5 Seek Medical Care After United Airlines Treats Employees to Thanksgiving Dinner
Full article: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,312602,00.html

Chicago (AP) Five United Airlines workers sought medical attention for nausea and vomiting after the company provided a Thanksgiving meal to employees that included questionable turkey.

United provided the turkey spread at O'Hare International Airport on Thursday for nearly 3,000 mechanics, baggage handlers and other airport employees, not including flight crew members, working the Thanksgiving holiday.

The dinner was seen as a reconciliatory gesture from the company to its employees, according to Don Wolfel, the president of Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association Local 4, which represents mechanics at United.

Unions have criticized United management since last year as tens of millions of dollars of stock and option awards were granted to top UAL managers after employees took big pay cuts in bankruptcy.

"For years, management worked to distance themselves from employees, but now they're trying to reach out to us," Wolfel said of the holiday meals. "The idea is that we're all in this together."

But one of the meals for dayshift crews quickly ended after staff found that the "turkey was not edible," said Megan McCarthy, a United spokeswoman.

"There were questions about whether the turkey smelled quite right," Wolfel said. "The popular opinion was that it didn't."

Five employees reported nausea and a few workers vomited, said John Zautcke, a medical director at the O'Hare office of the University of Illinois-Chicago Medical Center.

......and thousands of other UA employees around the USA did not get sick from their dinners. After years of bankruptcy, gestures like providing Thanksgiving dinner for those employees who are working, is appreciated.

So what's your point? Yes, the press only prints bad news. Let's keep this in perspective.

Agreed! A little is better than none. UA management has improve a little (not much) but that's a start. Funny thing was in the control center at LAX employees who worked the day shifts were offered turkey sandwich and other goodies served Business Class style. However, when it came to dinner for those that worked in the control center service was changed to Economy style.

I totally agree with you. This kind of thing could happen to anyone. It's nice that UA management had a little courtesy to think about those working on the holiday. To put that in the news is a ridiculous waste of space. just my 2 cents worth....

ORLANDO, Florida (CNN) -- After a lovely Thanksgiving dinner complete with Turkey, Stuffing, Corn Pudding, Green Bean Casserole, Rum-Glazed Yams, Cranberry Jelly, Dinner Rolls with Honey Cinnamon Butter, Sausage & Peppers For My Italian Friends, and Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes, eight close friends sat around an Orlando living room last night with indigestion. It could have been from the copious amounts of Pinot Noir or Chardonnay that were ingested by the participants of the smorgasbord or it may have been from the enormous amounts of food shoved into their mouths. A trip to the hospital may have been necessary for some. However, they bravely decided to wait it out. Local officials are investigating the incident, citing many similar situations in living rooms around the country yesterday. This oddity seems to occur yearly, around the same time of the month every November, and then again a month later. Stay tuned for further updates.

Happy Holidays A.Netters!!!!

It's not even the contracted caterer's fault - they subcontracted it out! To their credit, UA even tried to make amends:

Fair use excerpts from Chicago Tribune (read full article here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...hi-united_23nov23,0,1985629.story)

"United's operation was not disrupted, she said. The food was not for flight crew but for mechanics, baggage handlers and other airport employees. Management gave them all $10 gift certificates for the airports' food vendors to make up for the loss of the meal. ||| Offering holiday meals was seen by many as a reconciliation gesture, said Don Wolfel, president of Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association Local 4, which represents mechanics at United Airlines. ||| For years, management worked to distance themselves from employees, but now they're trying to reach out to us," Wolfel said of the holiday meals. "The idea is that we're all in this together." ||| McCarthy said the meal had been catered by Asti Italian Foods in Bensenville. But Roseanna De Astis, a member of the family who owns the Italian deli, insisted that was not the case. She said United asked them to do the catering for 2,900 employees, but because her family's deli doesn't do large turkey dinners, they passed the job on to a west suburban caterer. That caterer could not be reached for comment.

Jeez,a few years ago Honeybaked Ham catered our Dodge store for some contest they won,and a bunch of people got sick. Didn't make the local news, let alone USA Today.Must have been a slow news day. They never report on anything positive the airlines do,just the negative.........

If you read the story closely, it sounds more like mass hysteria than actual illness.

The turkey became questionable, it didn't "smell quite right" and then afterward, some people complained of stomach problems.

You can convince yourself to throw up rather easily if you think you ate something bad. There doesn't have to be anything wrong with the food. It just takes a little neurosis, and 5 out of 3000 people easily have that level of neurosis.

Which is not to say the turkey was fine, just less than 1 % of a large group of people getting sick from a catered meal is not a very high number. I would expect that at any restaurant around the world, 1% of the people that eat there a night have nausea, upset stomach or other distress later, but don't attribute it to anything but a "bad stomach" or "not agreeing with what they ate." Food poisoning is very common, as are sensitive stomachs, allergies and stress induced nausea.

I sure hope UA's inflight meals on Thanksgiving Day were much better.

UA really has to start getting their act together soon if they want to survive. Not that they've recently exited Chapter 11 but their management team still stinks and it pays to wonder if they were responsible for cooking the turkeys...  vomit

I suspect that there will be some folks running for cover here soon. It seems very fishy that a small, "family" deli would be given the contract for 2900 workers and then farm it out. Why go to an incompetent deli as the caterer in the first place? If the media/health dept dig into this, they're gonna find nepotism, favoritism or a kickback here somewhere. There are PLENTY of first-rate organizations in Chicago that could have done a good job catering this. Some suburban deli is obviously an inappropriate place to spend $50,000 plus on catering -- but provides a ripe opportunity for impropriety. Someone's getting fired, as they should.
