The Official A380 First Flight Thread: Check-in!

Wed Oct 24, 2007 7:40 am

We're about 24 hours or so away from departure of the first commercial flight of the A380 and a.netters from around the world are converging on Singapore and Sydney. So here it be appropriate to start an official thread where A380 a.net first flighters can post their pictures, let everyone know where they are seated, and check in to let us know that they are here and ready to go for tomorrow! I imagine there will be a few threads discussing this so i thought it just best to consolidate into one gigantic "First Flight" thread complete with play-by-play action, photos and info.

I want to thank Wings for keeping all a.netters informed with his awesome countdown till the first A380 flight. The thread is quite long so I'm sure it will be locked soon. A big round of applause for Wings.

I'll try to be at the airport spotting like I was for the A380 delivery flight...hope to catch it!

Everyone, sound off!  Smile

Ok, pardon my ignorance and all, but why is this the "lucky few" Sure, I'd like to fly on an A380, but I wouldn't consider myself lucky to be on the first commercial flight. I would consider myself lucky to have one of those suites though. But other than that, its another airplane, and another flight.

Uh oh, the Peter Max and Concorde squadrons of the Anet army are massing right now to get you for that statement  Smile

At least no one is saying "she" instead of "it" to refer to the aircraft, and no one has said they are looking forward to flying on the first "frame" tomorrow as so many people like to call airplanes on here.

Of course if anyone posts a picture of the A380 on "short finals" at SYD tomorrow, I may have to get medication.

Seriously, ever since I saw the first artist rendition of the A380 in July of 2000 i've been waiting for this day, good luck SQ and Airbus.

I hope there are at least 20 trip reports from that flight !

What was the highest price those guys paid to be aboard this flight ?

I remember there were tickets on sale on eBay and it was quite high.

Anyway, good thing this first flight. Hope all goes well. Do we know If some a.netters are on the flight ? If so, we'll be able to read some great stories in a short period of time. Well, "great" stories... it's only a normal flight on a big plane but, quite interesting stories shall we say.

Yes I would normally agree but the money did go to charity and alot of children will benefit from all the money raised. So I would consider it a charity donation with a gift in return from SQ and their sponsors. I have to take my hat of to SQ and their sponsors. It was a really good idea. I hope EK QF AF LH follow suit and donate money to charity for their 1st flights.

Oops. Truly sorry I didn't know that.

In this case yes, such a flight is a very good investment in global welfare, no matter how strong the help, it's certainly worth it. Didn't really know that a big airline like SQ would forget about the benefits of a such first flight (commercially speaking) and instead give the money to charity. Fantastic.

Wow how awesome would it be to be there, at SIN or SYD to see the first commercial flight of the new largest passenger aircraft?. The sheer size and power of the A380... I can imagine what it must have been like in the early '70s when the 747 first started commercial service. Good luck to Singapore Airlines and Airbus.

Can anyone inform me, if the A380 can be pushed back or towed using the standard tug? Are there any other unique ground equipment requirements other than the jet bridges?

Thanks

Yea, some extremely lucky people. I would have loved to have been on that flight. I'm gonna go to LAX one day and see if i cant hop on one to Sidney or somewhere in a few years. I heard Virgin Atlantic is gonna bring the A380 to MCO around 2013... but im not willing to wait. lol

I am in Sydney on a cloudy wet morning, and as the local newspaper says, it may rain on the 380's parade. It is scheduled to fly at 700m up the harbour on its way in and with current winds from the north, it is said to be most likely to approach over Botany Bay. Sydney Airport is trying to discourage people going to the airport. Vancouver did the same thing last November for the 380's arrival, but in fact they made superb arrangements to accommodate spotters. I am going to be out there any way! And I was there in the early 70s when Pan Am's first 747 arrived - late and in the dark. Current forecast is for showers - there was a very low ceiling when I flew in from BNE yesterday (coming back from LRE but that's another story).

When you go to singaporeair.com and check flight status it doesn't give updated status on SQ380. Anyone know what the deal is? Pretty exciting moment in aviation history.

Out of 471 seats that's not bad. About 1%. Even though people payed a lot of the seats, they were still charity seats mostly by those who could afford such a luxury, and some people had other things come up I'm sure.
