Boeing Weekly Order Update For 11/5/2007

Thu Nov 08, 2007 4:38 pm

Boeing's weekly update for Nov. 5, 2007:

http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm

Changes include:

26 x 787 for LAN
8 x 737 UFO
2 x 777F for LAN (previously UFO)
6 x 737 for Pegasus (previously UFO)
7 x 777F for China Southern (previously UFO)

Wow in one week Boeing exceeded the total nyumber of orders that they got in October (29). Nice comeback.

288 787s orders this year and at 956 net orders!!! They could break 1000 total net orders and 300 net 787 orders before the end of November!!! Can that happen?

Nice to see carriers enjoy the 77F for their freighter ops along with the 748F gaining steam!

Along with CX's massive (17) aircraft (748F/77W ) order the month is looking great for Boeing!
Cathay says to buy 17 Boeing jets for $5.2 bln

Good to finally see the confirmation of the CZ 77F order. Along with the QR 787 order, it can be classified as one of Aviation's Worst Kept Secrets  Wink .

They already have, they just have yet to announce it. I expect an announcement sometime during the show, but if EK orders 100 A350s, QR will likely schedule around it to get some coverage.

but if EK orders 100 A350s,

I thought EK were ordering 50 A350s + 30 A330s.

Could be...

Most likely, but Boeing will still have a great year themselves.

What I find really amazing is that we'll be in our third or fourth(?) consecutive 2000+ frame order year...

FYI,
Boeing got 56 order in October. They posted the LAN order in October and it break down as follows:

18 x 788 for LAN
8 x 789 for LAN (plus the 6 x 789 they get on lease from ILFC)

How can you be so sure? What is the widebody to narrowbody ratio for Airbus? They may surpass Boeing, but I would not bet on it.

While we on this forum obsess about orders, the investors care more about $$$$$. And Airbus in recent years with few exceptions has trumped Boeing, due in large part to it's successful A32X. However Boeing has consistently been the real champ with the value of sales, usually beating Airbus about 60% vs 40% of the value of total sales.

Airbus' pending column is immense - over 500 frames - with over 800 firm. If they sign them all in the next six to seven weeks, Airbus will clear 1300 and could clear 1400 depending on how Dubai goes for them.

Boeing's pending is only 150, so they'll clear 1000 (since they're close to 950 firm as of today), but the final total could be as high as 65%-35% favoring Airbus in frames. The order value will be closer because over half of those planes are from the A320 family, I believe, while Boeing has had an excellent 747, 777 and 787 order year.

BINGO. Doesn't matter how many planes they sell, it's how much $ is made on what you sold. Assuming similar pricing, if B sold 8 planes at %120 profit and A sold 35 planes at 1% profit (obviously exaggerated for this example) B's shareholders will be happier than A's.

That we'll never know because the value of the deals is never made public. So don't worry, the endless rants of X gave those frames away for free, are safe well into the future  Smile

However, looking at the division's margins helps. If Airbus Commercial and Boeing Commercial margins stay strong over the next five years, then we know that these deals were profitable. If they slide a good deal, then we know they were going for sales numbers more then revenue numbers.

You could be right, as we all know here, Boeing ends their calender year on 31 Dec. While Airbus often extends their well into Jan. and sometimes Feb.  Angry

I am pretty sure that I read somewhere that Mr. Gallois said something to the effect that Airbus' main focus would be on profitability rather than marketshare. I guess we shall see.

The huge Paris order haul was below "desired margins" per JL, but he was quick to add that it still generated good margins.

I agree, wait and see. I think that would be true for widebody's, marketshare will not come at the expense of margins (though by Airbus' own financial disclosures, widebody margins have been taking a hit over the last few years to keep sales going, wait and see).

For narrowbodies, however, I think A will be taking a bit more out of margins to support their increased production rate. They need cash from the A320 line to support their current deficits (EADS just lost a billion dollars US this half of the year I think it was) and have expanded production to I think 39 planes per month to do so. So they will be pricing their 320's aggressively to keep the expanded production rolling (creating demand via pricing vs creating product to fill demand). This seems to support what we are seeing on the sales side for the A320.
