The Airport In Kissimmee Florida

Thu Oct 11, 2007 3:49 pm

Anyone that lives here in orlando florida knows about the little business airport in kissimmee. Now I heard something about that airport along time ago. They might turn into a regional airport to take some traffic away from MCO I dont know how true this is, but they found out it can handle 737s and smaller aircraft, kinda like newport news, va. Anyone heard of this before?

Wasn't that the purpose of Orlando-Sanford (SFB)?

MCO is nowhere NEAR capacity, therefore the rumor is complete hogwash. End of story.

I don't really get this comparison. 6000ft at ISM vs. 8000ft runway at PHF. Quite a difference in aircraft capability.

from what I heard from the orlando sentinal , the orlando regional airport " located on apopka " was the one that would be rebuilt as a big regional airport , and able to handle big planes .

I think they launch some 'blimps' from here...remember seeing some on the 3/4 times I played golf on the course next door. Decent track incidentally - watch out for the gators!

There were some pretty cool aircraft at kissimmee when I was there May 06. Old Shorts 360s a DC3 and a DC9-15.

Don't tell Skybus about Kissimmee... chances are that they'll serve it from CMH!  Big grin Hey, if it can handle a 737, it can surely handle an A319.

I assume your talking about Kissimmee Gateway airport (ISM / KISM).

The airport is fairly busy with GA traffic with two main FBOs on site, Marathon (which I believe has been purchased by signature) and Attractions Jet Centre. I have seen a Boeing 733 depart the airport before but nothing larger than that. The longest runway is 6000ft long and has an ILS installed on runway 15.

The issue the airport has is, firstly how close it is to MCO, which is nowhere near maximum capacity and also Orlando Executive, which is much closer to downtown Orlando. Ramp space is also an issue at the airport, on weekends it is often hard to find space to park aircraft up.

While MCO may be closer to downtown, ISM is definitely closer to Disney, which is a big draw for a lot of the discount carriers. I am not sure they need an extra airport, but I could definitely see pressure both from the airlines as well as from the city of Kissimmee who would like to get a little of that market.

Would make for good views of arriving traffic.

When there a year or so ago we were lost (why are American roads to easy to get lost on?), we were on the 192 near the airport. THe Cessna's in the pattern certainly made me realise how close the runway is to the road. If more airliners start arriving I would imagine it would be a good spot for spotters.
Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either!

If you want to take pictures of airlines at ISM, watch FlightAware - a DC9-15 frequents there. Otherwise, it will never happen. You'll see Skybus or the next Wal-Mart Air at ORL before you see them at ISM - and even then, they'd probably serve MCO anyway.
