Delta 737-800/domestic 767-300 Seat/IFE Update

Sat Nov 03, 2007 8:17 pm

Based on posts I have read at FlyerTalk by some Delta insiders, there are now two 737-800s with the new seats and IFE. In addition to ship 3744 (N3744F), ship 3758 (N3758Y) has also gotten the new seats and IFE.

Also, the first domestic 767-300 to get the new seats and IFE is in the shop right now. The aircraft is ship 139 (N139DL). I can't wait to see it. It should be in service by the week of November 12. While some of the domestic 767-300s have gotten the leather seat covers, the mods have been on hold since Delta announced that they intend on adding new seats and IFE. Luckily, my last two flights on domestic 767-300s both had the leather seat covers. However, the seats are very short and the IFE is very old.

Great news, while we are at it can I get the numbers of conversions for:
767-400
767-300
757-200
757-200 (ex-TWA)
737-800

On a side note are the 757 done getting converted except for ex-TWA?

P.S. I know I ask this question every time some one posts anything about DL's domestic interior improvements, but I can never find them again when I look on the search functions.

There are currently 8 767-400s in international configuration, with an additional six aircraft slated for conversion for 2008. The remainder of the fleet will be converted by 2009. All domestic 767-300s will get the new slimline seats and Panasonic eFX IFE. The international 767-300ERs are only getting the eFX system in BusinessElite. There are currently two 737-800s with the new slimline seats and IFE, and will be featured on a total of 28 of them, which will also get winglets installed.

I believe so. The ex-TWA 757s actually haven't gotten the new Recaro BusinessElite seats and Weber slimline economy seats yet, nor have they gotten the new Panasonic eFX IFE installed yet. They are currently operating with the seats and IFE that they featured with AA (although in Delta's signature blue leather instead of AA/TWA cloth).

Shouldn't it be the other way around? seems weird that they are putting PTVs on coach for domestic and leaving projectors for the higher yielding international. How do they expect to compete with BA, KL, AF, VS, etc...

I just booked a trip to Europe and avoided every US carrier, I actually paid more to not take DL or AA.
If it ain't Boeing (or Embraer ;-)) I ain't Going!

Do these planes also come out with new paintjobs? That would make it really easy to differentiate them: the planes with new colors have a new interior, and vice versa.
I love ASO!

Interior mods are normally done separately from repaints. N3744F (the first 737-800 with the new seats and IFE) got the new livery as it was also retrofitted with winglets and was repainted to match the winglets. I am not sure whether N3758Y has the new livery or winglets yet.

We all have went over this millions of times at A.net. The reasons why Delta won't install new IFE on the international 767-300ERs is due to weight and cost concerns. However, their projectors and CRTs will be replaced by overhead LCD monitors, which is still better than not updating the IFE at all. Probably when Delta gets some 787s, they will have PTVs with AVOD factory-installed.

Sorry but I don't believe the line as to why the 763ERs are not getting PTVs. I think the real reason is that DL is looking at a much larger mod of its coach 763 product and it doesn't make sense to put PTVs in when there might be a much larger plan in the not too distant future. The fuel savings from the winglets that are being put on the 763s more than compensate for the extra weight the IFE would take - and the majority of DL's 763s do not fly at the edge of the performance envelope.

Maybe they could be getting new seats as well. It was also once rumored that Delta was looking into overhead bin mods for them, however, those rumors have seemed to die down. I agree that with the exception of the few newest 767-300ERs, the seats could use an update, even though they are better than the current seats on the domestic 767-300s. New overhead bins would also be a welcome addition on both the domestic and international 767-300ERs.

I also wonder if Delta will install overhead bin extensions on the ex-TWA 757s. They currently feature the factory overhead bins, although it is possible that Delta could install them when they get the new Recaro BusinessElite seats and Weber slimline econmy seats and when they get the new IFE. Curved ceiling panels like on the Transcon 757s would also be nice.

I sat in one of the new style slimline seats last night, whats nice is that the seatback is much taller, whats bad is they are very firm and hard, almost but not as bad as the FL 717's seats. Im hoping that as they get broken in, they will become a little softer.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

One thing I wish Delta would have went with are seats with winged headrests. I believe the model of seats that Delta has installed (the Weber 5751) is available with winged headrests as an option. Maybe the 777-200LRs will get seats with winged headrests. It doesn't make sense to offer an inferior product on the 777-200LRs vs. on the 777-200ERs. The 777-200ER seats also feature adjustable lumbar support, which might not be available on slimline seats.

Either way, the new seats are better than what the 737-800s and domestic 767-300s currently feature. The seats on the domestic 767-300s can't even support PTVs:

Also, does anyone know where will the extra seats be placed on the domestic 767-300s? The new 737-800 configuration has the four missing seats that were removed after 9/11, plus an extra row.

I know the new configuration will have 12 more seats than what they currently feature. Perhaps two additional seats can be placed in row 26, filling in seats 26A and 26G. At the back of the aircraft perhaps Delta can squeeze an additional row of 7 seats plus an additional row of three. Seats 37C/D/E currently feature a litte extra legroom due to the movie screen. Since the projectors and screens will be removed, the middle section aft of row 37 can be moved forward to allow better room for the new seats.
