Flight Attendant Jumpseats

Sat Nov 10, 2007 9:49 pm

I've always noticed that some flight attendant jumpseats seem extremely small for two attendants. For example, the double jumpseats on the MD-80's are obviously intended for two attendants, but they seem to be uncomfortable for two people (especially if one happens to be just a bit overweight for their size). Also, the rear jumpseat on the MD-80 seems to be more or less touching the floor. Does the seat raise when you pull it out?

Jumpseats can be very uncomfortable, a metal pan base with a thin cushion as the only barrier of defence against a hard landing! They can be very narrow depending on aircraft type and location onboard. They are only designed for use for the short period of take-off and landing, so I dont think airlines factor too much into thier cost when ordering. Shame as a lot of time we end up riding out turbulance in them and that is very uncomfortable.

As someone whose spent a lot of time on the jumpseats of the DC9 family of aircraft (DC9, MD80, 717), I can attest they are indeed small. However, at 6'4", I still fit comfortably on the shared jumpseat. (It's all about staying in your allotted space).
