What's it like to sit backwards during take-off and landing? Seems fun!

As the flight was de-planing in SFO, we were surveying a few business class passengers and the feedback was very positive. Quite a few passengers had great things to say about the aft-facing seats. Overall, this refurbishment is unbelievable. This is a completely different UA. Very exciting to say the least. As a side note, there is going to be a delay in the refurbishment schedule until all of the "bugs" are worked out in this first prototype aircraft. This is going to be quite an undertaking.

From the pics, this looks like a nice upgrade, and a step up from American's rather cluttered new offering.

It seems that UA has selected one of those overhead bin refurb kits. Does anyone know if the new bins go all the way through economy as well?

And do we have a reg #?

Wow actually that looks pretty sweet!! Those First Pods and the new biz do look good!!

I have to say I am normally an AA person but considering that UA have pulled this out of the bag, AA really needs to rethink how badly UA will hurt them with these cool seats!!

What was it doing in SFO? I thought the first 767 was going to be based out of IAD, rotating through European destinations, namely FRA,ZRH and LHR.

Looks very nice, although it looks like PAX are sitting facing each other with no privacy across the aisle. Wonder how that will work out?

Don't know about UA, but in Club World on BA, sitting backwards is certainly fun! T/O is more of an experience than landing, esp during the climb!

I pulled up the ship routing for the next couple days and it is in fact doing IAD-FRA runs, and every couple days making a SFO run. The only thing I can think of are MX checks? Maybe the a/c was due for some routine work, who knows. But you will see it making a IAD-SFO run at least once a week according to the routing.

I have sat backwards a couple times on Southwest and once in a F/A jump seat. It is kind of funny when you are climbing our because you feel like you are pitching forward a bit. The old 727 had a pair of seats facing each other halfway back as well. In the pics it seems the flat screens block your view of someone directly across from you. However beyond seeing the passengers F/A sit backwards because it is the safest position. This type of FC pods are annoying if you are traveling with someone and want to visit.

Sitting backward on take IS quite the experience. Years ago I flew USairways and the first row was facing backward with a table inbetween tht and row two. The only thing I didn't like is you are facing the entire cabin. I was moving to the midwest and was sad to leave everyone behind as they all came to the airport. I stuck my face in a mag so people wouldn't see me tear up.

Routing to SFO is probably to repair/work on any bugs in the new seats.

I'm not quite sure what the lavatory refurbishment in the premium cabins are. It looks like the Airbus Lavs with faux granite counters. That and the lack of "full" 777 style bins are the only things that I think they could have improved on

I'm really looking forward to flying the new UA cabins. It's about time a U.S. carrier put some style into it's inflight product. Now, if UA could only give their F/A's a completely brand new look. Those uniforms are about as dowdy as they come... especially when worn by some of UA's more senior F/A's. There are quite a few airlines that have far more styllsh uniforms that look great on the more mature, fuller-figured gals.
Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

What they should do is rotate cain crews within Star so we could get us some SIA crew for a year. Then the transformation would be complete.

Great looking seats by the way. Despite what many people say these seats are better than even many mainline Asian and Euro carriers. Agreed it isn't VS, EK or SIA but looks pretty damn good compared to most others.

Still prefer CX, EK, SQ....... but for an U.S. carrier, a step in the right direction

Gary

Maybe it's just me, but after sitting in a jumpseat with no windows and semidarkness (sorry ERJ F/A), or even worse on a C141B with rear facing seats and no windows, kind of sucks. It's almost as bad as this one roller coaster I rode at Majic Mountain in CA where one train would go forward, the other backward on a wooden roller coaster. I just feel better facing forward.

Then again, if I'm facing forward in my jumpseat on the climbout, I may get too comfy and my head may lay on the headrest and I may fall asleep. That wouldn't be too cool. Oh wait, I did J41 service I was in back of all the pax in the lav. At least the stench kept me awake. Oh, by the way, who ever came up with coffee grounds getting rid of the smell in the lav, it doesn't. Quit that myth yesterday! And for those of you who don't throw away the empty or near empty juice boxes in the EMBRAER 145 galleys, or spill something, clean it up or throw it out! Oops, going off tangent there. Gotta check the turkey and start the green bean casserole. This is the first Thanksgiving I get off since I quit flying and my ol' lady is on my ass. Gotsa to go...

Anyone knows if the 777 style bins/ceiling panels are all throughout the entire airplane or "a-la-Cheapo" like on AA 763's. Looks like UA did not replace the side wall panels for 777 style like AA did in their 763 Business Classes.

Maybe its just me, but I think that with the new bins in First, and the old bins in economy, it kind of makes the plane look rather tacky. I mean, look at the movie "Soul Plane" with the cool interior up front, and the "Locker bins" in the back.

Does anybody else agree? If you're going to put new bins in an aircraft, put them all the way through. It makes the airplane look better instead of like "White Trash" in the back, and "Sir Pimp" up front

While it would look better to have the signature style cabin throughout, not many people would actually notice, Id say. It not worth the extra money, especially in a climate woth an uncertain outlook.

These seats look really good, Im slightly more impressed with C than F, but both look to be very compeditive with the current generation of business class seats. How good or bad the service might be, we'll have to see. Ive not flown UA at all, personally.

Are UA planning any other changes to the product? Like meals, amenity kits, etc, or is it just the seat?

That cabin looks great!

As far as the new bins go, I agree it is a bit cheap on United's part to only refurbish the F and C portion with new bins. People will notice. Does anyone know if a similar bin refurbish will happen on the 744s in F and C? And are they finally replacing the ubiquitous grey carpet with red and white spots that we have known to be united with the blue one?

Well it looks like UA has risen the bar for C class offerings. It does look nicer than the new AA offering that is for sure.

I do agree with what others have said give the new bins through out the whole cabin.

UA's timeline on their website says they are planning for debut in August 2008 for First Suite passengers a new menu and "host of new offerings, designed to make the travel experience more enjoyable than ever dreamed possible." Business already as a new menu and wine list.

These two cabins will really be the best looking premium cabins of any US carriers. I believe they should put some type of wall coverings on the bulkheads, looks so sterile right now.

While I know everyone on this site bashes everything AA, but this new first class is identical to what AA has, except UA's TV is larger.

I would have liked to see a suite product too but then I thought that UA is probably the only airline I can think of that has a 3-cabin First class product on their 767's so at least they are making an attempt when obviously First Class on this type of aircraft, with its physical limitations, is hard to financially subsidize.

Actually, the seats are very different. UA designed their suite in house and has a lot of differeent features than AA- especially when it coms to storage space and privacy.
