Just NOW Extreme LOW FLY Over New York City

Sun Aug 19, 2007 9:27 am

Just got woken up by a fellow aviation fan that lives in New York City. He said that he was standing on the corner of East 85th Street and First Ave, he witnessed a what appeared to be United Airlines 757 flying no more than 2500 feet heading into Manhattan, the aircraft turned over 85th Street headed south and turned out again to the East at about East 77th Street, does anyone know anything about this?

WOW

Looks like they had a problem somewhere along the route looking at the following:

19:59 41.57 -76.75 549 39000
20:00 41.52 -76.57 549 23000
20:01 41.47 -76.37 544 37600

I cant remember a 16000 ft drop within one minute normal, nor a 14600 ft climb the next minute normal?

Near Miss?

Flightaware is notorious for reporting incorrect altitude information like this, You could almost view any flight and find similar altitude variances.

I have seen such variances on PASSUR also. I have tracked flights coming into various airports and when they start their descents, I have seen the numbers jump all over the place.

Airliners are not capable of climbing 14600 feet per minute -- not even a lightly loaded 757.

I think your reference is skewed.

77th to 85th street is 0.4 miles. Wouldn't a 757 have to pull crazy Gs to do a 180 in 0.2 mile radius?

Great video, never gets old. However, that plane is NOT climbing vertically. It reaches a maximum of about 45 degrees climb, but appears to be vertical due to the camera being where it is in relation to the aircraft. Its just an optical effect.

They were really pushing that 757.. good crew,, I was looking at the others on you tube and it is getting swamped with pilot wanabes on the fs simulator makeing their own videos. I thought i was watching a ual 747 make an emergency landing in fargo and it was that game again They shoud block those for the real emergencies and real airplanes
i can see for 80 miles

Many aircraft can climb like that... the shuttle FAR exceeds that climb rate. There is just no reason for commercial airliners to have the power to weight ratio needed for that kind of manuver. That said, I'd imagine extreme updrafts could move a 757 up at 14k+ FPM, but such instances would be rare and I doubt they'd continue for a full minute. Someone with more knowledge than me can figure out what sort of load factor that would be.

Also note in the video, the climb is done at around 45 degrees, not anywhere near vertical. Still very impressive though.

Why do people see ridiculous altitude readings like this from a frickin' website and, rather than faulting the crappy website, instead immediately question why the aircraft dropped/climbed/was even at such an altitude? There are entire threads on this more often than I can understand! It's a website and it's very often innacurate, it's not like you're an ATCer sitting at a scope.

I've had the great pleasure of doing aerobatics in an A319. Of course, that was not a commercial flight. It was during acceptance flight testing. BTW, I was in the cockpit jumpseat, not at the controls.

These websites (Passur, FlightAware) are good to look at, are somewhat accurate, but mistakes do occur. A few weeks ago I was tracking AC2 (Tokyo - Toronto) and Flightaware showed the plane somewhere near Halifax!!

Last time that a UA 757 was flying low over New York city was on 9/11.And we all know the rest of the story.

I find it very strange that a similar thing has happened again.

P.S:It is strange that airliners are fly low over NYC.

Actually, it's most probably the data from the FAA feed and not a problem with flightaware. The trackers don't make this data up... some calculate times, and other values, but I'm guessing this is straight from FAA data.

edited to add: just checked some data, and it did indeed come from the feed as FL230 ... incorrectly.

Just saw this post, I witnessed this from LGA, LGA was up and down Rwy 31, due to departing traffic the UA 757 on very short final to 31 at LGA exucuted a go-around and turned west till right over Manhatten, followed by two left tunns to rejoin the Expressway visual approach to Runway 31 at LGA. All in all pretty routine, was approx 800PM when this occured, I remember thinking what a great view for the passengers!

If you go to http://www4.passur.com/lga.html and set the date to 18 Aug and the time to 2007 you'll see UA 894 (DEN-LGA) doing the Expressway Visual to LGA runway 31 followed by a go-around.

Never said I did believe in Santa Claus, I just don't make a point of spoiling other peoples fun. However, 45 degrees AOA is NOT the maximum during this maneuver.

True, I did. But the debate here was the maximum climb angle. One member claimed it never goes beyond 45 degrees.

From the article....

Quote:
The low pass is flown into wind at 350 knots (indicated) and 100 feet above the runway. It's a 2g pull up to between 45 and 55 degrees nose up pitch (although there has been higher) and the zoom climb ends at an altitude between 8000 and 10000 feet depending on the type of pull up used.

Actually, it's most probably the data from the FAA feed and not a problem with flightaware.

I've said this before in another thread, and I'll say it again here. My theory is that the extreme jumps in altitude are controller inputs, i.e.; "Descend and maintain FL250," or "Amend your climb to 15,000." The next few blocks afterward is the result of the altitude change.

So, in essense what happened here:

Quoting FLYGUY767 (Reply 2):
19:59 41.57 -76.75 549 39000
20:00 41.52 -76.57 549 23000
20:01 41.47 -76.37 544 37600

The PIC was given a clearance to descend to FL230 at the pilot's descretion, and sometime later started his descent, alerted the controller, the controller put in the new altitude reflecting the executed clearance. Then, the next radar block came in reporting his altitude of 37,600. So, in other words, he was doing a 1,500 ft/min descent.

In a normal descent clearance, the jump would occur, then go back to the altitude it was for a couple of returns, then start descending.

Yes, I agree. My only point was that it had nothing to do with Flightaware's 'crappy website'. In fact, all the companies using that feed would have reported the same data.

Afraid not. To many conspiracy theorists were getting to close to the real truth.

The fact that the current administration has the capability to shrink people enough to fit down chimneys.

The real reason that those black helicopters operate silently is technology that is currently used on the sled - think about it.

Then there is also the lies that Rudolph's nose glows, it's actually a top secret laser finder to shoot down anything from dragon flies to geosynchronous orbiting spy satellites.

Don't even get me started on explaining how 8-9 reindeer can fly with no source of propulsion.

It's all just to coincidental.
