AirTran Beefs Up Florida

Fri Aug 31, 2007 4:36 am

(Mods please don't delete, this thread covers the wider spectrum of FL's new expansion)

Looks like we'll be seeing the following (in addition to MKE-PHX/RSW/TPA):

new CAK-RSW starting 07NOV07
FL916 CAK0700 - 0929RSW
FL919 RSW1705 - 1934CAK

8x weeklies (daily+ 2 daily on Sat.) on BWI-MIA effective 15NOV07
FL150 BWI0800 - 1035MIA D
FL151 MIA1110 - 1345BWI D

FL152 BWI1151 - 1426MIA 6
FL153 MIA1501 - 1736BWI 6

Daily BWI-PBI effective 15NOV07
FL920 BWI0800 - 1025PBI x6
FL921 PBI1110 - 1330BWI x6

FL920 BWI0830 - 1055PBI 6
FL921 PBI1155 - 1405BWI 6

2x Daily on BOS-RSW effective 07NOV07

FL870 MDW1424 - 1805RSW
FL821 RSW1825 - 2018MDW

2nd Daily effective 14FEB08
FL820 MDW1232 - 1613RSW

1x Daily FNT-RSW effective 07NOV07
FL603 FNT1339 - 1630RSW
FL606 RSW1014 - 1304FNT

1x Daily ROC-FLL effective 15NOV07
FL876 ROC1129 - 1427FLL
FL871 FLL0800 - 1055ROC

1x Daily HPN-RSW effective 15NOV07
FL374 HPN1347 - 1644RSW
FL375 RSW1809 - 2100HPN

1x Daily MCO-RDU effective 14FEB08
FL464 RDU0945 - 1125MCO
FL467 MCO0845 - 1020RDU

IMO, these low-yielding routes should hang around for a while as they are largely holiday routes, where FL has successfully carved a niche for itself. Alot of new/expanded service to RSW (dubbed "Redneck Riveria" by some), this gives FL a even stronger foothold in the market and further solidify it's position as #1 (or propel it to #1).

I continue to be baffled as to why FL is adding BOS-Florida routes. First BOS-PBI, now BOS-RSW. One would think that the yields were already killed by B6 and DL.

HPN-RSW is also an interesting route, but FL has done quite well out of HPN.

Thanks for collecting this information.

You are way off, the Redneck riviera is the nortwestern coast of florida, roughly from Panama City to Pensacola, although some include Mobile alabama. Fort Myers is nowhere near the redneck riviera.

Choosing to go head-to-head with both DL and WN on this route. Well, it gives me one more option when I fly home (Florida-North Carolina) over the breaks, even though the times aren't since I'd be driving in from Daytona and usually take evening flights so I can get home on the last day of classes before the break rather than waiting till the morning after to leave..

Too bad there's no increase in DAB service in the mean time. Oh well. I didn't really expect to see any anyway.

These aren't new routes. None of them. They are all seasonal routes resuming. MIA/PBI-BWI are "new" in the sense they used to operate year-round and did not operate last year at all. AirTran's Florida routes are inconsistent all the time.

Try PFN through MOB, possibly GPT.

Um, I know for a fact that MCO-RDU is a new route for FL. DL and WN are the only carriers on the route non-stop right now. AA served the route at one point, but to my knowledge, FL has never served MCO-RDU. Currently, their interactive route-map shows the only city served out of RDU is ATL.

Hahahah.. technicality actually...

RDU-MCO is new for AirTran.. but not for AirTran/ValuJet... ValuJet and AirTran/ValuJet flew RDU-MCO/IAD/ATL/BOS? before AirTran dropped all but ATL..

Thank goodness! There's no place to put a raceway anyhow.

AirTran is one to watch. I don't know what's up, but i think they are busy setting some sort of longer term plan into motion.
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

I think they will do some increase from the 1x daily, it just hasn't been determined yet, since DAB is not terribly competitive they will likely announce the DAB adds last. They also have to work out the ground handling issues now that the airport took over the under-wing operation for FL at DAB.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Yes the average yearly income for a tourists visiting the Ft. Myers area currently stands at $101,000 per year. Hardly a "Redneck Riviera."

Also, this is not "new" service to RSW from FL. It is FL bringing back the seasonal nonstops they offered last year. Why they feel the need to announce press releases every year concerning this is beyond me.

Chill out dude. I'm got even talking to you. I was just letting people know that the RSW routes are not new. It was directed at everyone that may not know that. Nothing against you.

Kinda true. Valujet only operated nonstop, non-ATL flying out of RDU prior to the crash and shutdown (long before AirTran came into the picture). Being based in BOS at the time, I often worked RDU flights. RDU service included ATL, MCO, TPA, IAD, PHL, FLL, and BOS.

AirTran is skilled and successful in the press release department, and every late summer it seems there are seasonal route resumptions that sounds like expansion. Some markets are of course new, others not.

Airlines rarely point out drops or cancelled resumptions, AirTran and others. But some of the AirTran Florida expansion this year is being offset by routes from last winter not being resumed. These include:

IND-PBI
IND-MIA
MDW-PBI
BOS-SRQ (sat/sun)
BOS-FLL
FLL-BUF (sat/sun)
FLL-CAK
FLL-SWF
TPA-HPN
MCO-DCA (sat/sun)
MCO-BMI (mon-fri axed, continues sat/sun)

Of particular interest (to me, at least) are the drops at Indianapolis, Midway and Boston. A year or two ago IND, MDW and BOS all seemed to be promising cities of expanded AirTran focus. Now all three have recently seen notable pullbacks. Every airline has successes and failures, but it doesn't seem that AirTran is having luck with a lot of their newer markets -- even Florida.

Correct me if I'm wrong Knope, but I don't recall there ever having been an MCO-DCA flight. There was a Saturday only DCA-MCO that I took multiple times to go see football games, but I don't recall a direct return flight. I usually flew DCA-MCO and then MCO-BWI.

Route changes for FL at IND are odd but overall the total number of daily departures remains unchanged. They may have dropped MIA and PBI which were only alternate days so the two combined routes equaled 1x daily. In exchange they have picked up LAS which is 1x daily.

is oversaturated. but MCO is their HDQ/Focus city.

Haha, absolutely hilarious.

Nothing better than the news reporting an airline and its new routes, only to show a picture of the airlines plane stuck in a ditch, nose gear bent inwards, in the middle of a blizzard.  rotfl

'American announces new route featuring it's Super 80's, ORD-DAB [insert stock footage: American MD-80 landing in ORD after bird ingestion in #1 engine, flames and heavy smoke on an overcast day]"
Flying a plane is no diff. from riding a bicycle. Its just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes. -'Airplane'

Didn't think this route would work from the start because of the heavy competition between DL and B6 on the route and not to mention AA's 6x daily to MIA. BOS-RSW has a better chance of becomming profitable but I also think that this route won't return next year

Looks like FL loaded their increased DAB schedule, so far its not as much as they had last year to start, but they are showing 3x ATL plus a sat only BWI starting Dec 15.

Id like to see BWI go daily for Feb-Apr or perhaps an LGA sat only.

I heard there were big plans for IND but that Airtran is having problems keeping ground staff in Indy, partially because NW pays better, so I heard.

Given the number of job listings NW has posted for ground staff I think they have a hard time keeping people. My guess would be these airlines are losing people to FX.

Has AirTran uploaded their new schedules yet? The problem I am seeing is that with the new MCO flight from RDU, they have 2 flights leaving at the same time (RDU-ATL departing 9:45 am, RDU-MCO departing 9:45am) and they only have one gate. When will the ATL retiming actually occur?
