Air Tanzania Orders A319, A330, Q400?

First time I'm hearing about it, but extremely pleased to see yet another A330 order ( if not leased) with a yet another new operator.  Smile

Seems that Airbus can easily keep the A330/A340 line at full speed until the A350 arrives and beyond.

Last week's rumour was A320s. There was no mention of A330s that I saw.

As a former resident of DAR I'd be thrilled to see ATC A330s flying over my old house in Msasani but it seems a big jump from two and a half elderly 737-200s to a long-haul fleet of modern widebodies.

But I'll be the first to pop the Moet!  champagne

If indeed it is confirmed I am very pleased for Air Tanzania as an airline, and for Tanzania as a country. Tanzania is an amazing country, with amazing people, but is not catered for as well as NBO & Kenya as far as airlines go.
Flown to 147 Airports in 62 Countries on 83 Operators and counting. Wanderlust is like Syphilis, once you have the itch it's too late for treatment.

A while ago Bombardier and Airbus were awarded preferred bidder status, so it makes sense.

I believe this order was confirmed earlier, but can't find a source right now.

EDIT: Here you go (not a final confirmation though):

Air Tanzania is reportedly set to receive two used Bombardier Dash 8-Q300s before the end of the year, and two brand new -Q400s next year. The aircraft are to be used on short-range routes, while the airline is also reportedly working on acquiring A320 aircraft to serve international routes.

Just had a look at the Air Tanzania website for any clues. It's down for maintenance as was the case when I last looked a year or so ago and has the same banner message about Mission Statement and Vision.

Looks like they need more than new aircraft.

BTW, they used to fly a 767-300 some years ago didn't they? What happened there? I remember seeing a Giraffe on a tail at some European airport.

LHR/LGW forinite. It should be a great tourist boost for Tanzania although I agree the 330 seems excessive. they used to operate 762s to LGW.

If i am not mistake, the B767, Air Tanzania used to operate was then acquired by Ethiopian Airlines and after some time this fateful aircraft crashed near the Island of Comoros in early 1990. I think it was a hijact but not sure and i think no survivors.

we are recieving news that ATC is getting the Dash 8 by end december.
Lets see that.... it will really boost up their domestic services and will be a real blow to Precision AIr/Kenya Airways

yes, its true, ATC will lease an A330, but with the way things works in Tannzania, its a wait and see game,

It was a hijacking, but there were survivors, the hijacker's wanted to fly the plane to Australia, but there was not enough fuel and the plane ditched, only a hand full of people survived.

Firstly, I'd like to say that 50 surviving an accident is more than just a handful of people. Yes there were 125 (out of 175) fatalities on board, but fifty isn't a handfull.
The first officer survived and a few years later was flying Fokker 50s (could've been Twin Otter, one of the two) for ET...

A319  checkmark  Good choice for JNB, NBO etc, even BOM & DXB. Though they will be up against EK on DXB.

A330  no  LGW would be the most logical route, but even BA 'only' use a 763 to LHR - though load factors have been +90% when Ive been on it, but I dont know that TC can compete with BA.

Q400  checkmark  Good choice to compete with PW (as long as the gear stay intact...) but may be too big for some of the smaller strips.

There was an interesting article today in AirlineCity that listed the cities TC wants to hit next:

"The airline is looking to add routes to Nairobi, Kenya (NBO); Lubumbashi, DRC (FBM); Kigali, Rwanda (KGL); and Bujumbura, Burundi (BJM). Burundi and Rwanda are recent signatories to the East African Community, joining Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya."
