Cape Town International Closed

Fri Nov 02, 2007 2:44 pm

At present CPT is closed due to a SAA 346 that is stuck in sand and the tail is blocking the main
runway

SA 333 was inbound from JNB when the incident occured-reportedly a front main gear malfunction

All flights suspended and serious delays expected

Reportedly cranes are on the way to lift the aircraft

Considering that CPT is busiest on Friday and Sunday afternoons, this is quite a major disruption.

I do recall landing on a shorter secondary runway at CPT; could this be an alternate for flights?

There has been a spate of landing gear incidents lately, with the Q400 issues, the SA)">NW 320 and now the SA 346. I presume he failed to turn off the runway onto a taxiway and got stuck in the sand

Anyone know exactly where the aircraft is stuck on the airfield? What runway was in use?

From the media...

Cape Town - Cape Town International Airport has been closed temporarily for incoming and outgoing traffic, Sapa reported on Friday afternoon.

News24 revealed earlier how an airplane "got stuck" on a main runway at the airport, causing extensive delays.

Media spokespeople said the plane got into difficulties at about 14:40 on Friday afternoon, resulting in the temporary closure of the runway.

Airport staff were apparently working hard to clear the runway as soon as possible.

Radio Cape Talk reported that the plane's front wheel malfunctioned and veered off the runway, blocking the airport's only two landing strips.

No injuries were reported.

I've been here since 16h00, significant delays but it looks like it is easing now. So much for an early start to the weekend!

According to this morning's newspaper, an investigation will be launched to establish whether it was the pilot's fault that the A340-600 left the runway on Friday afternoon. The airbus blocked the runway for several hours and caused major delays at the airport. A spokesperson of SAA says a decision must still be taken whether the pilot will lose her license or not. Passengers who were on the Johannesburg to Cape Town flight, say that, after landing, the pilot taxied "very fast" on the runway. Apparently she could not get her turn to the right in time. The plane veered of the runway and got stuck in sand right next to the main runway. Airport personnel had to first dislodge the front wheel, stuck about a meter deep in the sand, whereafter the plane was towed away. The airport was closed from 14:00 to 17:00 and no plane could take off or land.

And I thought that losing a license was up to the countries aeronatical authorities.

Oh sorry that right, SAA and South Africa have been in bed with each other for years....  Smile

Seriously, Sounds like a bold and wrong statement for the airline to make.

As to keeping their job.... That is another story....

I got some pictures via email and the nose gear was buried up to the doors in the sand so it ploughed in there pretty well.
