Has Ryanair Gone One Step Too Far This Time?

Fri Aug 31, 2007 6:10 am

Found this in the local paper today advertising flights from Shannon to Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol and Dublin.
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa273/eishn2/08-30-20070957502.jpg

Frankly I'm disgusted at what they're doing here. Could they not get in some kind of trouble from Advertising watchdogs for an image such as this?

They also had that image on the front of the their homepage for a few days this week.
I suppose it could be looked upon as an image of a very slight sexual nature but to be honest its not that bad.
Ryanair will always go that little bit further, they always try to push it to see what the limits are.

Seriously, not smart advertising this won't work in this day and age. Also, people know that FA's don't look like that, well maybe on SQ they do.  Wink

Oh please! I know that most of the people on this site are gay, but I don't see how that is in any way 'disgusting' or 'offensive.'

It's a girl, she has clothes on. Get over it!

Ryanair do this sort of thing, knowing it will generate controversy. It is of course inappropriate in the context of the increasing sexualisation of childhood, which is the subject of a lot of concern nowadays. However that is a matter for debate elsewhere than in an aviation forum.

I may have missed something, but why would someone who's gay find this offensive? It's been my experience that it's straight people who are more hung about "suggestive" or "sexual" images...  rotfl   duck   flamed

It might not pass muster at a Republican convention (at least not publically  wink  ), but considering the ad for Virgin Atlantic Airlines I once saw, it's minor...

Picture Mike Myers dressed as Austin Powers straddling a Virgin Atlantic 747, which the caption, "there's only one virgin on this billboard, baby!!"

Ohhh cummon...

There is nothing perverse and shocking about it!

Has no one ever heard of St Trinian Girls or the 1960's Carry-On Films?!

It was OK then for Barbara Windsor to be dressed up as a Sourcey School Girl, and was every middle aged mans fantasy... These films are still broadcast and there is no issues with them being aired in political correct age here in the UK.

It is just a light-hearted ad, and actually now I finishing typing this... I cannot believe we are discussing this, in this forum!

Are things more conservative in Ireland and the US. Her breasts aren't showing at all and she is not in a provocative position near something or around someone. Are you upset her stomach is showing. Things go ALLOT further in the US. For example the Big Daddy Superbowl commercial and Paris Hilton washing a car for Hardee's. I really don't see where Ryanair crossed a line.

Now, I'm no prude when it comes to sex. And it's much better to see an (obviously) 18+ year old dressed as a schoolgirl than a 14 year old dressed as a whore.

Nor does it say she's an F/A...

Caution RANT!

I blame the threadstarter for not affixing a warning label targeting Americans that this might indeed be a bit risque for their fragile psyches.

Those prudish Americans might just feign false outrage and sue. Witness Jimmy Taggart, pro-family senators liaising with masseurs, shoe-tapping incidents, whole series of Porky's films. Oh, the hyprocrisy of it all. GROW UP! So this ad wasn't targeted at you.

Did they go too far? In the eye of the beholder. Those who might get turned 'on' by the image probably should seek help. There are plenty of shrinks across the pond only too pleased to diagnose a latent psychobabble something and assist you with parting with your hard-earned $$.

In the english-speaking world (as opposed to the American-speaking world) there is a whole genre of comedy revolving around the use of school uniforms. Witness Benny Hill et. al. AC/DC - the band - regularly had their lead singer on stage in a school uniform.

Cold shower, lads!

RANT over.

Ryanair's ads did what they were designed to do - got attention, stimulated discussion (and obviously that's not all they stimulated, judging by this thread), and maybe even get press. Genius marketing department!

Considering that topless nude pictures apprear regularly in many newspapers and magazines throughout Europe, including the Rep. of Ireland, it's not that bad. A bit of questionable taste, but not bad. It did get attention which is what Ryanair wanted.

On another more practical view:-

How can these fares be relevant to going back to school (after the summer break) when three out of the four fares quoted are not even valid until November!

Ryanair has no Brussels-London flights. STN-CRL is NOT London-Brussels. Flying this route if you're traveling between city centers makes no sense whatsoever. Eurostar trains are cheap, very fast, hassle-free, and almost invariably on time. They'll get you from the Grand-Place to Trafalgar Square in 3 hours. Sorry MOL, but only morons think London to Brussels on Ryanair is a viable option. It isn't.

Good airline nevertheless.

Why would that be any more offensive than the 'Study hard' posters depicting a very slightly dressed hottie i can buy at the local mall here?

Let's make it clear that that add (and the mentioned poster/s) has nothing to do with child pornography or anything of that sort just because it's a grown woman dressed as a school girl..these kind of images exist readily.

It's just the old 'Sex sells' mentalitly at play..and it does work, whether you want to admit it or not.

IMHO there is nothing offensive in the least about the advert and I cannot see what all the fuss is about. It shows an adult, albeit wearing school clothes that might be a bit short for some do-gooders or people who lead boring lives, but the whole point of advertising is to attract attention. Again FR has hit the hammer dead on the centre of the nail, as we are even discussing the advert on this site. If FR really wanted to go one step too far, just imagine the backlash if the blond in the picture was wearing a full overcoat on top of her uniform and, heavens forbid, had a lighted cigarette in her mouth! Now that could only be shown on an adults-only website, strictly at the highest level, and for members only.

If the ASA ban this advert, what next? Banning adverts that refer to bottoms? Oh I forgot. They did ban the "Love your bums" toilet tissue advert.

As regards the advert which is quicker to Brussels – Ryanair or Eurostar. Nothing false here as it does not specifically state where the journeys begin and end. If you lived within half-hour's drive of STN and your destination was with half-hour's drive of CRL, it would not take a genius to prove FR is correct in their claim.

Well, 2 x 30 mins commute + check-in at least 40 min. before departure add 1h10 to the journey, making Ryanair the slower option...
Sure, it's just a technicality, and Ryanair can easily win this case. I'll still never consider going to London otherwise than on Eurostar. (Well, maybe BRU-LCY on VG, and even that is barely competitive).

If you think that's the problem... Predators are not created by the fact that there is tempting imagery around. If this were so, we'd all be predators and alcoholics due to the plentiful supply of pretty young girls and alcohol in western society.

Strictly Islamic countries have plenty of predators and in many cases very bad treatment of women. This despite their less than provocative dress code.

Predators should be found and punished. But it is wrong to ban sensuality just because it can push some people over the edge.

Anyway, the girl in the ad is far less provocative than the typical 16 year old US schoolgirl.

fair enough, this would not pass muster in a seriously frustrated country like India, but there is nothing wrong with that advert. Heck, by that logic they should probably ban MTV too...
been there, flown that

If she was 12 then you could complain. The girl is at least 20 I'd say and she is wearing far too many clothes.

And people wonder why there are so many sexual predators who show up on TV looking to get into the underwear of 13 year olds...

She is not at all 13...
