Do Security Check Points Stay Open 24hrs?

Fri Oct 12, 2007 3:47 am

I am asking because I have a flight tonight on jetBlue going Phoenix-New York. The flight from JFK-PHX is late by almost 3 hours and I don't want to get to the airport too early and have to wait in terminal 3 for longer than I have to.

Does Sky Harbor security stay open 24 hours? I want to get to the airport around 12-1am, the flight is estimated to leave right now around 2am. I am tracking the flight to make sure there isn't any surprises.

I can't think of a single checkpoint that stays open 24 hours. That said, most of my late-night trips to airports occur on the east coast, and by virtue of our location, we don't have many departures between 10 PM and 6 AM or so.

Check Point 3 in MSP is open 24 hours I believe. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Not sure about PHX.

I would expect any airport with significant operations starting in the early morning and extending into the late evening likely does have at least one 24-hour checkpoint for passengers. I am sure they all have at least one 24-hour checkpoint for staff.

It should stay open until the last flight of the night departs. If they closed then, there would be several last minute travelers left behind just because the security line is shut down. I know T2 at PHX is open really late because there is a CO flight at about 1am.

I know of several airports which close all checkpoints (some of them, such as CLT, are large hubs).

Only airport I can think of with a 24 hour checkpoint is the main one in ATL.

Good way to check times is the TSA website - http://waittime.tsa.dhs.gov/index.html

as for MSP...................when I used to be there, we did have one that was open 24 hours.

Many of LAS's checkpoints are open 24 hours.

At PHL, almost all of the checkpoints close down starting between 8pm and when the last flight goes out. Usually all checkpoints except one is closed down by 10:30pm. During IROPS, they may stay open later. They reopen between 4:30 and 5am depending on the terminal. The C checkpoint stays open 24 hours, although only employees are allowed in after 10:30pm.

In San Diego, the checkpoints are closed after the last flights of the night are boarding. They are officially closed completely after 11:30 PM, but the secured areas are patrolled until after the last flight of the night arrives, a VERY late night arrival from LAS on US.

Interestingly, it used to be that the terminals at SAN didn't open until 5 AM, but considering the crush of early morning departures and new security rules, they are opened MUCH earlier - probably in the neighborhood of 4 AM. When I flew DL SAN-SLC in late June, I arrived at the airport between 4:30 AM and 4:45 AM, expecting to have to wait. Instead, I found T2 already open, DL checking in customers, and security already letting pax through.

CLT TSA kicks you out of the terminal when the checkpoints close. This sucks if you miss a late connection and want to take the first flight out.

Generally a checkpoint will stay open until the last flight of the night departs, so if it's a scheduled departure of about 11PM the checkpoints will stay open at least that long.

Not that it matters seeing as how you probably already left!

I don't think it's TSA... they all go home. And if there are IROPS, you can definitely get away with it.

Definitely? No; I was kicked out during IROPS that got me stuck there for 6-7 hours. It sucked to have to get a hotel: after the 30min - 1 hour getting there (calling, shuttles, long checkin line) and getting up 2 hours before the flight I had only a couple of hours to sleep.

I'm not sure what time they close, but at ORD T1, the checkpoints open at 4:30 AM CST (I had to sit on a bench once and wait).

I believe the checkpoints have to stay open until the last departure is boarded. And have to open in time for the first departure.

I dont know about New York but at about 10pm DCA Terminal A goes ungarded, other than security cameras. Kinda funny what with these major threats!! Open access to a/c bygod.

I seriously doubt that they leave the concourse completely open. The most likely shut the gate and then require any employees that go through to swipe their badges.

Probably not, but when I leave there is nobody . . . not even a guard in there. BTW, that is a YX flight that gets in 10-11pm.

If others are there until 2 or 3 for IROPS, the cops usually give up, but not always.

I am 100% certain that checkpoints do not have to stay open until the last departure has boarded or departed.
