SQ First A380 Flight Ticket Bidding Starts Today!

SQ launched their bids for their first A380 flight SIN-SYD-SIN today as announced about a month ago, however it's merely possible to bid for one-way tickets. All the revenue earned will be spent for charity reasons.

So, who's going for it?

That should hopefully mean that SQ will be releasing what their new cabins will look like very shortly. know I would rather bid for a product that I knew what it looked like compared to a promised product with no proof of how much its actually worth. I realize that the first flight is more of a deal of being on the first revenue A380 flight, but still these are going to be spendy tickets and I think it would help people to know exactly what they are bidding on!

Its good news though!!! Also a great idea on SQ's part, not only are they doing something good by giving it away to charity it also makes them look good and good PR, now they have people like me that think they are great!

If you go to the eBay pages from SQs page, you can take a small peek at the business and economy class seats. Those business seats really look wide, if they are from the real thing!

I will try for Economy but fat chance I will get anything.
I have registered to bid in the less than $1000 category for both flights,
no bank deposit required.
I am not a rich folk although I live in one of the world's wealthiest places.

I have done a counting with the total 473 seats available on the aircraft.

200 seats I would already consider gone to those 80 lucky people who deposited
$ 10,000 and the 120 who deposited $ 1,000+

About 3/4 of the seats will be available on auction, that's about 350
it means that there will be a total of 150 seats left to bid on.

It's common knowledge that SQ will use the same business and economy seats from the 77W on the A380. Originally, they were to recieve the A380 before the 77W, and release those two classes then and there.

I really want to bid, but I'm kinda out of money, and it's impossible to talk my parents into trying.

I wonder what time they will start having them on line? Confused

They probably have a full secretarial line just for this auction alone.
Transactions on ebay (listing items, answering questions, etc.) are time consuming.

Now that SIA is doing the charity auction I am sure ANA will do the same thing for the 787 inaugural flight. Only there will be less seats auctioned off as it looks like it might carry less passengers, then you have to count on the guests on board, etc.

Same here. I'd like to fly on one someday, but it's not that important to me to be on the absolute first flight. I have always wanted to take a vacation to Austrailia, so perhaps when Qantas starts flying them to the US...

This is what was my idea for a A380 non revenue inaugural flight.

I would have sold lottery tickets for 10 Singapore Dollars each through the Singapore newspapers, Straits Times and Singapore FT for people to buy. Only one ticket per person, non transferable. Singapore citizens residing in Singapore would be the only ones to be allowed to bid.

Then I would have had a drawing. The winners in the drawing would be the ones going on the inaugural flight both ways.

I would have asked the airports (Singapore and Sydney), the oil companies providing the fuel for the flight and the cockpit and cabin crews on board and on the ground to work or contribute their services for free.

It would have been a people's flight for Singaporeans, not for rich foreigners. The publicity for SIA might have been even greater.

Strange.... All the return flights from SYD on the 26th Oct are listed as 747-400s.... Is the 380 operating an additional rotation this day or will one of those 747-400s actually be operated by a 380?

The WhaleJet flight will be in addition to the regularly scheduled JumboJet services.

How about the BA way. After the Gulf War ended on 28 February 1991 they kick started their business by offering every seat on all their flights on 23 April 1991 free of charge plus a free-of-charge return flight on the date chosen by the passenger. It was first come, first served. It was called "The World's Biggest Offer":

Then when they returned Concorde to service after the CDG disaster they offered 100 seats free of charge. Again it was first come, first served. I think I recall that the booking telephone line opened at eleven o'clock one evening (British time). This would have been midnight French time. I mention this because I recall that a Frenchman happened to phone the BA booking line at midnight French time to book a LHR-JFK Concorde flight. He expected to pay what I regard as a small fortune. He actually got through despite all the lines being tied up by thousands of hopeful callers and to his surprise got his flight for free.

I dont see it as a bad term at all. Its a bit like the Jumbo being an elephant. Whales are great creatures. I think the name whaleget is used with affection

I am sure they could have found another way to get the money to charities by donating part of each A380 paid ticket on the regular flights. Sad

I don't agree at all.

The A380 is being delivered to SQ - a commercial entity, who mainly derive their income from transporting foreigners, some of whom may even be rich.

It's not being delivered to the government or people of Singapore.

Furthermore the A380 will mean exactly zero for the Singapore transportation infrastructure.
