SQ SIN-SYD A380 Service Begins Oct 28th

Wed Sep 12, 2007 7:58 pm

SQ has announced that regular A380 service (not the ebay flights, but regular daily A380 service) will begin on Oct 28th from Singapore to Sydney. The flight will replace a current B744 aircraft on the route, and will operate flights SQ221, and SQ220 on the route. These flights depart SIN in the early evening, arriving into SYD the following morning, departing SYD in the morning and arrive back into SIN in the afternoon.

I look forward to more announcements like these next year once LHR goes live, as well as the other airlines who have his baby on order.

Great news.

They are bookable on their website and it's only EUR700 return.

I land in SYD on the 28th and will be staying near SYD, so might hop over to the airport to take a few pics that morning.

Wohoo, that day (assuming it's stuck to) is the real start of the A380s life as a comercial plane - finally and will also put paid to the belief that there's still something wrong with this bird - ie an issue with the certification.

Go SQ!

You might never see the captain and pilots on these flights as they have their own cabin with bunk beds inside the cockpit past the cockpit door.

This is one thing I found most interesting when I was given a private tour of the all equipped aircraft by pilot Guy Magrin.
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

It's arriving in SYD at 07:10, and departing at 08:50. A 1:40 turnaround. So much for the doom-and-gloom of "the A380 will take forever to embark and disembark and turn around etc."

Who in their right mind would ever want to sit in seats 83DG on the upper deck? A pair of seats surrounded by toilets on BOTH SIDES as well as a galley directly behind you! You would think that having the most spacious and flexible cabin on planet earth would permit an airline to avoid something as awful as this..... Come on Singapore, you can do better!

P.S. Where are the amenities of the "future"? Cafeterias? Baby-Sitting zones? Pubs? Casinos? Showers? Gyms? Duty-Free stores? Business centers? Lounges? Bars? Aroma-therapy suites? Jacuzzis? Massage stations? Beauty Parlors? Bowling Alleys?

From "airguideonline.com":

"It has to be a question of space," states Leahy. He argues that the gigantic new A380 aircraft that Airbus has begun building will offer passengers, for the first time, the sense of space as well as elegance of an ocean liner, rather than the cattle-car conditions of today's aircraft. In the company's litany, the A380, due to enter service within five years, will be a "cruise ship of the sky."

For First and Business class passengers, maybe. (Although on every cruise ship I've been on, they had a pool on board.) For the regular folks in "3rd" class, you're gonna get about the same cruise ship experience as on a DC-9.

Except aren't those wavy lines curtains, so the toilets are only accessable by walking down the outside aisles not the ones that pass DG - would make the seats quite desireable I think!

The 744 has that as well. Certain other widebodies too, depending on how they're configured by the airline, e.g. some of AA's T7s have bunks in the cockpit.

It should be A D F K instead. Seems to me the F and K seats are bigger, but I think they just drew it in a different way for clarity.

I don't think those are "outside aisles" but rather, a ledge along the wall of the cabin. If it were an aisle, then the same would apply along the entire length of the Business cabin, and I don't think that's the case. In addition, you are going to get all 88 passengers on the upper deck walking past your seat on the way to the rear staircase to "go take a look downstairs to stretch out my legs", as well as many of the 311 passengers on the main deck coming up "just to take a look upstairs", assuming they all have access to the rear staircase.

Anyone notice that they are using R/J/Y on the seat map.

I thought R was reserved for Supersonic. So in addition to normal First (F) and Premium First (P) we have Suite First (R). How is it loaded in Systems? Is the R fare higher than F or P on other SQ flights?

R Class on A380 @ A$9,836.70, incl tax

A price difference of 81%!!!!

It seems that SQ First Class on the A380 is now officially called "Suites".
The cost of traveling on the 380 SQ "Suites", return to Sydney, is about 45% more than normal (in SGDollars)SQ First Class!

I'm SO excited! The availability shows the flight in Sabre but I can't display the seat map. Thanks QF175 for the link. I see the economy section on the upper deck has a different configuration to the lower deck. Wouldn't mind flying back there in the upper deck. Congratulations to SQ and AIRBUS!!

It's the same seat, just in a different "position".

For Business Class, seats A, D are shown in the "seat" position while H, K are shown in the "bed" position.

Same for 1F for the First Class Suites. It's shown in the "bed" position, while the other seats are in the "seat" position.

This will be the publised rate - no doubt the consol/nett fares will be much more inline with other SQ services - I recall EK doing the same when they introduced the A345 fleet - the Suites on EK flights had a higer fare compared to travelling on the 773/W once the aircraft had been in operation for a period of time the fares become the same on the A345 as they are on a 77w... with a few exceptions on very very good promotional fares they tend to flight number restrict - normally excluding the A345 service.

I think it was always going to be the case that the A380 F class would attract a higher premium.

Give it time - they will soon be standard across the SQ fleet.

So what is the purpose of the staircase across from door 3R? Or is that something else. I would think the wing box and fuel tanks would preclude any lower level use in that area. Or is it not a staircase?

Access to crew rest area... or maybe a lower gally...??

I would go with the first - crew rest area... I really can't see it being anything else - I'm surprised to not see any lounge area for first class passengers - unless I'm missing something.

& as what appears to be stairs in the middle of economy I really don't see it being access for a passenger loung etc - can you imagine 300+ trying to fit in that space!

I thought SQ would have used this oportunity to introduce a new Y+ cabin same as on the A345... especially as QF have just announced that they will...

Also.... do you see boarding done in the following....

F rows 1 -5 & upper deck J rows 11 - 15 using door 1 (J class access via stairs)

Main deck Economy using door 2

& upper deck J rows 17 - 27 & Y rows 71 - 83 using door 2 on the upper deck ?

471 seats including 399 Y seats. Only 72 premium seats. Premium ratio 15.3%. Compared to the nominal capacity of 555 seats, that's a density of 84.8%.

On the 77W, it's 228 Y seats, 50 premium seats, for a ratio of 18%. That's a 75.6% density vs. 365 using the new product (though not the suite product, just the super sized F beds).

On the 744, there's 12/50/314 for 62 premium seats (some configs have fewer Y, one config has fewer J), and a ratio of 16.5%. That's a 90% density vs. 416 using the old product, but the new product would not fit nearly as well...

I configured a theoretical 748 using the A380 product, and can fit 12/50/314 in that as well. That's a density of 80.5% versus nominal capacity of 467 (but of course with narrower Y seats).

So for SQ, the A380 has a better nominal density than other planes with their new product, but the 748i would have a better density than the 77W they fly. The 748i would also offer SQ a "375 seat" capacity between the "275" on the 77W and the "475" on the A380. But SQ says there's no place in their fleet for the 748i.

The A380 also has more Y seats than total seats on any of the 744s, but has a low premium density and only 10 more J seats than the 744 and 77W, which shows that not even SQ can invent premium traffic on a route with a larger plane, even with this new superior product.
Of all the things to worry about... the Wookie has no pants.

Which is exactly why they bought the A380. The premium market is stagnant and sturated, while the leisure market keeps growing, especially in Asia. They need a plane that can carry as many paople as possible for the lowest possible cost in order to compete with the LCCs.

7 hours ground time in SIN? Would have thought they would have done a rotation up to KUL - 3 hours return block time? This would help build up crew hours too, ground handling experience, etc.

The premium market is stagnant and sturated, while the leisure market keeps growing, especially in Asia. They need a plane that can carry as many paople as possible for the lowest possible cost in order to compete with the LCCs.

They're certainly not carrying as many people as possible on the A380. The 471 seat configuration is lower-density than all 3 A380 configurations announced by EK -- 489 and 514 seats in 3 classes depending on the route, and 644 seats in 2 classes on certain routes within the Middle East and to/from India etc.

For First and Business class passengers, maybe. (Although on every cruise ship I've been on, they had a pool on board.) For the regular folks in "3rd" class, you're gonna get about the same cruise ship experience as on a DC-9

You have obviously never flown on an A380.
Otherwise you would not write such nonsense.

What is the difference in cost between the same route run on the 77W and on the 744. I was under the impression they charged a premium on the 77W routes as well. Obviously, we can't compare the A380 to the 77W directly with this one route, but we can use an SAT style math analogy.

Just a couple of observations regarding the SQ A380 seat map:

1) There's no dedicated galley for the upper deck ECY cabin. Does this mean the meals and drinks will be "lifted" up from the main deck? Or will they come from the JCY cabin's galley?

2) Seems to have an "excessive" number of toilets in the middle of the main deck - 5 of them in the one area.

Yes, but SQ's standards are a little above everyone else's, even EK's. So let me rephrase it: They need a plane that can carry as many paople as possible within SQ's standards of service, for the lowest possible cost in order to compete with other carriers in the low yield market.

That's because SQ's new J product is one of the most generous/space wasting flying. Most three class carriers are doing 2/3/2 or 2/4/2 on J on planes that offer F suites. Carriers with no F are doing 2/2/2 or 1/2/1 but even then, both of those are holding more per square foot.

Only time will tell if SQ's new "generous J" cabin will be worth it to them.

Very likely. There's a lift by the rear stairs.

There's also a stair in the middle of the main deck heading down to the wingbox. I wonder what they plan on putting down there (since the A388 doesn't use that space for fuel tanks, as that was left for the A388R and A389.

A.netter Norcal773 has flown SFO-ICN-SIN on the B773ER in J-Class a few times and has told me they initially had a price premium but that he has been lately able to get fares for the same amount as before they were flying the B773ER...

Great news! Hopefully it won't be long before I catch one in service here in the U.S. (or better yet, in Australia should I finally make a trip there).
Picked a hell of a week to quit sniffing glue.
