CO To JNB

Sun Oct 07, 2007 6:13 am

Hello All

I just read in a local paper that they are advertising Flights from JNB to the US on CO. Are they going to start flights to JNB or is it a codeshare with other skyteam members.

Any info would help

Thank you

Chris

IINM, CO and DL do not codeshare intercontinentally with each other.

DL codeshares with AF (JNB-CDG-JNB), while NW codeshares with KL (JNB-AMS-JNB and CPT-AMS-CPT)

The only intercontinental codeshare between CO and DL that I am aware of is ATL-SCL since CO doesn't fly its own metal to Chile.

.......

IAH-JNB - 7,841 nm
EWR-JNB - 6,943 nm

From EWR it's roughly as far as the HKG flight needs to fly.... almost like one of their top-of-the-line 777-200ER's could do it without the stop in Dakar.

I'd be kind of surprised to see this, myself. Especially with DL, apparently, starting JFK-DKR-CPT with a 767-300ER.

IAH had South African service in the 80s but Apartheid killed it and it would be nice, but I don't see it anytime soon. I would expect LOS before South Africa.

They could get there easily nonstop... not a chance at coming back though, unless they tag on CPT and take relatively harsh payload restrictions on top of that.

Technically, it was the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act that killed it. Apartheid was in place when the route went into service. It was once a week JNB-SID-IAH (SA211/212 IIRC) operated by a 747SP. I don't think it made money and it may even have been withdrawn before sanctions kicked in.

True.
AF deploys two daily flights on CDG-JNB.
AZ is integrated in the interline agreement as well, but DL is participating solely in one of these flights.

I guess some payload restrictions may apply or CO's 777s are capable to do IAH-JNB as nonstop and considering MTOW?
Will it be rather a route for CO's 787s in the future?
Regards.

On my last flight form IAH to AMS, I was sat next to a south african on his way back there. He said he worked literally offshore in the gulf. Are there many that do this? If so, it could be a slight insentive to start the route.

Nope.

It'd be a stretch even for them. They might be able to hack it outta EWR, but that'd still be cutting it close considering JNB's altitude.

You'd really would need the 772LR for a route such as this into Houston, and even it wouldn't be able to do so with a full load.

Plenty of carriers offer interline through-fares. Says nothing as to any intentions to offer service.
