I'm not familiar with Portuguese, only Spanish, but from my understanding of the text, it does indeed seem that TAAG are going to be taking a third 777-200ER, so long as the financing is approved. Interesting though that it says they will use it on their European routes, but also to the American continent once authorisation is given - I'm presuming that means ETOPS as they currently fly the 743 transatlantic. Also there is mention of potential expansion to Dubai and China.

Yeah that has been the topic of some debate for almost 2 years now amongst Houston area spotters. Frankly I have my doubts. Didn't the EU recently ban DT's European operations. I wonder if the FAA might follow the EU's lead on this?

Correct. Currently SAA flies for TAAG to LIS; this is foreseen to be switched to EuroAtlantic (see thread mentioned in reply #2)

Not yet Cyba, they need to be certified on ETOPS first.

TAAG needs to take that 3rd B777 as their B743's are banned from the EU.

Will this one be bought to lease out???? or operate. I dont understand why TAAG cannot get rights to Europe with such a modern aircraft like the 777, anyone would think the EU thought they were flying old 720s on their euro routes

I don't think it's an issue about how new the aircraft are, more how well they are maintained and how well trained the crews are.

Ah, so it's already ordered - the article seems to suggest that it wasn't and that the deal could only go ahead anyway if financing was obtained - I presume the loss of European rights has really hit them hard. Then again, we all know just how reliable the press is!

Yeah, the serial number is the next one in sequence from their 1st and 2nd 777s, so that strongly suggests that it was ordered at the same time as their first two !

Indeed - so perhaps they actually are looking for a fourth aircraft then and the news source has been confused by the fact that they only physically have two aircraft of that type.

I think there exists a certain prejudice in Europe against TAAG. How come an airline operating factory new, state of the art 777s are banned from even serving their mother country? Surely unless the ban is lifted, TAAG will have no need for additional long haul aircraft.
Perhaps Angola could take some action to stop European airlines making huge profits on their routes to Luanda, until they have reciprocal rights!

I think they already do - landing rights at Luanda are like gold dust with Europeans airlines scrabbling for, and usually not getting any new frequencies. It was though a surprise to me that they were blacklisted - I didn't think they were bad.

I dont think Boeing think they are. A repeat customer for the state of the art 777 and they arent even allowed to fly to lisboa. Bloody Brussels. If I were Angola, i wouldnt let a European carrier in at all, withdraw their permits until the TAAG situation is reviewed. Are TAAG activley trying to appeal against the ban? I think they have grounds, operating newer aircraft than BA or TAP.

Do we know what their safety standards are like? Pretty sure one of their 737s came a cropper on the day the EU list with them mentioned was published. Those are the grounds on which one presumes they have been banned or are you suggesting that some dodgy outfits on the blacklist grab themselves 738s/739s/777s/A330s/A340 and then get "unbanned" as they have modern fleet, regardless of how "good" they are in their operating procedures.

Aircraft do not fly by themselves nor do they maintain themselves no matter how new they are. These two functions take skilled, educated and experienced staff. TAAG must simply fall short of these requirements as a company.
How come Iran Air is still allowed to fly their old equipment to Europe? Because they have proven beyond the doubt that their maintenance is adequate and actually very good by all standards. TAAG needs to do the same.
Go the extra mile......and avoid the traffic!!!

I think TAAG need to be proactive in their attempts to get the ban lifted. They also rightly need to protect their Luanda hub from money hungry European carriers who are making huge profits out of Luanda at the expense of the national carrier.
I wish TAAG the best of luck. their fleet renewal and investment clearly demonstrates how serious they are about modernisation and effficiency. Also TAAG must provide good employment opportunities on the ground and in the air to relative poor nationals of that country. That is a very good thing.

Ah, yes the Chinese-constructed railroad system in Angola is 75% done and they are financing a plethora of other things in Africa; they just approved a $5,000,000,000 loan to DRC and are building one of the largest dams in Africa

The Boeing orders&deliveries db notes only two 777-200ERs (both now delivered) ordered by TAAG on 20-July-2005.
But there is an unidentified order that was placed on 27-Oct-2006 for a single -200ER (with GE power) ...

Why is TAAG flying 747 on LUN-JNB route? Why don't they use 737. I think 747 is too large for such a ''short'' flight, even SAA flies the same route.
