A300s/A310s With PTVs In Economy

I have looked through the photo database, and have noticed that hardly any airline operates A300s or A310s with PTVs in economy. For the A300, I only found Kuwait Airways and Tunisair, and the PTV screens are very small on both airlines. I couldn't find any images of A310 economy cabins with PTVs.

Most 777s, A330s, and A340s are equipped with PTVs. PTVs are also found on a significant number of 767s and 747s. However, they are very rare on A300s and A310s in economy. Does anyone know why?

BTW, didn't AA used to have PTVs on some of their A300s when they were briefly used on transatlantic flights? I believe those are the ones that currently feature the drop-down LCD monitors and seats with winged headrests.

That is correct. IIRC it was the MAS 3000 IFE system. I always enjoyed playing the games on them. Fortunatey (and it took way too long) AA's IFE makeover on the 777 will feature 15 games, including the ever popular Sudoku.

I must say, the TVs on those Tunisair A300s are TINY. I could probably buy bigger at my local RadioShack :P

The MAS 3000 system? I thought the MAS/Panasonic 3000 is AVOD. It is quite strange that the A300s would be equipped with a better IFE system than the 777s (the Rockwell Collins TES system). I have heard that the new system for the 777s will also be a Rockwell Collins system, perhaps the dTES or eTES system.

I double checked. It was actually the MAS 2000e system. Fortunately our online manual still had the system info so I was able to check. Sorry for the mistake.

How does that system compare to Jetblue's? Are the screens on Jetblue larger?

I am amazed Tunis Air has PTVs in the first place, given the fact the A-300s are used on low yield VFR/holiday flights to Paris, Amsterdam etc. of less then 3 hours.
Most remaining pax operators of A-300s and A-310s are not the type of airlines to be forward with PTVs, and using them on short (Chinese, American, Indian domestic flights) and cheap (Turkish charter) flights. The only candidate could be Qatar Airways who still have some A-300s, I can't find now if they have PTVs or not.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

How much does a brand new, high quality PTV cost in a new plane today, per seat in economy? Seems like a good investment anyway, keeps customers informed and happy.

Royal Jordanian are stating on their website, that all their planes will have PTVs (or "personal video entertainment units") in economy by the end of year 2007: http://www.rj.com/TravelerInformatio...tertainment/tabid/190/Default.aspx

They operate A310s, but quite frankly, I would not be surprised if they didn't have the PTVs there around new year, when I'm flying one...

The Tunisair A300 in the above picture is ex Emirates A6-EKD. Emirates were the first airline to introduce PTV's throughout all classes around 1991-1992. All of there A310's had PTV's as well but it is understood that the systems were removed prior to onward sale.

PTV's weren't that common when the A300s and A310s were around. Only very few airlines had them installed on order way into these aircraft's commercial life. EK is one of them, and QR would be a good guess.

It was not common around those times to have PTV's on any kind of airplane. How many A340s (200 & 300s - not X and not E) have them? Few. Even on the B767 it is not that common at all and when present it is very often a retrofit.

Most B777s do have the operators taking PTVs standard but not all (is it MS who didn't take the option on its early ones?). PTV was a differentiating factor for CX and SQ just ten years ago so there are still lots of relics of that time around.

Until a short while ago, none (at least most) of AC's B767 didn't have PTV on them. I imagine what it would be like to fly YVR-PVG or YVR-PEK or YYZ-NRT (sometimes substituted in the winter with a B767-300ER) without PTV. NRT-YYZ would be like a 13 or 14 hour flight?

I know United's domestic birds did not, and still dont have PTV's, even the 777's. Also DL did not have PTV's in the 764s either, and they are pretty new also.

Delta is adding PTVs to them now as they are being converted to international configuration. Delta will also add PTVs to their domestic 767-300s for their Transcon product. The international 767-300ERs are not planned to get PTVs in economy at this time due to weight concerns. However, their projectors and CRT monitors will be replaced by LCD monitors.
