Comical Way Points

Fri Oct 26, 2007 6:39 pm

Looking at ATL's tracon I just noticed that three points are named YABBA DABBA DOOOH, I thought this was quite funny and was wondering if there are any other comical points in a row like this and who comes up with these.

and IIRC, there is one that sounds like "DRSSR" in the midwest --- ATC will gave a command to a pilot to "cross dresser"
I love to fly, and it shows!

TRAIL and BLAZR on the ILS RWY 10L at PDX...

Also, the ILS RWY 12 at HIO features DAFFI and DUCKA in order  Smile

In DFW land, there is a fix called KMART that used to be directly above the Kmart store in McKinney, Texas... (the fix was moved when the airspace was re-engineered in 1996).

Well BOS has WYLYY and CYOTI, as well as BOSOX, CELTS and LBSTA.

As for IAH, you sorta have to know about Texas A&M to get the AGGEE ONE arrival, which has TWELF, MAAAN, MROON, RVVLE, and CORPS. The RIICE ONE arrival has OWWLS, HOOTZ, BAZBL, BAATS and CHMPZ. The ROKIT EIGHT arrival has RUDDI, AKEEM, DRXLR, MRPHY, DUUNK and SSLAM

Many local waypoints have to do with the city or state they are in, particularly with sports teams.

Minneapolis:
- HRBEK KBREW - named for Kent Hrbek and Harmon Killebrew, former Minnesota Twins
- LEINY - presumably named for Leinenkugel's beer, which is made relatively nearby in Chippewa Falls (near Eau Claire)
- DOKTR is a waypoint on the RST.2 departure, as Rochester is home of the main branch of the Mayo Clinic.
- SCHEP is a waypoint departing MSP - I think one of the guys in Fargo was named Shep or something that sounded like it - not sure if this waypoint is named after that or not
- SHUZE is a waypoint not too far from Red Wing, home of the Red Wing Shoe company.
- OLLEE SAUGR HEYDR - OLLEE is like Ole - lots of Scandinavian descendents in Minnesota and there are a lot of old "Ole & Lena" jokes about some old Scandinavian married couple or something. SAUGR is Sauger, a type of freshwater fish, as fishing is popular. HEYDR sounds like how old people in Minnesota talk - "Hey der!"
- TICKT TWOLF KGEEE LYNKS PIKKL GDNEE - the first four are about the Timberwolves. TICKT is Ticket, TWOLF is Timberwolf, KGEEE is Kevin Garnett who was with the Wolves forever until recently, and LYNKS is Lynx, the WNBA team. PIKKL is Pickle, and GDNEE is Gedney. Gedney is a brand of pickles, which calls itself "the Minnesota pickle."
- BEERI WILDD PAKKR TWINZ WOLVS LOOON - BEERI is in Wisconsin, where they make lots of beer. WILDD is named for the NHL Minnesota Wild. PAKKR is a waypoint between Green Bay and Eau Claire on an arrival route and is obviously named for the Green Bay Packers. TWINZ is Minnesota Twins. WOLVS is again the Timberwolves. LOOON is because the state bird is the Common Loon.
- ZMBNI PRESS BUKHL - ZMBNI is Zamboni (hockey is big here), PRESS isn't funny but it's named after my hometown (Prescott), and BUKHL is rather close to MSP - time to buckle up for landing, apparently.
- BRDIE GOLLF VYKES - BRDIE and GOLLF are golf references, and VYKES is for the Minnesota Vikings
- SKETR NORWD - SKETR is for Mosquitos, which are horrendous in the summer in many parts of Minnesota. NORWD is just named after Norwood, a nearby town.

That took a while, so here's just a brief list of the ones in PHX - maybe you can figure out what they mean.
- GILAA DRYHT DSERT SADLL HYDRR TUKEE HATRK COYOT DBACK HOMRR BUNTR SLIDR PAYSO PICHR BASBL GEELA NIMBY (!) GATWA HOTTT KOOLY SQUEZ VNILA SUNSS BASHA CACTY KUCOO BBALL HOOPS

"Ask the Pilot" on Salon.com pointed out the trio BLOWN, LAYED, and BAABY.

Try TERPZ, RIPKN and RAVNN near BWI

Coming to and from ORD, you're likely to cross ROYKO (of Chicago media fame), BULLZ, and VEECK (ref Chicago White Sox lore).

To say that football is a big deal in Chicago is an understatement: FRIDG (William Perry), SAYRZ (2nd best RB next to Sweetness), STALY (old name of the Bears), PAPPI (George Halas), BUTKS (self explanatory), and the BEARS intersection just off Lake Michigan over Soldier Field in Chicago.

TUS has ZONNA1 and WLDCT1 for approaches. And PHX has SUNSS and BBALL.

If someone knows the links for all these charts and could post them that would be great!

I think there's a waypoint named after an infamous controller in the Chicago area.

There are also some names which are comical without any relation to other intersections. Two that come to mind are DONGS intersection on the VOR 23 approach to DED, and HUMPP intersection on the CHINS 5 arrival to SEA.
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

BORED is just east of San Jose...

And then there's the infamous approach into Portsmouth (I think); I do know that it goes ITAWT--ITAWA-PUDYE-TTATT, missed aprch-- IDEED.

Then there's the RAIDR approach into OAK; it involves OTTOO, STIKM and RAIDR.

Little known fact about that approach. One of the IAF's is SATAN.

Fixes around LAS that I think are kind of neat include HOLDM, KSINO, LUXOR (After the pyramid hotel), CHIPZ, POKRR, SUNST (Right over the street and part of town with the same name)

MCO has MINEE, GOOFY for obvious reasons
