I got kind of a chuckle out of this statement by Medland:

I can just see the FL folks being pretty impressed reading that and being very anxious to start flying there!
Can't blame the folks for trying but I'm not going to hold my breath; given the price of oil (and the large amount of it needed to fly from RNO to the east coast), the congestion issues at JFK (and to some degree, EWR as well) and the recent history of failed RNO service, this might not be the best time to be pushing for east coast routes.
It doesn't mention any incentive program in place at RNO. Anybody know about that? In any case, good luck Reno!

I get your point, but then again, FL has never flown to Reno and doesn't have that large of a west coast presence. So, although those of us on the east coast know very well who they are, it's no surprise folks in Reno and the surrounding area don't.
On service to New York, didn't CO fly Saturday only RNO-EWR service several years ago? Maybe it was announced and never started, but I swear I remember that coming down the pipe.

I remember reading something about that too, not sure what happened or if it ever started.

Quite frankly, I think Reno would stand a better chance at JFK service as a 1 stop routing, possibly something like
RNO-SLC-JFK-SLC-RNO. B6 doesn't have that great of Revenue loads on their SLC-JFK flight anyway, and they are trying to build somewhat of a focus city at SLC anyway.

I'm actually surprised Reno doesn't have service to IAD from United. It might have been discontinued when Indy Air went bankrupt.

That route was not in operation when Indy even started up. If they did fly this route, it was at least a few years ago.

IIRC, RNO did not have any service from Indy air.
What about WN starting RNO-BWI...196 passengers each day per fare measure (RNO-DCA/IAD/BWI). Should be enough for one daily flight.

Yes, CO did Saturday-only EWR service a number of years ago for the ski season.
Yes, RNO, along with local tourism authority, does offer advertising support for airlines, but only for new, previously unserved non-stop markets.
Independence never served RNO.

If SX can't profitably fly from CMH to SAN or BLI(SEA), I don't really see much hope to see them in RNO (until of course they are much closer to flying all 60+ of their a/c...

The DOT 1Q07 figure is actually 225 O&D pax/day but even that means only about 110 pax/day each way. (The article maybe was using last year's summer figure of 140 each way...) In any case, I wonder if anyone would seriously consider starting that route with those numbers given todays economic climate...
Also, remember that WN recently cancelled BWI-LAX/OAK and PHL-LAX/OAK which probably had somewhat higher pax counts than that! I wouldn't be too surprised to see WN grow RNO slowly but I certainly wouldn't expect any long-range flights from there for a long time.

Thanks for the info; IMHO, probably not a real major incentive to most (major) cx in the overall scheme of things.

No chance. RNO-JFK is 2095nm which is already close to, if not over the range of any CRJ out there, and when you factor in that RNO is also a Hot&High airport, it renders the flight impossible. Granted, you could also implement payload restrictions, but with a plane that already has a relatively high CASM, the last thing you want to do is drive the CASM up further.

I'm not sure the New York area would be a market worth Reno actively pursuing, non-stop flights or not. Yes, New York has vast amounts of people, but it also has the Catskills for skiing (although according to Buddy Hackett the Catskills are "little bitty Jewish hills, not great big Christian mountains!") and Atlantic City for gambling (although Drew Carey compared gambling there thusly: "You're gonna lose money either way, but gambling in Vegas is like getting swindled by a high-priced call girl whereas gambling in Atlantic City is like getting mugged by a crack-whore").
A push for (more) non-stop flights to the Southeast where we have neither skiing nor gambling seems to me to be a better choice. WN has non-stop flights from BHM-LAS, so a non-stop or two from BHM-RNO should be doable if the interest and pax loads could be built up.

You would think that RNO could get EWR service (with the CO hub) easier than it could get JFK/BWI service.

Its a nice idea, but the business case for a RNO-NYC or RNO-WAS nonstop service is a difficult one......both demand and yields would be issues on these proposed services. The route is too long for regional jet service and would have trouble supporting a 150 seat airliner on a daily basis. CO would be the best candidate: a 735 with winglets could be the right sized aircraft for a EWR-RNO route, but I just dont see it happening.
