Airlines With Outside Camera Views?

Sat Oct 06, 2007 12:23 am

My family just finished an SAS A340 and A330 trip to and from Denmark. Most seats had a video screen on the seat in front of them (as shown in Airliners.net photos). What I really loved was the passenger choice to watch outside cameras for most of the journey, either a straight down view or a forward view. I watched clouds floating by and saw great views of terrain as we crossed over. The forward view landing was my favorite. I even 'helped' the captain land with my air yoke. Fantastic! Sorry if is old news to some of you airliner vets, but I'm real curious as to how many airlines offer this kind of pilot-like viewing. Thanks!
Bigger planes & bigger windows? Thanks, but I'd rather you fly me faster!

CX's 777-300 have outside camera's. The flight from BKK to HKG had it turned on during takeoff and landing. Not sure what other A/C's of theirs have camera's. I know the CX 747-400's don't. I don't remember the A330's having them but then I was flying out of TPE on that A/C type. From what I understand, CX turns the outside camera off while the flight is within Taiwanese airspace.
I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

LX has it on their A340's.

AY on all Airbus aircrafts.

I think AF has it too but I am not 100% sure.  Smile

yes they have on their A332 and B77W. But it's not very often that the system is switched on (apparently some people are "scared". I know it sounds ridiculous but it's true)

Swiss has it on some of their A320s. Flew ZRH-FCO and had a nice view of takeoff and landing. It was cool when the gear goes up the camera points down and when the gear is down the camera is pointing with the gear so you can see where you are taxing etc..
I did not get the camera on the FCO-ZRH leg which was also on an A320 though, so I guess only a few of them have the camera.
I loved flying Swiss, great airline service was decent and food was good etc.. And connecting in ZRH is very easy. Only if the leg room was a little bit better.  Smile

Not on the EC-INO I flew in 2006 MAD-GRU.
They don't even had PTV.

Serial number 431
Type 340-642
First flight date 07/06/2003

But they got a dozen A346 later, maybe on those planes.

Etihad A330s and A340s have nose and belly cameras.
As much of their flying from here is done in darkness, the benefit is limited.

China Airlines does on their A330-300s and the newer B747-400s.

I was on one of the 747-400s from DPS to TPE and you could switc camera views on the AVOD system. There was one looking forward and one looking down.

Not consistently. I flew HKG-TPE just a few weeks ago and the camera was on for the entire flight, including take-off and landing. Had an A330 on the way back through, so no more camera fun.

OS has them on their 772s. Also on their widebody airbus fleet, though I think they only have one of those left.

I know that OS A332 used to have one. I flew with them back in 99 or 00 and they had the cameras.

If I saw that view on landing I think I'd be sick.  ill

Saudi Arabian Airlines have forward and downview available on their 777's. They always have their forward view on for landing but not always for take-off. They are switched off once in flight. Don't know why.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I saw it on EK once...but they always have it off for take off and landing which happen to be the most interesting parts of the flights. As per cruise level...I believe the window has a better coverage than the camera.

I can confirm that at least AF A332's and LX343's have that because I used them...now if OS A332's had that, then TP ex: OS A332's have them too!

I appreciate all the input. It's nice to know there are several airlines with camera views for passengers. I know that on my future trips to Denmark I will certainly lean towards SK because of them. Those outside views kept me entertained for hours. I hope more airlines add them. Looks like the A380 has them available for airlines that want them.

Yeah, the houses that came after the airport! Classic. Your house would show on 10 pixels for 1 second though, don't see a problem. And the same morons would better not browse Google Earth or they will be shocked!

This, I believe, is the key to make future BWB and Hypersonic aircraft pallatable to passengers, particularly those who like window seats. I'd LOVE to experience it now! More people become accustomed to it, and less transition to unusual passenger cabins.

Then again, with no windows to verify, who'd know that the crew are not showing a pre-recorded video of the terrain underneath??

An earlier post said that JAL's 744s and 763s have it...

So do their 777s and most likely on other birds in their fleet. It seems to be a part of the JAL experience (or at least on domestic runs...I just flew JAL domestic two days ago) to offer the departure and landing view.

I am proud to say all of the above videos are mine  Smile And the camera feature is very cool, though for most of the time during out flights, the camera was half covered with ice! Which melted off once we were on our descent.

Correct, I've done my flightmemory now, it was the same 346 (HS-TMB) both ways.

Landscape camera was definitely shown as an option on the AVOD, maybe they use the same user interface but only the 345s have the camera operational. That's a shame.  Sad
