I've noticed recently that it seems most teams visiting Lambeau Field fly into ATW as opposed to GRB (which is just down the street from Lambeau).
(see, for instance, the Panthers charter http://flightaware.com/live/flight/USA9094 for tomorrow's game)
Anyone able to shed some light on why this is the case?

IIRC there was a thread about this last season. I believe the reason they go to ATW instead of GRB is due to hotel accomodations.

Wouldn't it just be easier to get a hotel closer to Lambeau? I'm from Wisconsin, and I know how traffic can be, but it seems easier just to go to GRB.

Interesting topic for me as I am scheduled to work HA's Raiders charter to GRB next month and as of now, we are scheduled to fly into GRB direct from OAK. I've never been to GRB, actually never been to Wisconsin. Is there anything to do in GRB besides go to Lambeau Field, which btw, I'm REALLY looking forward to?! If we do fly into ATW, how far is that from Lambeau?

The big reason for ATW is because the Away Team playing the Packers generally stays at the Paper Valley Hotel, which is in downtown Appleton, and the ATW airport is much closer to there than GRB. The hotels close to Lambeau are usually all booked by visiting fans. It makes for some good photography, because you see widebodies in ATW that you don't normally see. And my office provides a great view of it all. 
That is correct. GRB is only a 5 minute drive from Lambeau assuming traffic is good (Which after a packer game it usually isn't). The charter usually parks near the FBO, and not at the terminal, and the buses typically drive on the tarmac and take the teams straight to the airstairs to board their flight.
ATW is only about a 30 minute drive from Lambeau, assuming good traffic. (I think the drive to Lambeau from ATW is shorter than the drive from JFK into Manhattan actually, or IAD into Washington) Another thing you can do in GRB is Onieda Casino, which is right across the street from the GRB terminal. They also have a poker room, which is only a short drive. Aside from that, I am not terribly familiar with GRB. If you do come into Appleton, the Fox Valley Mall is not far from the airport, and there are plenty of good restaurants on College Ave. I recommend the Wooden Nickel myself. Its run by a friend of mine, and he serves a pretty good meal. plus you can play NTN trivia if thats your thing.

From the parking lot of Green Bay airport to the parking lot of Lambeau Field: 15 minutes; and you might be able to do it in 10 minutes with light traffic and if the stoplights are in your favor.
I presume that ATW is Appleton: I would guess that from the parking lot of Appleton airport to Laubeau Field to be in the over 30 minutes (perhaps 30 to 40 minutes).
If I were trying to find a nice (business class) hotel to house a team and its staff.... Appleton, and is a very viable location. I can easily see visiting teams chosing to stay in the Appleton area, which then makes flying into Appleton a no brainer.

I didn't know Green Bay had stoplights!
Strange that some teams opt for APW vice GRB. I suppose it's a matter of preference. The Bears used to (and I believe still do) charter buses up the road to GB. Things used to be so simple for some visitors when the Packers played some of their home games in Milwaukee (County Stadium).

slightly off topic, but still kind of related, I have always wondered because GRB and ATW are fairly close, have Green Bay and Appleton ever considered building one larger regional airport midway between the cities?

Will never happen as there really is not a reason to build a brand spank'n new airport. It was probably never done because both cities support their own airports well.

It works liek that with the patriots and PVD
The patriots always use PVD except for the superbowl they use BOS for media purposes
Visting teams arrive PVD about 60-70% of the time, and depart PVD 95% of the time (depending on the airline in question) occasionally the teams will arrive into BOS or BED depending on which hotel they stay at, but in most cases the plane will still pick them up at PVD.

I've always wondered the same, especially when I used to live in that area. I also doubt it will happen. Both airports do fine capacity-wise, have good frequencies and usually nearly identical fares. Only difference is NW has some mainline at GRB and there's no AA in ATW.
