NWA A319 At STL?

Sun Sep 09, 2007 2:04 am

I just booked a trip DTW-STL and back for the Thanksgiving weekend. The return trip is on a A319.I fly to STL from DTW about once a month or so and it always has been DC-9s and CRJs. I have seen a CRJ-900 at STL and the RJ-85s used to go there to. I have not seen a A319 in STL and this is the first time I have seen that aircraft offered on that route before. Is the A319 new to the STL route or is this something done just for the Holiday weekend?

it must be lucky as NW make the thanksgiving schedule and guess STL was lucky to get A319. You are correct that STL rarely get them only regional or DC9. Yes sometimes some cities get unpect big mainline during holiday so you should feel lucky to flying on it to STL.

It was my understanding that the reason behind only DC-9 mainline a/c was a gate space issue. If an Airbus is at one NW gate then the other gate can not be used. Also, the first gate, IIRC A-2 can not be used for an Airbus period. I am not sure which days specifically have the 319 scheduled, but if it is a day with a reduced schedule that could make some sense.

Yeah, Terminal A at STL is very small and not have big space for big NW airlines so they only use DC9 because of space at gates area. I guess the A319 come when no another NW aircraft would be there on that time and day so A319 will be able to park at whatever gate at that day easy.

The jetway at gate A3 is being replaced to serve Airbus aircraft on a permanent basis. Not sure when it is supposed to go into service though.

Does that mean that A-1 will be unusable when an A319/320 is occupying A-3? Do you think that they will be able to use A-1, 3, 5 at the same time?

I will admit that it has been a few years since I was in the A concourse, but where in the world did they find space to cram in an A1 gate? I flew Northwest out of St. Louis every four or five weeks for about three years and there was almost zero room to the right of A3 to put in another gate.

There is not a gate designated A-1 at Lambert, certainly not one with a jetway attached. First gate on the left out of security is A-3, and from what I understood in the past is that the Airbus could not park at this gate due to the limited wing tip clearance. Back in the 80's when NW would regularly fly the 727-200 into STL you would often see this aircraft parked at A-3 and that was very tight. And the A-319/320 has a larger wingspan than the 72S.

Never knew the jetway was an issue in accomodating the Airbus, is the jetway being re-located to make this happen??

I just noticed that NWA has been using A-10 for quite a while I have seen this 3 days in a row.

Is this permanent or a temp thing?

Good Question. I was talking with the gate agents last month when they had two planes at the gate and a third sitting waiting for one to leave. They told me they used to use Delta's gates in a "gentleman's agreement", but they no longer could do that. The Agent said they would like to get a third gate or at least one they could use from time to time if they needed it.

What airline regularly uses A-10? Is it US? If it is I have seen Airbus' there before.

When AA left the A concorse, NW was suppose to get a 3rd gate. However, after 9/11/01 all this was put on hold due to budget cut backs. In 2005 when their lease was up they were to negotiate for another gate, but the airport raised all of the fees because AA had cut back so much in STL.

NW needs a complete renovation in STL. There was talk of new electronic back boards, counters, seats and carpet but again that was put on hold as well. Not sure if any of this has happened since I've been on leave for a while and haven't been commuting. But, I remember torn seats and stained carpet all over the gate area.

No Airline is assigned A-10.

It was AA's former gates I believe.

That's right. IIRC, American had A-10, A-12, and A-14 prior to the merger. I remember leaving on an American F-100 going from STL to ORD from A-14 in May, 1999. I also recall picking up a friend of mine (back when you could go through security without a ticket) on an AA Super 80 in early Jan. 2001 (which I think would have been right before the move).

All I know is that the foundation for the old jetway was removed for a new jetway coming in. My sources tell me the primary reason for this was to put in a new jetway so NW could bring in Airbi on a regular basis.

Temp thing while the A3 construction goes on.

That should be part of the upcoming 100+ million dollar renovation.

I believe this is correct as every once in a while, I'll see an airline not normally using A10 utilize it for a diversion or the like. I assume this is handled by the airport.
