Anyone Know About The Empire BAe 146?

Sat Oct 27, 2007 3:37 pm

I saw this BAe 146 just once-the time I snapped the picture here. It was in summer of 1993, seen at LAX. Does anyone know the story behind this "Empire" Airlines? Was this a charter operator or some kind of corporate plane? Was it a front for something a little more nefarious-such as the "JANET" 737's at LAS? Or was this a then-new startup carrier that was performing some proving runs but never made it to actual start up?

You can't really tell from the scan, but the reg # is N462EA

According to Jet Airliner Production List

E2107 was sub leased from Jet Acceptance Corporation to Empire Airlines on 07/12/1992. It passed to Northwesr Territorial Airways on 29/05/1994. They returned it to Empire Airlines on 09/06/1994, who passed it back to Jet Acceptance Corporation.

It is currently VH-YAE of National Jet Systems.

Thanks for the info. That tells me a little about the plane, but nothing about the operator. Anyone else?

I never knew Empire flew a 146. The only jets I recall them ever operating were F28's. The livery belongs to Royal West, which briefly flew the 146 in the 80's. Must have been a lease job pre-Piedmont/Empire merger.

The plane is still flying for National Jet Systems

History:

04/08/1988 Westair (United Express) N294UE
01/11/1992 Empire Airlines N462EA
31/03/1995 Air Wisconsin N294UE
01/12/1996 Qantaslink VH-YAE Operated by National Jet Systems
01/07/2004 National Jet Systems VH-YAE

However, my question is: Was that the same Empire Airlines that was later taken over by Piedmont. I am saying that because the colours were different (Orange, red and brown)? Could somebody help?

The link to the Empire Airlines I am talking about is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_Airlines_%281976-1985%29

Thanks

That confirm my questions

I don't believe there any connection between the two Empires. The Empire I know of was the F-28 operator mentioned above flying mainly intra-New York State services. Plus, that merger was long over at the time the picture above was taken.

And re: the Royal West color scheme (that airline had also been deceased for several years by summer of '93) while similar to the above, was not quite the same. Here's a pic of Royal West.

For some reason I can't get the photo to upload, but if you go into the a.net archives and lookup Royal West Airlines, you'll see the livery is the same as in the thread starters pic.

Yes, this was a different Empire Airlines. IIRC, it's this one (I think):

In recent years, they've been doing much work for Fedex, I believe.

Thanks for the photo MattD. Now that I see them together, there is some difference. The cheat lines are wider on Royal West, close but not quite the same.

Empire's two BAe146's were based in Bellingham, Washington and operated primarily on behalf of Canadian tour operator Silver Wing Holidays, to destinations in Nevada and California. One was short-term wet-leased to NWT Air of Yellowknife to cover for Boeing 737 overhaul. Empire is still in business, based in Couer d'Alene, Idaho and is a large Fedex contractor.

Empire is now a FedEx Feeder operator based at COE but operating all over the western US and Alaska.
