Ladies and Gents
Im at LHR waiting for BA099 to YYZ. So far we have had TWO airraft changes due to unserviceable aircraft and 767 number 3 has just arrived for us to try and start our flight across the pond 3 hours late.
Is this common?
Do BA normally have two 767s 'spare' at LHR?
(I was hoping out third attempt would be a 777!!! but alas no a 767 has arrived at gate 23 Sad)

Well, BA's 763's are used for short range and also long haul in BA's fleet. They have the types configured with such, and the majority of them were delivered in the late 90's.

Having spares, might be related a/c availability I believe. But there are BA gurus. here. They will tell you

Not going to happen as they are not currently ETOPS authorised.

This morning BA had one spare long haul B763 at LHR, but during today 9 of the 14 aircraft arrived at LHR. So to find your second aircraft they steal one from a later service and reduced the ground time. They can also postpone a maintenance visit to produce an aircraft.

Back in 2004 I was going to Nairobi on BA's overnight flight (which then I think was operated 3 weekly with a 763). Anyway, the first aircraft had a fuel leak, or fuel supply problem. An spare aircraft was towed across to terminal 4 which also had a minor problem. That was fixed, and in the end we lefdt about 2 hrs late.

I don't suppose there are reliabilty issues with BA's 763s (with the exception of the infamous G-TECH!). I guess it is just sod's law that if they break down they all do it at the same time.

I've had numerous flights on BA 763's, all but one flight with Euro config planes, never had any delays at all, sounds like bad luck.
