NTSB Officials Investigate Rough Landing At ORD

I have only experienced this kind of landing once. It was on an Eastern DC-9 landing at ATL if I remember correctly. In fact I think it was during the brief "New Eastern" period. I have often wondered how many of these unfortunate experiences an aircraft can take. Do any of you have any additional info regarding this specific United flight?

At first, I thought it was unusual that the NTSB was investigating this (rather than just an FAA investigation). I think "Subtantial Damage" falls in the realm of NSTB 830... Any word from anyone in the know what the damage was precisely?

Damn, sounds pretty major. It's gonna be on the local news here in an hour...

The pictures on the news were amazing!!!! the engine looked like the AirTransat L1011 that flew through hail years ago.

Looked like damage to the bottom, like a runway-taxiway light.

Those FAA incident reports are filled with errors quite often. Wrong aircraft type, wrong airline, wrong registration, wrong airport, etc.

Secondly such incidents are pretty common - though it has been a relatively quite past two weeks (the live data on the FAA web site)

10/3 - Mexiana A320 hit by a deck loader in LA
9/30 - Comair5292 - CRJ - left wingtip struck the rear view mirror of a fuel truck while taxi to gate - BOS
9/28 - Falcon 50 at TEB - while taxi left wingtip struck and airport steam roller

The more exciting ones were:
10/8 - FLG2997 CRJ two bird strikes on approach at XNA minor damage
9/29 - Aloha B732 blew a main gear tire on departure - rtn to HNL
9/29 - ATA B737 bird strike on departure collapsed windshield with minor injures to one cockpit crew - rtn to PHL
9/27 - DAL B757 discovered after landing main tire blown with "unknown damage" to wing.

Yes I think you do have to register to hear the file, its free and is an excellent website. The file will appear once you login.

They do if the HARD landing results in SUBSTANTIAL damage, this is a notification item in NTSB 830 Wink

Yes, if the NTSB believes it is a safety of flight issue, it will be investigated. You are only required to report the accident or incident if it falls under Part830, but every morning when I interned at the NTSB we got a fax from the FAA that would list almost any deviation that happened the previous day (altitude, airspace bust, aircraft damage, etc) and we would call and investigate if we believed that it involved a safety of flight issue.

Last summer, I assisted in the (very limited) investigation of severe altitude deviations by commercial airliners, the 777/MD-80 collision at ORD, and some other airline related stuff, along with actual accident investigation.

Sounds like the original topic situation of a UA flight landing at ORD would qualify for being a 'substantial' incident requiring the NTSB to investigate. A tire blew out, the aircraft went off the runway, damaging the engine cowlings and possibly the landing gear. It will be unflyable for now, will be out of service for at least several days and a number of parts may have to be replaced. There could be further and serious damage to the engines and landing gear that could put the a/c out for at least a week or more. One thing in favor of this a/c was that this incident occurred at a major airport and one that is a hub for UA, so I suspect they have the mx staff and facilities to do much of the work there. Of course, they could just do a temp patch job at ORD and do a deadhead flight to UA's main mx facilities.
