Yes, AeroMexico's last flight out of Ciudad de Guatemala is on the 20th of October. They were losing heavily on the route, nobody cared to fly AM when they have Mexicana & TACA flying nonstop.

San Pedro Sula and Managua are still being flown, despite the fact that these two routes are not reporting great LFs either. AM thinks they can make it work, perhaps they'll be sending AeroMexico Connect instead in the near future.

Is anyone here familiar with a waypoint (in Costa Rica) named RIOBA? If so, what are its exact coordinates?

Actually I'm also having a hard time identifying these: DADES (alternately shown in ACARS messages as ABDADE), HONDA (also ABHOND), SASAY (also ABSASA), and TEREL (also ABTERE), among others.

RIOBA is located exactly at coordinates: N 10° 06' 40.7" W 84° 30' 23.1" and 17.66 DME (Nautical Miles) and on the 294 degree radial from TIO VOR.

Just as a note, on ACARS messages, AB means Abeam, so DADES and ABDADE is Abeam DADES just that the ACARS does not produce the position report with the full intersection name.

RIOBA: N 10° 06' 40.7" W 84° 30' 23.1" and 17.66 DME, Radial 294 from TIO VOR.
DADES: N 10° 07' 59.0" W 84° 33' 10.9" and 20.73 DME, Radial 294 from TIO VOR.

These three conform the RAMON 2 SID (Standard Instrument Departure), DADES Transition. DADES Transition takes you up to LIB VOR to joing the UG440 airway, used commonly for flights to El Salvador and Guatemala, among others.

SASAY: N 10° 23' 57.1" W 84° 08' 22.2" and 25.39 DME, Radial 012 from TIO VOR.
TEREL: N 09° 44' 15.3" W 84° 16' 48.5" and 15 DME, Radial 189 from TIO VOR.

You are probably getting confused because these are new waypoints that went into validity on the 30th of August 2007, I have a copy of all the new charts in PDF, email me and I can send them to you.

CM can't get the numbers right for a possible DAV-MIA flight. All the news about that flight is pure speculation and comes mainly from people in DAV and inside Panama Civil Aviation Authority. At this point in time DAV-MIA will be a prestige unprofitable route.

Chiriquí Province is undergoing a real-state and tourist boom, yet the traffic CM could get in DAV to/from MIA is very, very limited. And why someone with SkyTeam miles would want to fly between DAV and the States/Canada/Europe via MIA?
It would make more sense for CM to fly DAV-IAH or DAV-ATL and give all those DAV passengers awesome connections or as I've stated before, include DAV as a daily stop enroute to/fr a Centralamerican destiantion (SJO, MGA or GUA) given DAV passengers the choice to connect with CO/DL/CM at those airports and in PTY - instead of flying a prestige risky DAV-MIA.

TACA is getting a A320 simulator for SAL. I guess they want to keep training in house. Wonder if they are learning from CM's woes..

CM trains in house, they have a 737 sim in Ciudad del Saber and will recieve an E190 sim next year

On October 14th a huge of diversions due to horrible weather in SJO meant more than 1000 stranded passengers for the next day. Operations from/to EWR, SAP, PTY, CCS, MIA, LAX, IAH and MAD among others were delayed up to ten hours. Some sport delegations returning home were either diverted or stopped in their original destinations.
This situation is quite often during rainy season in Costa Rica and local authorities does not enhance the level of service of the ILS approaching systems placed at runway 07.

Sometimes I wish SJO would get full CAT IIIb or CAT IIIc capability to at least allow incoming aircraft to land without having them divert to LIR or even further way to PTY or MGA. But it ain't gonna happen (just as much as an ILS on RW25, to improve current runway operations, won't happen either), and given that this year was foggier than ever at SJO, the problem will only become worse. The interesting part is that, according to the charts, RW07 has a CAT I ILS/DME, it's not even a CAT II ILS.

Richie, along those same lines I wonder if the Asociación de Líneas Aéreas -or anyone else for that matter- has ever figured out how much the corresponding financial losses (to the airlines alone) amount to at the end of every rainy season.

Good news for TACA - looks that they are in expansion mode.

Now - i don't know if this is part of bad journalism (which would not be unheard off in Central America).. But look at this qoute:

I am glad we can agree on something. All my Embraer experiences have been sub-par.

The A318, could work i guess.. but as i understand it - it would be best suited for medium length and thin routes.

I dont think there is any CAT IIIc system operational in the world and I am not sure if there is even that many CAT IIIb systems, the problem with this system is that it allows the plane to land but then it cant go anywhere, cant taxi, so it is really pointless untill we have a good ground radar that can track aircraft all the way to the gate.

You have a point there. Although ATL, JFK, LAX, ORD, and SFO (the list is only partial) all have catIII ILS approaches certified for catIIIc ops, none approve landings in zero RvR conditions.

I was thinking about that too, but I forgot about the ground radar. I also doubt there will ever be a ground radar, especially since space is so tight at SJO, other aircraft may accidentally interfere with the ground radar.

It seems that all the whining from me and my fellow chapines regarding the ridiculously high taxes on tickets will soon come to an end... the Corte de Constitucionalidad has declared the 10% tourism tax unconstitutional, therefore any person who buys a ticket will only have to pay 12% value added tax (IVA).

Well, I believe they were just going through the motions. A mix of public relations with a bit of old pressure tactics thrown in.

It's probably fair to say that the Arias administration doesn't want to be bogged down with day-to-day airport operations for who knows how long until they can toss that distraction on to a new, suitable contractor.

The administrative complexity this would invariably entail is certainly something to keep in mind, not to mention the barrage of lawsuits that would follow.

Anyway, recent developments suggest a compromise toward a workable way out of this mess is in the making, and that the Alterra feud will be ultimately sorted out in the country's best interest.

As posted out before, AM dropped GUA from their schedules to Central America.
GUA is getting other choices on GUA-MEX, GUA-SAP and GUA-MGA and given by other air carriers.
Nonetheless, SAP-MEX and MGA-MEX have apparently worked out right on AM due likely to lack of competitors supplying nonstops in such tracks. These frequencies are being upgraded as shown below.
CM flew PTY-SAP-MEX prior to start its business relationship with CO, hence AM did not certainly discover an untapped market on SAP-MEX.

I reckon that Arias does have other things to do, though he shouldn't forget about this problem if he's really interested in boosting the tourist industry and business by getting more transatlantic or even transpacific service to Costa Rica. That being said, I also blame the Pacheco administration for not acting when it was warranted. This problem could have been sorted out years ago if Pacheco had the political will to tell CETAC and Contraloría to get their act together and tell them to either kick Alterra out, or go to arbitration.

This is a problem that I've denounced over and over again. This country has too much bureaucracy involved, and this is one of the things that also contributed to the problem and in general is keeping a stranglehold on processes in this country.

By the way I just flew on NK from GUA to LAX IMHO not worth it at all and I wouldn't recommend the carrier.

Would you care to elaborate? Is it because the only thing they provide free of charge on board is drinking water? I wouldn't compare it to the blue carpet treatment on both CO and CM plus the complimentary Y to F upgrades they pamper me with, but I've also flown NK a couple of times to South Florida. They delivered on-time performance for a true bargain fare, not once but twice. And their no-frills service didn't bother me one bit.

They don't anymore, water costs $2.00, but the one thing that made me a little angry is the fact that they have gone cashless. Okay I understand that that is good, but here is the thing; more than 50% of the people that fly this route don't have a credit card or a debit card, so I had to see how people were going 5 hrs on a flight with not even the possibility of a drink (I'm sure all of us here know what a/c does to you). So again cashless is good, but only on certain routes.

If you are wondering I did invite my row-mates to the basic element of WATER!!!! Before anyone says anything, people were bringing water bottles with them, but the Wackenhutpeople confiscated them before boarding (allegedly you can't bring liquids on board now).

I will definitly complain this before DIACO (even though they can't do anything Angry

I'll tell you how the return trip goes on Tuesday (and how many people I invited to a bottle of water on the plane)

I forgot to mention, non of the 3 flight attendants knew how to speak Spanish, there fore the safety instructions in the o/d language were omitted and also 4 passengers (including my self) had to translate for them. Oh and lets just say that non of them were even familiar with the US customs and immigration forms at all. Again I'll let you know on Tuesday how the return flight goes.

This schedule allows traffic from the rest of the affordable stations on TA network through LIM.
Interestingly, TA deploys the 320 over the 319.
Adverts about low introducing fares were displayed in Uruguay in order to load the planes.
MVD is not linked directly to BOG, UIO, GYE and CCS. TA enables connections to get them (among others) through LIM hub that is geographically well positioned in South America.
TA 041 and TA 040 are shown as SAL-LIM-MVD and MVD-LIM-SAL, but not necessarily in the same aircraft. In fact, TA 040 will switch to 321 on LIM-SAL next Monday.
Related to the last development in LIM, Alterra was also involved into a entity who is known in Peru as LAP: Lima Airport Partners.
