Turkish Aviation September 2007

Sat Sep 01, 2007 11:09 pm

Got the word that TAV, the operator of IST, ADB and ESB, got the permission to operate the small Antalya airport for 25 years. This is such a wrong decision, because this could have been a great GA airport. The plan, according to the news articles, is to have the runway extended and open the field to regular airline traffic.

My highlight of my Turkish Aviation : Flying TK ORD-IST for the first time ever tomorrow. I had to postpone my SEA-AMS-IST trip by two days in order to finish stuff at work.. I hope I get the refurbished 340. (Was it Istanbul?).

I don't quite see what's so wrong about it.. The airport is in Gazipasa and will primarily be used for Alanya. This very popular city is quite far from AYT so it was definetly needed... A small boutique airport... I think it's a very smart move....

I have no idea but I hope you get a refurbished one and take some pictures.. I am very curious  Smile

I about 3 hours, I will be flying to Bodrum on TK's one of two A 319s. That's my highlight of the month so far  Smile

Yes, TC-JDJ.

More news:
TC-JLJ, JLL, JLK will stay in the fleet until 2015. Their leases were due in spring 2009, but THY extended the leases for 6 years .

So next year # of A320 fleet will be 22.

I could see sthg similar happenning to a couple of A321s.

I think the announcement is posted on TK's website in Investor Relations.

I see everybody has his highlight so I add my one: I flew on TC-JNC - TK's third A330 - the first time from IST to LHR and it was definitely a highlight for me  Smile

seems that TK is also very happy about the performance of their A32x family like they're are with the B738.

RE: Turkish Aviation September 2007

As suggested, here is what we have discussed in August 2007:
-TK possibility of strike, good thing it is over now, and will cost TK a lot in the coming years. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a AZ, OA thing.
-TK starts conversion of4x A310s to cargo.
-ACT orders 2x332Fs
-IST A.net meeting, anyone?

Here are some more issues for the short term:
-It is supposedly this month that TK makes its 787/350 selection, can we expect something soon?
-TK resumes JNB/CPT flights Sept.17th. I have a feeling this will do very well.
-Norwegian starts flights to SAW from RYG in March. Don't know if this is an addition to their Oslo flight, but they just ordered 42 738s.

Last month Laxintl suggested that TK was offered 3x380s and we all thought it would be unthinkable. Well I would like to play with the idea that in another 10-15 years maybe TK will have to use maybe not 380s, but 748s or 7773ERs? With the the growing population and civil aviation in Turkey and the congestion at airports TK might go that way. Also can we expect IST to get ready for that? Should IST make plans for the 380?

Thanks for the news. Again a reminder, by 2009 TK has 12 more 320s, 5 more 321s, 8 more 738s, 2 more 332s, 4 more 310Fs, all brand-new. And on top of this 6x734s and now 3x320s keep staying in the fleet with extended leases. Am I right?

I'd agree. However who knows what creative numbers Airbus came up as part of the A350 tender offer. According to traffic studies JFK(summers) and Far East routes could support the A380 in the coming years without a problem.

On another note THY Chief Commercial Officer will be featured speaker at the Business and Premium Leisure Air Travel conference in Madrid during September. It shows how THY network growth is really starting to be noticed and how the carrier is no longer simply a low yield ethnic/tourist airline.

Too bad we all have different schedules,
I already stated that I have a few days, Sept 21-23 in IST, and TurkishWings was up for that. Anyone else?
Bahadir I think is in Turkey and wanted to meet by the 17th.
Others have a good one in Oct.

Few other things:

-More on that 380 front. It seems more and more reasonable to me all of a sudden. In another thread they were talking about EK going with 380 to IST-DXB. Again, what would it take to get IST ready for 380? Also is TK capable of operating 380? Technically, personell, lack of experience in large jets?
-AYT summer numbers look incredible, right? 2,7mil pax in July. Almost up there with big European cities, and what percentage of this traffic is "heavies"? Not much right? AYT is doing this with single aisle traffic, wow. Also I think TK is missing out at AYT. Let me take a wild guess; TK accounts for less than 10% of the traffic at AYT. (Leaving Sunekspress out). Why not TK act more aggressively at AYT, and take a bigger piece of the cake?

Quoting Laxintl (Reply 6):
It shows how THY network growth is really starting to be noticed and how the carrier is no longer simply a low yield ethnic/tourist airline.

-I agree. Go check out airlinequality.com . I was surprised to find TK getting bunch of four stars even though being a 3 star airline. I know that TK is not a 4* airline, but with a push it might get up there. What will it take to do that? Sure service standards, quality have to be raised. Do you think TK needs to introduce a First Class in order to make the jump?
Thanks.

Flew Diyarbakir A340 and landed few hours ago. To my surprise we got the remote parking instead of the gates. It was a nice flight, with good TK legroom and i was lucky enough to get the seat next to me empty. The load on economy was pretty good. Service was nice with some weird things here and there..  Smile

It is always a nice story when we are not in it. (Just like "Midnight Express"(1972), a great film, too bad it takes place in Turkey). I would have hated it to be there when it happened, or to be the person flying business and have to cut in front or to wait behind economy pax.
We all know that Turks, just like many other developing countries, don't like the pleasure of waiting in line. They always would like to go to the front to ask a question or two. Or better yet, they will ask the guy behind them; "Could you please watch my spot while I go .......".
But TK who has been dealing with this for a long time should have fixed this problem. The numbered ticket system works great. If no room for business counter, they should put two ticket machines, one for economy one for business, and serve pax on that order. Very simple, or maybe they like chaos, I don't know.

Not really, but same reason Emirates operates 5 weekly A310 freighters to IST in addition to its daily 773 passenger flight.

These airlines can leverage their hubs to connect other markets (particularly Far East and India) with Turkey. Its not that there is massive amounts of trade between Turkey and places like Qatar at all.

hi friends,.

i am just back from a turkish holiday. i flew TK DXB-IST-DXB. The 738s were very cramped. I fel IST-DENIZILI on a very spacious 738!!! i dunno why the seat differences.

I also flew atlasjet from AYT-IST on tghe 757, that was my highlight of the month!!!

A great country, with amazing beauty both natural and man-made. Food to die for and people are the best.

Just one question. I was surprised to see 4 IL-86 take off from AYT on 5th morning. Are they all scheduled flights from Russia/adjoining countries or were they chartered flights for russian vacationers. I did see a lot of russian beauties in the waters off kekova.  Wink

cheers.

Hi I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in Turkey, it really is one of the most amazing countries to visit, the reason you had different seat arrangements is one problem that TK has which is inconsistent product. A/C ordered during different management times etc. Also the fact that TK flies the 738 to DXB shows you how bad they need widebodies namely more A330's to replace and modernize the mid-long haul product and fleet.

The amount of russian beauties in Antalya is truly amazing, to bring those vacationers russian charter companies are using the IL's. They are not scheduled flights.

Hi,

Just came back from a 14 day South Eastern Asia trip, going through many airports, flying on many airliners...

I could not help notice sth. and I want to ask for your opinions on the matter, though the topic it is not very relevant to Turkish Aviation forum, I hope you will excuse me...

Flying back from Singapore via Dubai on a SQ 777 we used the 06/24 rwy. to land at Ataturk. I had already noticed the very feathery landing at Dubai and in Istanbul, despite being on the short rwy., the beast did not even seem to deploy reversers and did not brake hard. I remember many landings with smaller aircraft on the same rwy. when I felt like we we were not going to be able to stop and ditch.

Any idea why is that? Is the approach speed for 777s lower than other aircraft allowing them to perform smoother landings or are their air brakes more efficient or is it because it is just a comfortable widebody?

Regards,

Arda

as the A310F conversation will be the 100th conversation for the company doing that job, will they offer TK a nice new paintsheme? Would be great to have the "Nostalji-livery" on that plane  cloudnine

The first 15 rows on TK's 738 have a 3-4 inches of extra room, because those rows are convertible (Y-C).

That could be the reason.

I just saw a picture of the A340 with the new seats. TK seems to have removed all the brown colors from the cabin and replaced it with navy blue. The actual seats are the same.

My flight from IST to ORD had a change of gate from 219 to 218. There were two 340s sitting next to each other. This worked out great which meant change from 'Adana' to 'Istanbul' the only 340 in the fleet with new IFE system. 11:40 hrs passed by much faster this way. .

Qatar Airways Cargo starting freighter service to IST.

Correct and EK is not happy with it. Performance is on good on QR's freighter (AB6) with an average of 35 tons per flights.

On a separate note QR is increasing pax frequencies from 3 to 5 effective Nov 1 ( IST DOH )
and another two frequencies are planned for 1 april 2008.

TK will take it from 3 to 4 ( IST DOH ) effective Nov 1.

Let's see how that turns out, but my money is on QR.

there is a report on airporthaber.com which says that IzAir is growing and so on. They talk about an aircraft order of 12 aircrafts in total.
Neither IzAir nor Pegasus stands in the order books of Boeing or Airbus. Did they order Regiojets from Brazil or Canada or did they order Russian jets Big grin ???

Stylo777,
I read that report few minutes ago and it is interesting as you said I can't see them in order list. Don't be surprised to see TU-134 in Izair livery  silly  .

In August I was told that all the flights were full for Malaysia Airlines until middle of September. I guess these flights are not profitable in winter time. May be next summer they will increase the frequency again.

full flights dont mean profitable! you can have no seat available on a flight, but make loss anyhow.

Couple of things I did not realize before;
-No alcholic bevies on TK domestic
-We landed on 36L while a TK320 took off 36R same time at IST
-TKs moist toilette flavor has changed to rosewater...sucks.
