Delta's MD-11 And L-1011 City Pairs

Trying to research what routes Delta used these planes on and in what years.

Did they cover the same routes?

I know the MD-11 was retired a few yeras ago but how long ago did D retire the L-1011?

I know nothing about Deltas airline or heritage but look forward to learning.

Based on the photo database, it looks like the L10 was retired in June-July of '01.

The L1011s and MD-11s both served ATL Florida routes. MIA, TPA, FLL, MCO come to mind. ATL-LAX, SEA, PDX I believe also.

Some DL MD-11 city pairs included: PDX-NRT, PDX-SEL, PDK-FUK, PDK-TPE-BKK, PDX-NGO, LAX-NRT, LAX-NGO, LAX-HKG, JFK-NRT, JFK-TLV, JFK-CAI-DXB, ATL-ATH, ATL-IST, ATL-MAN, ATL-AMS, ATL-NRT, ATL-CDG, ATL-FRA, ATL-LGW, ATL-FCO and IINM LAX-FRA.

Unfortunately I do not have exact dates for all of these services but do know that ATH and IST were operated in 99 and that ATL-NRT was the last MD-11 route prior to retirment.

MD11: NRT-LAX-CVG stands out in my mind. My only MD11 flight with Delta.

L1011: Transcons and high-density routes such as ATL-Florida and ATL-LAX/SFO etc.

Does anyone know what kind of plane DL flew on the ATL-MAD-BCN route during the summer of 1996. It was my first interational flight and based on the DL history, I thought it was an MD-11 but could have been wrong. I was not the aviation guru that I am now.

DFW-ATL, DFW-LAX were milk runs for the 1011.

I also remember DFW-HNL.

And once upon a time the 1011 was used BOS-YUL, believe it or not.

I'm sure someone with an OAG will fill in the blanks.

We had SLC-PDX, SLC-LAX & SLC-ATL on the L1011 back in 96-98ish. I loved flying the L1011-500 from LAX-SLC back in the day... They did the Florida to ATL routes, and the MD-11s did MCO turns at least twice a day.

Yeah and if you REALLY go back a long way the L-1011 used to do CLT and RDU from ATL, too. The aircraft overnighted at CLT, which was actually the first time I had seen an L-1011 up close.

Delta also used L1011 between MSY and ATL and IIRC I saw them in LGA as well. This would have been in the 80's and early 90's.

So it appears JFK/ATL-NRT were the longest MD-11 routes. Along with PDX-SEL, what were the longest L-1011-500 routes?

SLC-JFK was also an L1011 back in 96 and was my first flight ever on the L10.

Well thinking back to my ramper days at SFO for Delta.....Delta 319 comes to mind.....
FLL-ATL-SFO-HNL.......L1011

My crew hated this flight because the cargo doors always had to be opened by the mechinics and ATL "NEVER" let us know that they were a problem. This left the crew standing around, waiting to offload the plane and not getting our break time.....
I will say this, I will still take the old 3-holers over what's flying today anytime....L-1011, MD-11, B727....Damn that was a sexy look for a plane.

ATL-MAN had both MD11 and L1011 (not forgetting A310, 767 and 777...if they had another widebodied type, I'm quite sure it would come here otherwise it'd be the odd one out!)

Delta L1011's were frequent visitors to MSY up until 1988 when they were replaced with 767's on a scheduled basis. The last time I ever saw them in MSY was for Mardi Gras in 1999, when two L1011-500's were running an ATL-MSY-ATL roundtrip for about a two week period.

MSY-ATL/DFW/LAX/SFO/SJU all saw nonstop L10 service.

I flew a DL MD-11 on CVG-LGW in March 2003, right before the flight went over to the 767-300ER- I wanted to burn off the last of my Skymiles, and had the choice of JFK-ATL-LGW r/t or JFK-CVG-LGW r/t, and did CVG-LGW since that flight was an MD-11 vs. a 767 on ATL-LGW. I was sitting next to the crew rest seat on the LGW-CVG leg, and he didn't seem too broken-hearted about the plane being retired.

I didn't see Sao Paulo, GRU listed. The last time I flew on a DL MD-11 was GRU-ATL, in April of 2002. Everything DL flies out of Brazil now is the 767.

Also, didn't see MEM on the list of L-1011s. I believe that was in the late 70s. Gosh I miss the days of the big jets at mid-sized airports!

I did CVG-ZRH-CVG in July 95 . Only L1011 I was ever on . They also did ATL-FLL towards the end of their careers. I remember seeing N737D in FLL June 01.

I remember L10s on YUL-MIA-FLL, YUL-BOS and ORD-MEM...ok mosre recently what European routes didthe M11 fly? Doesmtic ones? An M11 on ATL-MCO would have lost lots of $$$$$

I believe MEM got an L10 for a while in the 80's, especially when it was a "focus city" although I doubt that phrase existed at the time. They also had a couple of daily turns ATL-TYS in the summer of 1982 when the World's Fair was held there. That's probably one of the more unusual places they took it, albeit for a short length of time.

I remember my grandmother always flew Delta from PBI to DTW on a Tristar. This was in the early 80's. Was great fun going to the gate and looking at those nice birds.

This also may have been done while the plane was 'idle' between int'l flights or to keep pilots current .

L1011 basiclly went everywhere the MD11's but provided service also to smaller airports.

Add PHL to the L-1011 list, hence my user name.

They flew ATL-PHL and PHL-ATL, i use to fly these routes when connecting in ATL from LIT to visit family. They also had a RON (remain overnight) L-1011. They, DL, had a "night owl" service, I believe the routing was IAH-ATL-PHL-BDL it got into PHL around 0130 or 0200 I don't exactly remember. It' was my first "widebody" experience. The plane was empty most of the time and it operated in the early 80's. I would lift up the arm rests on the 5 across center seats and make my own 180 degree flat bed in Y. Big grin

Those were the days, and I suuuuuure miss those Stretch DC-8-61's and DC-8-71's DL had out of PHL. Awsome plane!

Didn't Northeast have L-1011's on order and then were delivered to DL when DL aquired NE in August 1972?

Also ATL-MSY isn't on the list.

Although not specifically mentioned in the thread title, let's not forget that DL operated a few leased DC10's while awaiting their L10 deliveries. While they served most of the same routes already mentioned, they did operate some ORD and DTW to MIA/TPA and maybe FLL flights.

IIRC DL operated L-1011 on flight 189 on a LAX-ATL-SJU and back routing on the mid to late 90's. There was also a MCO-SJU flight arriving on the late evening and departing back to MCO early in the morning. Other L10 flights from ATL were scheduled during the high tourist (winter) season, complementing 767-300 and 757. Those Tristars are sorely missed here in SJU.
