If you were to visit their website, you would see that their premium offerings on long haul flights are WAY above what is being offered on any North American carriers flying the skies today. If only they knew how to market themselves properly. Broken English and a semi-user freindly webbie aren't exactly the makings of a first class airline.

yes, their seats are better, no their cabin crew are not better. or maybe I'm just unlucky and every CA flight I've been on (probably about a dozen in last 4 years) had the least service oriented FAs of any major East Asian airline! Though I will have to say I've almost no experience on any other mainland Chinese carrier.
I'm not knocking them, I fly UA usually so I feel quite at home!

Sure they can fly all the new 744s, A330s, 777s, etc all they want, but they need to improve cabin service (i.e no more zombie FA's) if they'd like to be a force to be reckoned with.

Smells like politics to me, a sign of support for the Sudanese government as the West tries to separate China from Sudan politically in order to stop the Darfur genocide. Don't know if the route will be profitable though, but it could be I suppose, given the amount of oil Sudan exports to China. Still smells like Beijing is playing politics though.
On a side note, it will be interesting to see what the increase in traffic will be like on Air China as the Summer Olympics in Beijing approach.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Air China has passed SQ as most valuable airline in the world.
The Chinese equity market has almost exploded last years, and Air China's share has surged alot.
They must do something right I guess?
Heard from friends that their new business class "Capital Pavilion" and first class "Forbidden Pavilion" is very nice.
They will introduce that cabin on four new routes from Sept 1st.
Those are PEK-LHR, PEK-MAD-GRU, PVG-MXP-FCO and PVG-CDG.

That's quite true. they have 320, 330, 340, as well as 737~777, and is going to have 787.

I just flew CA from beijing to chengdu on a 737. plane was comfortable and clean and the service was amazing. I didnt expect much as i have flown a few of the chinese carriers but CA definitley exceeded my expectations. Big meal for such a short flight and the crew were thorough with safety checks ect.
possibily i just had a good crew

is it possible to earn miles on CA with * alliance card yet. i saw a couple of there aircraft sporting the * logo.

You can earn Air New Zealand Airpoints across the entire CA network. Other *A FFP's that can earn miles with CA are LH, UA, NH, SK, & FM (no status credit as yet until official entry in December).

I've flown with CA 44 times and CZ 98 times. CZ is a much better run operation, better equipment, and better looking FAs.

Could you, please, for a moment consider that the rest of the world doesn't revolve around the English/American virtual empire. The www is controlled by USA, the English language is NOT native in China. 1.3b+ chinese are quite happy with speaking their native language and companies (i presume) would cater mostly to their home base. I'd suggest you learn some Chinese and then we can talk about whether Air China are not a First Class airline. I agree Air China are a bit old school but believe me I flew with them 6 times in the last 12 months and they are very service-oriented, efficient and they do try harder. On another note IB, CO, US and others all have a great and user-friendly site but are dreadful to the passenger in many reports.

I myself am fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien (a dialect spoken in Fujian and Taiwan)... in addition to English, Thai, Bahasa Malay and Bahasa Indonesian, thank you very much.
The world DOES revolve around speaking English in the commercial world, unfortunately, as much as you want to steer away from the enroachment of American culture. In China, yes, learning to speak the chinese language is a HUGE must otherwise they won't even want to deal with you. I should know because of my numerous business dealings with Shanghai, Suzhou and Xiamen. However, when you look at the global view, English is a language that binds us all. Otherwise, how do you suggest we communicate here on airliners.net?
Therefore, I admire Air China's effort to better themselves and they have since woken up and realised that the world of aviation is moving on whether you like it or not. It is a case of shape up or lose out. However, like the rest of China, this meteoric rise towards modernisation isn't consistent. Some tend to rise faster than others, which leads to somewhat rather amusing words being strung together after being translated directly from the Chinese language.
Air China is no exception to this, as in China Eastern and China Southern. So now, am I allowed to say that a First Class airline Air China isn't? But getting there, they will eventually.

I never suggested I want to steer away from American culture. I love Big Mac and Coca Cola
In fact I have an American passport. What I wanted to convey to you is that if an airline doesn't have a shiny website that doesn't automatically degrades them from being a fine carrier. All i meant was that your way of grading was a bit superficial. Next thing someone says US carriers largely don't serve food on domestic flights and because of that are not 1st class carriers but cheap Greyhound-like cattle transportation service or even better that American flight attendants are fat and they wear ugly uniforms therefore they are definitely not 1st class. (those examples were frequently discussed here at A.Net). I wouldn't judge or grade anyone based on my own cultural perceptions because I don't believe my view of these things to be paramount nor superior than that of others.| Quoting Ryanair!!! I agree but that is irrelevant to my comment since it wasn't targeted at the English language at all.
