Issue At PHX?

Sat Nov 17, 2007 4:25 am

Just landed at PHX and there were about five to seven emergency vehicles staged near T3 with lights and sirens activated. They are holding short of the taxi way. Are they prepared for something? Is there an emergency landing in progress?

Highly doubt sirens were on, seeing as the vehicles were stationary.

But I do see them out there quite often, maybe a training session? Doubt it was anything serious.

More than likely a training session. Those PHX folks are pretty current in everything they do. Everytime I fly out of PHX, they are always training. I'm glad to see that the PHX emergency crews are ready for just about anything.

No...they lost a runway tonight. Had planes stacked up at bruiser and drake holding. Albuquerque center said they there were down to one runway for a bit, and that was the reason they were holding most of the inbounds. I was flying myself when all of it happened, I am curious as to what happened??

Why would you doubt sirens were on? I saw them! They were holding short of the taxiway on the north side of the field. It didn't look like an exercise considering more and more fire support we're speeding past our plane to join them. If it was training, why would the sirens be on while all the apparatus' were holding just short of the taxiway?

Because sirens are used to let drivers know they are coming and to get out of the way. Not too many drivers on the tarmac.

Uhh a siren is a sound, not an object...you cannot 'see' a siren. A rotating beacon/LED is an object to be seen.

Sorry about that. You guys are so damn literal. I meant there were emergency vehicles with their BEACONS/LEDs activated. They were staged short of the taxiway on the North side of the airport in what appeared to be standing by to tend to some sort of emergency . So, my question was, was there an issue or not?

Did you guys really not have any clue that's what I meant? Or, did you just want to debate for the sake of debating? Pretty sad.

To be honest.. I've never seen a Air Crash Rescue truck with a siren..!! Did you actually hear it...? Or are you just guessing in was on..? Anyway..... It could be almost anything. They get called out all the time. At my airport it happens so often I don't even pay attention anymore.

I have no idea if anything was going on but I see them at work all the time with lights on and everything and I always wait for an emergency but it is always just a training mission like everyone said. So most likely you saw them training for something.

Not likely, if you read the rest of the thread:

Well, since one is visual and one is sound, and since the two have differing degrees of emergency, whether you meant sirens or just the emergency lights is an important issue (that you have since explained). Don't freak out at us because you used the wrong word. So to answer this question - the first one was the case.

Guys, they were probably positioning themselves for another aircraft inbound with a problem (since Friday afternoons aren't usually a popular time for training).

As for the siren/no siren, it's not worth arguing about...  Yeah sure

No, but apparently there was a security breach tonight... 15 US planes de-bagged and re-screened. Total Charlie-Foxtrot. There goes our on-time goal!

From what I heard, there was a US A-321 inbound with an inoperative landing gear. Is this accurate?

I was out by the triturator that night and saw all of the fire trucks staged across the taxiway. A few of them followed a Southwest plane to the gate. Don't know what happened exactly though.
