Turkish Airlines Nears Order For A350 Or B787

Thu Nov 01, 2007 9:45 am

The following fair use excerpt from Flightglobal

Turkish Airlines plans order for up to 30 Boeing 787s or Airbus A350s

By Tolga Ozbek

Turkish Airlines plans to disclose a new long-haul aircraft order early next year, probably for 20 firm commitments and 10 options, covering the replacement of its Airbus A340s and A310s.

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles...0-boeing-787s-or-airbus-a350s.html

The article also mentions the following;

- Decision expected at the beginning of 2008

- RFP has been issued since May and discussions have been ongoing with both OEMs

- A technical report on the airlines fleet expansion has been completed and presented to the Board

- Medium range types to expand / augment their A320 and B737 Fleets are also under consideration.

With the Dow Jones report on AirAsiaX that's a lot of potential frames announced as RFPs today

For an A310 replacement the 787-8 would make sense but I hope they will go for the A350.
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

Well, they said that they are growing so fast that in a 6-7 years the a380 may become a possibility. As they can grow to larger aircraft with the a350, that may be an argument for the a350. But it also depends on availability I guess, as they want their aircraft sooner rather than later. Tough call IMHO, as they also have a very mixed fleet, even though an all-Airbus widebody fleet.

Perhaps the WB decision will be sooner than anticipated. Q1 2008 is closer than it appears. With Leasing being considered an option we may see something over the next few months. As for the a decision on their medium haul requirements some further local input would be appreciated as to what frames are under consideration.

Hey PanAm, usually any news about TK doesn't get a lot of hits or replies here but this order will be of decent size to generate interest here on anet. The airline is growing faster then many other airlines of its size due to its near monopoly on the fast growing Turkish market. Although there will always be politics due to TK not being a fully privatized company yet(can't wait for that day) I really think its a tough decision between 350 and 787 and don't think you can go wrong with either one.
My opinion is that TK needs a 77W type a/c in the fleet(a combo of 772 and 777W would be better then the 340 they are using for NOW) the fact that TK has an all Airbus WB fleet and the higher capacity of A350, I'm thinking they will go with the A350. A combo of 350-900 and 800 seems likely. This is all my opinion, and like I said before you can't possibly go wrong with either. It takes a long time for TK to decide and I think they missed the boat on this one also(delivery slots) so this decision should be very well thought out and should be bold since the growth will only increase in the future. Exciting times for TK ahead.
P.S They also need 333's to use on trunk EU routes etc, since 310's are leaving the fleet.

I wonder if the decision will be influenced by the recent actions of the US Congress.

Doubt that.

Quoting NYC777 (Reply 8):

It will be nothing compared to the 100+F-35 order.
About the US Congress decision, it was a split decision for political reasons just like TK's last order.
One week after the Armenian thing, 4 older US Navy ships were pretty much given to the Turkish Navy for a small cost.

I would like to see an A350 order since I would love TK to have an all Boeing 738 and A350 fleet.

Yes I agree but there is a good local thread and this is where we can see the benefit of linking 2 threads together so we can get the best update's to keep the membership informed. So here is a link to the Turkish Aviation November 2007 as not all members read every country thread that way we can stay more informed.

Quoting TK787 (Reply 9):

Thank you TK787 for putting an end to the inevitable "political element" this is a thread to focus more on TKs requirements even though we know that the decision may well be influenced and split.

Splendid. Would any local members be willing to elaborate more, perhaps what influence leasing may have in favour of selection given earlier availability of 787s via lessors. What exact medium haul requirements do they need? A330s are available for lease if needed to replace the A310s as noted by Gokmengs.

Thanks for any updates.

Seeing as they want EU membership they will probably go Airbus. After all wasnty that the reason for the intro of a320321 when they had a large fleet of NG737s??

Not really. Look at the Polish buying F-16s, LOT ordering 787s.

Yes, leasing is a great options till 350/787 become avail. TK has already put 2 332s lease orders starting early 2009. We might see more of this since 4 310s are being converted to Freighters.
TK is closer to 350 since 787 size is too small for TK's needs. Whatever TK orders within the next months will form the Long Range Fleet all the way into 2040. So, size matters, by then Turkish population will be well over 100 mil.

The 787-3/8 is perfect for replacing the A310's and upgrading some of the 321/738 routes.

If the Turkish govt has influence on this order...they must be in a quandary...frustration at the EU (esp Sarkosy) for the refusal of Turkish admission and anger at the US regarding the PKK intrusions from Iraq. May the best manufacturer win, without political interference.

Perfect in what sense? Those planes are very much bigger than an A310.

Perfect in the sense that they are the smallest wide bodies available and hence represent the smoothest capacity jump up from the 320/738/321/313 fleet. Yes, they are bigger than the 313 but that is iirelevant....airlines buy aircraft with a long term perspective of up to 20 years, well beyond the immediate capacity jump.
