Visiting The Grand Opening Of LHR T5

Fri Nov 09, 2007 3:35 pm

It's opening the morning of March 27, 2008. From what I've read, the first flight in is BA from SIN or HKG and the first flight out is BA302 LHR-CDG.

I managed to get JFK-LHR arriving at 07:00, which is the second flight from JFK (the first wasn't available using miles, oh well), so T5 will have about an hour to work out all the issues.

Anybody joining me on that morning?

(Edit: fixed the flight route!)

I assume you mean JFK-LHR!
And I thought that was still in T4 until April!
Only T3 and T1 long haul flights go to T5 on opening day.

So if I fly from ARN to LAX through LHR I have to change terminal from 1 to 5 on the 27th March???

If it is I'm going to change my flight! ba.com says T4 but the BA phone agent that booked it said it was T5. I don't know what to do....

No sorry bit quick there
On opening day all the short haul operation except the B757 will move into T5
B757 will remain in T1.
The long haul operation in T3 and T1 will move into T5.
The remainder (80pc) of long haul will stay in T4.
Most of this will move in April, except JSA routes to Australia.
These will stay in T4 until Sept.
Its more complicated than that actually!

Okey, that sounds better.

So, all B757s flights will stay in T1. For how long????

Until T3 is ready for BA, I think it is June.
The B757 will be on dedicated routes. Last I looked they were HEL NCE Spain and Portugal.

Yup just as you thought you are correct, all LHR T4 Longhaul flights remain in T4 until the end of April! Only T4 Shorthaul will be moving to T5 on opening day along with T1 longhaul and some other T1 shorthaul flights.

Yes. The agent that booked my flight (and told me that I'd be flying JFK-LHR into terminal 5 on March 27) is going to be on that flight.

No. There will be lots of changes on T5 opening day.
ARN after then will see B767 6/week and the rest are A319/320/321. Only a few A321 in summer 08 but winter 08 we will see a lot of A321.
the present plan is that B757 will never operate into T5, because they are not containerised. They will all be based in T3. At the end of summer 08 there will also be A320 and B744 and B777 in T3.
The A319 will be fitted with containers when T5 opens.

Okey, I see. Really sad that we will not see any BA 757s in ARN. But we will get the A321.

Well I don't know if plans have changed in these months but this is a press release dated April 10th from BA:

Quote:
British Airways’ move will be in four phases between March 2008 and October 2008:

Phase one – end of March 2008

Just over 70 per cent of British Airways flights at Heathrow will move to Terminal 5 from March 27, 2008 including:

All longhaul flights from Terminal 1
All shorthaul flights from Terminal 1 (with the exception of Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon and Nice, Helsinki and flights operated by franchise partner GB Airways)
All shorthaul flights from Terminal 4 and
Flights to and from Miami, which currently operate from Terminal 3.

Phase two – end of April 2008

A further 20 per cent of flights will move to Terminal 5 from April 30, 2008, including:

Longhaul flights to and from Terminal 4, (eg New York, Washington, Delhi and Cape Town) with the exception of flights operated as part of the codeshare agreement with Qantas (Bangkok, Singapore, Sydney and Qantas flights handled by British Airways).

Phase 3 – end of June 2008

Flights to and from Barcelona. Madrid, Lisbon. Nice, Helsinki and GB Airways franchise services, which will move from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 at the end of June 2008.

Phase 4 – end of October 2008

BA/Qantas codeshare flights (*Bangkok, Singapore, Sydney and Qantas flights handled by British Airways) will move to Terminal 3 at the end of October 2008, as part of the move by all oneworld airlines.

Obviously there will be changes with above "Phase 3" as GB airways won't be flying for BA by June 2008 and ALG has been added to that list. It's still unknown if new BA services to AGP and FAO will also be served with 757 out of T3 but seems logical to do so. New services to IAH and DFW will be located at T4 on March 2008 acording to oneworld timetable so these ones won't be at T5 either upon completion of "Phase 2" above.

I guess I have to change my JFK-LHR flight.

Not yet. I'm still too upset. There's no rush, but I am going to change it to early March and early July. I have to go in those months anyway.

Wow - I am looking at the NCE route in particular, and indeed, all a/c are set to be B757 on that route.
Doesn't this completely kill the idea of flexibility? I mean, traditionally, some of the schedules have been tagged at "EQV" ie. varying equipment, as the route have varying traffic.
I mean, in the winter, traffic is much lower, hence the use of a mix of A319 & A320 & some B757.
Then in May (film festival + Monaco Grand Prix), it's a mix of A320 + B757 & B767. Then in the summer, it's a mix of B757 & B767, with only a few A320 once in a while. etc. etc.

I am asking this because I can already see the price for an economy class ticket, say for Monaco Grand Prix week-end, from London to Nice, going on 23rd May 2008 and returning on 26th May 2008, is already extortionate! And we are 6 months away!!! Guess: GBP. 582, that's about $1000 ! This is grand theft!

Yes but that is only for summer 2008.
With the next winter schedule there will be A320 based at T3, operating with the remaining B757.
Remember that by winter 2008 up to 6 B757 will have gone to Laurel and be based in BRU.
