The recycled water in an airliner shower will be a lot purer than bottled or tap water.

Still! Some people will just balk at the idea of freshly recycled water possibly containing pure and freshly recycled bodily fluids.
