Tu-204 For Venezuela?

According to Airliner World current issue :
"Aviastar Aviation Complex is in advanced talks to place versions of the Tu-204 in Venezuela. A delegation from the Latin American country visited the compagny's facilities in October with a view to buying up to five aircrafts for use by the Government and national carrier Conviasa".

Should be one more great new for Tupolev after Iranian order. They could try to build maintenance complex for both Cuban and Venezuelan Tupolev (and why not other South American airlines's Tupolev in the future!).

Well, neighbouring Guyana used to operate Tu-154, so Tupolev got experience of the Venezuelan climate.

I think the TU204 would be a cheaper option than a used 757 for ConViasa and provide reliability for expansion within North and Sotuh America. Nice to hear of a TU204 order outside of the Soviet sphere.

Wouldn't this decision have more to do with Chavez's wish to do away from anything built in United States? I mean, if I were to buy an airplane, I would probably want to buy something proven, tested, and easy to fix (in case it brakes down). Also, in the case of Venezuela, with the oil barrel at around 100 dollars, I don't think decisions being made by the local government have a lot to do with money, but rather only on politics.

Having said that, it will be nice to see the airplanes in Venezuela.

Ogre727, if there´s a boycott against Venezuela from the US then it would be handy to have Tupolevs instead of Boeings, anyways Tu-204 is proven aircraft flewn for 17 years now.

The TU=204 would be ideal for Conviasa routes within South America and carribbean and maybe Miami too.

That is what I meant, seems to be more politically rather than a money driven decision (boycott, etc). Nothing against the Tu-204, but in my mind if politics were completely left out, it would make more sense to operate aircraft for which you could easily find spare parts, maintenance, etc.

You are right, I said it wrong. Implying that the Tu-204 is not a proven aircraft was a mistake on my part.

No big deal, surely Cuba could serve the Tu-204s, they got long experience with Russian airplanes, even modified one
Russian plane with bigger wheel, Cuban style..

Its their decision to make. If they go for the TU204 be nice to see one fly in a part of the world where there are few of these flying.

Depending on the modification, about $40 million for a new Tu-204.
Keep in mind that Tupolev is starting to have good financing options with the Russian government acting as a guarantor. Technically the planes could be given at a discounted rate due to all the new fighters they are buying.

Funny as it seems, but this political face-off might be the Russian manufacturers luck too. Imagine that For example Cuba, Iran, Venezuela and who knows who else are basically left with the option to buy Russian made (perfectly good and reliable by the way) airplanes. Therefore forcing them to create maintenance bases and supply-chain, etc. Everything that currently blocks the manufacturers from selling these nice machines to a wider variety of customers. Giving options to less wealthy customers to maintain their equipment all around the world. If Russian suppliers play their cards right and use these sales to set up a world-wide supply chain with partially putting the costs on these politically influenced customers... hmmm... there could be a time when an African or Asian or South-American customer can get good support and maintenance for it's Russian equipment almost as quick and easy as with Airbus or Boeing. Then throw in the lower price factor and voila, you have a clear business case for a successful comeback of Russian manufacturers... especially if they get to streamline down their products and not let every workshop get involved in simultaneously producing dead end planes...  Sad

But why Airbus isn´t an opnion here? Chaves seems to be in good terms with France.

You don't like to see politically driven orders. However, I have to say, I'm glad to see TU getting orders for this fine aircraft. I think TU could have a bright future in civil aviation. It would be nice to see them crack the EU or US markets as well.

Venezuelan people love American people.......it is just Mr. Chavez that like's to create conflics. though the TU204 kick ass, may be they should look towards Brasil and go for the E195's or something......less capacity, but much more reliable when it comes to support, parts and so on.....
if not, remember what happended to all Russian planes in South American airforces after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the only country in S. America that had Russian planes (MiG-29s) was Peru.

well why not it would be nice to see more TU-204 in Venezuela... well currently we see several per week the Cubana Tu-204Freighter...

Would love to see a TU-204 in Conviasa's colors! and love the fact that the TU-204 is slowly becoming more and more popular; Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia! although sad that is mostly purchased by countries enemy of the United States

In the end, does it really matter? The Venezuelan people are not thrilled with Hugo at this time in history. His time is limited.

Guyana Air 2000 Tu-154 were leased from Tarom.
Imperial Air in Peru also operated Tu-134 in the past (and I wonder if An-24 and Yak-40 aren't still flying there).
