Batavia Air Buys 10 ATR72s.New LCC Concept?

ATR got a firm order from Batavia Air for 10 ATR72s + 10 options.

After Air Deccan , Kingfisher , Jet aw , and perhaps some others , are the combos A32x/ATR or 737NG/ATR winners for LCC carriers ? The ATRs seem perfect for seconday airports , bringing passengers to the main hubs.
Where are the DHC-8s here ?

I personally think this is a great idea. I would imagine their cost base is lower than Merpati, IAT, DAS and others, so that, combined with their potentially higher profile could make this venture a real winner.

There are plenty of routes in Indonesia that are perfect for these aircraft (Nusa Tenggara, Papua, Kalimantan...etc). It would also be interesting to see if they try other concepts with these aircraft. For example, I believe there are only 2 daily flights between Yogya and Surabaya (1 Wings M82 and 1 Batavia 732). It would be interesting to see if they would give something like a 4 times+ daily service between the two centres a go using these smaller aircraft.

Perhaps these would be in competition with MASWings ATR72-500s?.....

Apparently, those lost in the selection process - from the link.....

Quote:
"Meanwhile, Indonesia's Batavia Air is close to deciding on an order for up to 15 turboprops, either ATR 72-500s or Bombardier Dash 8 Q400s. Batavia Air president director Yudiawan Tansari says he will decide at the 'end of this month or first week of September'."

Also very interesting is MASWings plan to order DHC6-400s from Viking Air.....

Quote:
"He also says the airline plans to order Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft for delivery in 2011. The Series 400 is in development and is an upgraded version of the Twin Otter DHC-6-300. Khan does not say how many Twin Otters will be ordered, but says the aircraft will replace the airline's five DHC-6-300s, which are to be phased out in 2011."

I don't know about the jets, but the ATRs and TwOtters look like a winning combination.
