Runway Incursion News On CNN

This is some interesting news piece about two incedences that came pretty close to a become disasters ..

If the graphics are a realistic depiction of what actually happened, I'd have been shittin myself if I had been on the American Eagle aircraft landing at SFO!

I have always been surprised that runway incursions don't happen more often. It would be so easy to kill close to 600 people by simply moving 2 meters at the wrong time.

The following overshceduled airports are ticking time bombs IMHO:
BOS - very common to see 3 diff runways, each intersecting, used concurrently = distaster waiting to happen
LGA
JFK
EWR
SFO
ORD

Scarily enough, i believe we are on borrowed time...  Sad

This also shows the importance of both Captain and First Officer crew members maintaining regular if not continuous, peripheral visual checks whilst both on the ground and on short finals.
There isnt really a dark side to the moon, as a matter of fact its all dark!

The Republic Airlines a/c was an Embraer 170 operating for Frontier as Flight 4912 from SFO to LAX.
The SkyWest a/c was an Embraer 120 Brasilia operating as United Express Flight 5741 from MOD to SFO.

Yes... ORD will resemble a rotated DFW when complete, though thats 10+ years in the future.

DCA during rush periods does not have what I would label WONDERFUL seperation, generally around 10 seconds between liftoff and the landing a/c crossing the threshhold. Mind you, during peak rush.
Just say NO to scabs.

Was the Skywest EMB-120 on a LAHSO clearance? If so it would be pilot error like the UA/DL incident. Not a sign of a bad ATC system, but a sign of less than vigilant pilots.

Well I would like to say that I just landed at LAX no more than 2 hours ago from SFO and i survived the "perilous" runway crossings and danger of incursions Big grin but it is something to be concerned about. Could this be due to the fact that more RJ's are in the air? Not a lot of Air Trafic Controllers or a mixture of both?

In VMC, that's 9 seconds more than you would need !!!

If anything, the ORD reconfigurations will result in MORE crossing of runways, which is why the FAA has pushed for end-around taxiways on a couple of the close-in runways. So if anything, it will make runway incursions worse. It's actually fairly uncommon for passenger aircraft to cross an active runway here as compared to some other airports. On most common flows, the ends of 10 and 22L are the only places it routinely happens.
