AA/UA ORD-ORF

Thu Sep 20, 2007 12:03 pm

I noticed that American Eagle looks to be axing service from ORD to ORF. UA seems to have decent capacity on the route, and WN has added flights recently. Have the loads been that pathetic on Eagle?

Probably more of a yield issue than a load issue with the increased Southwest competition.

Looks like I'll be taking UA then out of DSM/CID to ORD and then on to ORF to visit the Outer Banks next year, or for the right price, OMA-MDW-ORF.

You are probably right, I just found it curious that UA has 6 daily N/S. All on EMB170/CRJ700, so 70 seats a pop. It seems like this route should be a slam dunk with Great Lakes Naval facility in Chicago and the largest Naval base in Norfolk. Looks like this may be an example of UA simply driving AA right out of a market.

I am actually surprised that no airline has put a direct or thru flight on ORF to SAN with it being the largest route for military traffic....
The opinions I post are of mine and mine alone, not of the airline I work for.

Yeah, seems like it would be ripe for SWA, or even US Airways...

Well SWA could do it through LAS or MDW cause BWI would be a transcon and they don't do those anymore....US Airways would through PHL or CLT but would have to change one of the 737's to an airbus 319 or 320 to make it work for the range...

Ironically, AA is the carrier who has the federal contract for the ORF-SAN route.

Carrier/Market American Airlines SAN/ORF YCA - $309.00 XCA - $150.00 BCA - $0.00

That would explain the MD80 serving the ORF-DFW route...

They likely also need the lift for all the heavy bags that come along with moving servicemen/women around.

AA serves a lot of southeast markets with mainline from DFW but MQ (or AX or OW) from the other hubs. RIC and CLT are two other examples of this.
